I am definitely going to look out for some of the others as well. Looks like I've got a lot of listening ahead of me! and there's a different album that's the actual soundtrack from the show, rather than the 'soundtrack album' which was recorded separately.

I L-U-V love Ben playing "Danny Boy" (perfect tempo, among other virtues) BUT find the rest of that session quite routine. Ben with Tatum is exquisite, as is Sweets, and I particualarly like the one he did with Witherspoon for Reprise.

I second this. Lush Life is an exceptional recording. Lush Life/Sweet Slumber is indeed sweet, but so are all the midsized bands arranged by Duke Pearson for BN.

Just wondering, whether the Rhino set incorporates all tracks from subject lovely ACE compilation released in 1992...... No. a pity, as me believe this being a must have for any dedicated otis follower....... I agree, up to a point - the best on it, say "Cupid", is marvelous, but some of it really is bottom of the barrell (but what a deep barrell it was) Ì can see where you are comin`from...........still it`s a privilege to witness such quality "rejectiones".......what a great series of STAX + related Labels Reissues ACE managed to deliver at that time.......Ruby Johnson, William Bell, the "1000+ Volt of Stax" compilations and the deep Gospel of Chalice......hard to believe these Reissues were released more than 20+ years ago...... Dude, you're making me feel old! (actually, don't need any help there) I still think the MGs elgiac "Dock of the Bay" could be a hit if featured in a movie today.

recorded then (just before Alligator Boogaloo) but didn't get released til much later (198?). Which reminds me of one thing I really like about Lou, although not a jazz thing particularly, he seems to really dig tunes as tunes, not just as jamming vehicles. Along with his insistance that blues is central to jazz, he's also on record as not particularly digging 'modes' and modes based jazz ed. Not gospel in either case, but a good indication of where he's coming from. And there's still unissued stuff from the BN years! I'm good with Lou thru the Egregious Muhammad years, not so much after that.

Not bad, not bad at all, of the three Yardbirds covers on that box it's the only one that goes beyond more or less straight cover to extend the idea for a couple extra minutes worth.

I think states should let people put whatever stupidity they wish on their plates, except those that an imply a false official status, I'd rather know what idiots I'm dealing with.

Hope you love it, most of what immediately struck me as 'missing' were covers, which I love to hear Otis and the MGs do but I realize that's not to everyone's taste...

Hey TTK, you heard the version of "Lost Woman" on the Duane Allman Skydog box?

If I was boiling it down to 4 CDs, I'd have made a few different choices, but it's probably 90% right....but not perfect.

I think the ultimate version would include at least some mono and stereo since three songs from two singles (Respect. Old Man Trouble, and I've Been Loving you too Long) had to be recut for stereo and therefore are distinctly different takes done some time apart (the fourth side didn't make the album and therefore only exists in mon - I'm Depending On You, I think?). But you could get all the relevant mono and stereo on one CD, but I don't know if anyone has done that... My understanding is that the whole album, ie the new material and the three remakes, was done in a day - 30 some hours that Otis was in town between gigs during which some of the studio guys had a club gig of their own. Kinda makes you wonder why anyone spends much longer making much lesser music.

Not sure if I can afford this, but that would be the only reason for me to not buy it. Certainly of far greater interest to me than Little Feats and I like them OK.
