  1. Yeah, it's all kinds of wrong, but to me the worstest thing is that somewhere in there, buried under the bullshit, is a decent idea or two (borrowed no doubt) struggling to get out...
  2. The Move - Shazam Grant Green - Visions Objectively the're both fine, but flawed. Subjectively, I love 'em.
  3. Many of his finest, including his wonderful Bob Wills tribute, are actually the early '60s, but then much of 'the 50s' is actually the early '60s... I can see how you wouldn't forget that. By all accounts he always did exactly what he wanted. He did an album of standards very late in his long, long career - has anyone here heard it?
  4. Apparentlt not, but I do (listened to Our Man In Paris last night - that's the shit right there as far as I'm concerned) But still, the DB articles are fluff/hype of the highest/lowest order.
  5. They refer to it as 'England's Carol' I think (I think that's how it is titled in the Mosaic box). One that I always wished that the MJQ would have done is the medieval 'Coventry Carol'. I thought the Coventry Carol was what they did under various other titles...?
  6. Really?! That's weird to even think about, would have made it a very different band, not bad, just different! It shows how open minded he was considered. Hall declined, I can't remember the reasons nor where I read about it. Could have been somewhere on this board. He definitely was the most progressive of his generation, even without going "out". Yeah, his playing with Sonny goes right up to the edge of 'out'.
  7. I'm a long way from Fla, but it sounds like a nice gig, esp'ly if they play stuff from CC's Elvis trib (EP not EC, although it'd be cool if he did that too). Have fun!
  8. Current downbeat has an article by this title, guess the've never read Actually it's "Loves" but I like 'digs' better
  9. "Jim Hall was a great musician. A super friend. And among the highest order of human beings I have ever met." Sonny Rollins - from the official SR website
  10. Really?! That's weird to even think about, would have made it a very different band, not bad, just different!
  11. Didn't Rod the sod do something like this early on? His "Street Fightin' Man" and "Drinking Again" started out as other songs to which he just started singing those lyrics...IIRC.
  12. For a moment there I thought "Stadium Jazz" was a new Grammy category, not song title...
  13. Yes, but it's worth mentioning again... C'mon man, we're talking about overlooked people, are you folks joking around??? I think he's overlooked in some circles and overrated in others...no joke. Yeah, him!
  14. FWIW, I find Shepp > compelling in structured settings, $ For Trane & Trouble in Mind being particular favorites.
  15. Django, there's a guy who could play some solo guitar! But how much is there, I just have the one thing that's supposedly an excerpt of a longer performance - Django's Castle is it?
  16. Maybe he hasn't taken on the States yet. He's big enuff in his own pond, but I was thinking of a different pond, and it's not really his fiddle playing, it's the whole presentation, isn't it? Nonetheless. good point.
  17. I often enjoyed Jr Redman's work in the past , even if I'm not exactly 'a fan', even saw him with Metheney way back at the start of his career. But this just left me totally cold/nonplussed/bewildered. Had to listen to Clifford With Strings and Art P's Winter Moon to remind myself of how ballads are supposed to work...it's not like he's too young to get it now, so is it generational or what?
  18. They could let the audience do them, kinda like a singalong!
  19. I always thought their "White Bird" lyrically puerile, but the electric fiddle was nice! Given how stirring a sound that can make, it's surprising that no fiddler has really made it big in our times.
  20. A couple of the times I saw him live, he was wonderous did you see his alto, piano, drums trio or a more conventional lineup?
  21. "The players were high-fiving and hugging fans, who stood shoulder to shoulder at the rally in temperatures that dipped into the minus teens." Farhenheit or centigrade, that's cold, not as cold as it can get in SK, but cold enuff, esp'ly if there's any wind, which there usually is.
  22. Darius Jones, nice tone.
  23. I saw most of the 4th quarter, loved all the good feelings of the fans and players for each other - the Riders had 9 players from SK but, as usual for the CFL, many from far away in the States too. Now if they could just find some good Cree and/or Metis players, everything would harmonious on the prairies...
  24. Thank you. Virtual hugs to you!
