  1. At least the Riders didn't put too many men on the field!
  2. New box out before Xmas - sideman stuff, alternates, DVD. No coincidence?
  3. I think Motian should try to record with this ensemble I thought he had, a bunch, or did you mean with the sub sax players?
  4. Given the origins of the term 'jazz', calling it "Ken Burns' Jazz" seems, um, entirely appropriate!
  5. It's a Blue Note Groove Thing - I'd say defined by Higgins drumming (starting with HH's WM Man - before Sidewinder), except that Blue Mitchell's "High Heeled Sneakers" (w/A; Foster) and Donald Byrd's ____________ (w/Freddie Waits) fit into that bag, whatever you call it. Lou D w/ Egregious Muhamed, that's a whole different thing, groovey in it's own right.
  6. Zorn/Frisell/Lewis, Nude Like Lulu
  7. "Never was so much owed by so many to so few" My late father. who was born in 1931, was fascinated by the battle of Britain. I recently helped a student (in my job at the library) who'd got it confused as 'the English war with Britain'...took me longer to untangle that one than it should have. Didn't try as hard as I should have to explain it further. There is something to be said for the veiw that the Royal Navy should've been able to tear the Germans apart in the Channel if an invasion had been attempted, and for the view that most of the war ended up being fought in the East - nontheless a great victory for (mostly) good over totally evil...
  8. Adrian Rollini played BASS sax...
  9. I met a female alto clarinet player when I was working in a record store some time back, always wondered what happened to her...
  10. According to www.measuringworth.com, 5 pounds sterling in 1974 is now worth: 38.80 using the retail price index £39.80 using the GDP deflator £62.10 using the average earnings £75.20 using the per capita GDP and then there's the relative worth of pounds versus dollars... £82.60 using the share of GDP Does anyone else have probs from not having enough room to type/see what you're typing?
  11. OMG are you serious? Any adequate explication of the long history of an aesthetic preference for distorted/dirty/impure (in sound or otherwise) could fill volumes...so, in short, hell yes some of us like it like that! Or are you asking something much more specific about this particular frequency of B3 sound?
  12. Sorry to hear that he's gone, yes I have been reading his recent NYR stuff, with mixed feelings - have to go back and review to say anything more intelligent than that and I don't really have time...hopefully someone else will have something more substantive to add.
  13. Thank you. Left SK on the 29th, got home yesterday. Can anyone think of another pro sports (if that's what the CFL is) where a team represents the whoole province/state/whatever as the Riders do?
  14. Saw the Calgary v. SK game, the last half anyway in the Bar in Saskatoon while watching my brother's friend play 'dueling pianos'. The Riders stunk, but it was small potatoes next to my dad dying that week...
  15. Dude! Makin' me feel old... You never heard "Green Onions" or anything by Otis Redding or Sam & Dave?
  16. Some of the rec's above have sax (but are otherwise excellent), hmm maybe Jimmy Smith's Root Down (quite unlike his other work)?
  17. Do the MGs fit yer def of "instrumental rock"? Do the MGs fit yer def of "instrumental rock"?
  18. Absolutely, reminds me I need to get looking for the album of Hank W he did with Joe Pass. Thanks for posting this. The only Roy I got now is the one with Gatemouth Brown & arito.
  19. The army corps of engineers had a thing about it, rivers meandering that is.
  20. Good for you Allen, but Greil went into his fat Elvis stage a long time ago....
  21. So, how is the Braxton Tristano. Konitz had some rather harsh things to say about it, but he can just be that way.
  22. Pet Thounds
  23. Much prefer PT which sounds fine to me. The reconstructed Smile is mere ear candy, IMHO YMMV etc.
  24. Back to the original topic, it's kinda 'god in the ____' and equally wishful thinking....
  25. "Betcha, By Golly, Wow!" I love it too.
