  1. And he played at the same time? No, not literally at the same time, but on the same song.
  2. Well... not on the music's own terms. Inotherwords, he was very good at being Miles playing Monk...
  3. Lester Young, only once on record (I think) but he did sing on gigs, or so I've read.
  4. First of all, what are these Ravens things (I love The Ravens), and is this to be taken as literally true, or is it one of those relative/appears to be so/AFAIK things? "black vocal groups" of the '50s, in the '50s, maybe...the earliest live recordings that pop into my head are early '60s BUT I'm not an expert here. Would love to hear a good live recording of the '5' Royales or the Clovers or the Flamingos, to name just a few.
  5. I kinda like Back to Avalon, it's no Sonny's Dream but it's every bit as good as KD's Blue Spring, to make a couple of not-quite-totally pointless comparisons...
  6. It's been a long time since I comnpared them, but my memory is that I prefered the remakes on all but one where I strongly prefered the original. FWIW, YMMV, etc. Interesting that Bob bothered to do that, he's generally one take or less....
  7. I heard him play "Think of One" live with his brother Branford and Mel lewis at the late, lamented Mt. Hood Festival of Jazz and was quite taken with it. Lots of energy there. And then heard the album in question and wasn't nearly so impressed, still thought it was better than the Jelly Roll Morton thing he did 'bout the same time.
  8. This thread makes me wonder 'What exactly is surrealism anyways?' Since there certainly are some very different styles of cover art represented herein.
  9. Sometimes ol' Bob is full of it on purpose, this might be one of those times, or not... I ain't got the bandwidth to figure that out. Most likely he was just looking for an illustration of whatever halfbaked point he was trying to make and just grabbed something outta the air - it's not like he's ever been known for his research or editing skills.
  10. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em! There, someone had to say it and it makes as much sense as anything else you can say abouth this from the outside...
  11. I work at a library (as I may have mentioned) and I sagree with this X infinity!
  12. http://www.grammy.com/nominees?genre=21 in a word, yes

  14. Nominated?! They fucking WON!!!! Not that I have an ax to grind with Jethro Tull, but Heavy Fucking Metal?! Maybe that wasn't a mistake, maybe it was on purpose, as a joke (or not)...just something to consider.
  15. Gotta love a good Hockey joke! Slightly unrealistic, most Canadians would've just said 'No, we can't do that" if you could find anyone to help you at all!
  16. "financial terms were not disclosed" I'm thinking big $, no?
  17. It's the Fruits of their labours! Bad puns aside, this looks intriguing.
  18. I don't get how is Uber not subject to the same rules as any cab company?
  19. So, what does his analyst tell him this time?
  20. That's not love, it's neediness. On the other hand I quite like the project he did with Don Pullen, David Murray, Harold Vick, Scofiled, and Sharrock in various combinations, and they were even better on BET in yet another combo.
  21. Thankyou Lon. And all my best to you, too.
  22. Oh, if THAT'S What we're looking for... here ya' go! Not even West Coast, yet fits all those bills! https://mitrebox80.wordpress.com/2008/12/24/unknown-1950s-jazz-lp-on-rca/#comments Hey, I picked that up out of pure curiosity, never thought I'd see it mentioned here.
  23. Everytime I see this thread,Going Out of My head starts going through mine!
  24. All the neurological stuff my late father had, not technically inheritable but 'genetic predisposition' - same difference says I. Scares the hell outta me.
