I think the 'Pay it Forward' thread is sort of like that: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=17254 Sort of - although it is a bit slow! I'm not explaining myself particularly well though. The main reason that I've not traded things in the past is that I think it would be too much of a long shot to list things that I'd like - I've always thought I'd be more likely to think "that sounds interesting" if I saw a list somewhere. I've not tried listing my duplicates before though so perhaps I ought to give it a go before pontificating (in a fairly incoherent way).

I still think that it would be a good idea to start a thread where people offered to trade duplicates - I think I'd be more inclined to take a flier trying something new when trading a duplicate. But agree that it should be in the Offering and Looking For thread.

Sounds like a fantastic idea Mike - although perhaps someone should start one in the Offering and Looking For forum. My duplicates tend to fall into two categories - where I've bought a box set after having sampled individual cds or when I have accidently bought two (which happens far more often than it should do for someone my age). The former doesn't really bother me, although the latter does, so I'll list my duplicates at the weekend! Denis

I tried to add funds to a site that was very, very similar in layout yesterday because they had Sold Rock by the Temptations, which is unavailable digitally but when I looked more closely it turns out that the source is the vinyl rather than the cd. So it may be that the album that you want is simply a rip from vinyl. At the prices that they were quoting you might think that it is still worth it (for stuff that it out of print at least) but I'd be amazed if any artists were seeing any royalties.

Available for under £20 here. Probably not worth it for those in the States once you add shipping but for those in the UK

My personal experience is that I am (almost) always charged duty, plus a fairly hefty fee, when I've used DHL while it is more like 50-50 when I use the normal post (although I have had to pay duty more often recently). Given that it is also much more convenient to go to the post office than to a DHL depot I always select the USPS option.

Sadly not - it is free within Japan. Hiroshi said that he wasn't able to get this from any of his suppliers so beware if you are sitting on the fence (although he did say he could purchase it from a store he advised getting it from HMV). It does sound as if it was a very limited release. It is (very) expensive (I think that they could have squeezed it onto three cds) but, as Clem says, it is sublime. Based on my recent experience with Royal Mail, I wouldn't hold your breath ! I made an order with them recently and it got shipped by FedEx, turned up about two days later and still no sign of any customs charge so there is at least some hope

I too have been more of a lurker than a contributer but I feel that I have gained immeasurably from logging on practically everyday. I'm delighted that it sounds as if it is going to survive but ultimately Jim needs to do what is best for him and his family - I confess that my initial reaction on reading his first post was that he should just jack it in. I have always been surprised at the level of vitriol that is displayed (and I don't even look at the Politics forum (being a dyed-in-the-wool socialist I figured a mainly American forum wouldn't be the best bet). I naively assumed that the things that we have in common as jazz fans would outweigh our differences. I would be happy ot make a regular subscription (although I don't believe that subscribers should gain additional benefits of any description) but can understand that the fees may make this ption prohibitively expensive. I will make a donation now and can only apologise that I haven't done so more in the past. Given the money I have "saved" from being informed of the various sales going on everywhere (especially 2001!!) it is the least that I can do (although my wife would probably argue that it is't a saving if I hadn't intended to buy the music in the first place!). Who's actually shipping it? Is it a US firm or a UK firm? (Lots of Amazon UK sellers are shipping from the US and this attracts customs dues for Britain.) MG Since I bought it from Amazon UK itself (not a seller like Caiman), and since they're offering free shipping within the UK, I would assume it's coming from the UK and not the US. Yep- if you are ordering direct from amazon.co.uk then there is no way you should have to pay customs.

I have been looking for this on cd for ages too John - almost to the point that I am a bit sceptical that it was ever released on cd! I love the Whitfield Temptations albums and although I am a huge David Ruffin fan the Dennis Edwards LPs are, in my opinion, vastly superior. I ended up picking up the vinyl for £0.99 on ebay and although I enjoyed it, I felt that it was probably the weakest of the Whitfield-era albums (although I need to listen to 1990 a bit more before I could be definite). For one thing I don't think that there is a stand-out track. Would still like to have it on cd too, so feel free to contact me once John has got his cd

I received my order today and there is only one cd that was in the CC batch (Horace Silver Trio) but the copy that I received was a cd. So at the very least they are stocking some of the reprints.

David I was in HMV yesterday and they had quite a few Blue Note cds that were CC'd in the past but don't seem to be now, e.g. Dance with Death and Black Fire. It doesn't apply to all of the cds though - the Monk/Coltrane at Carnegie Hall is still CC'd.

I still think it's better than Jazzwise, as it seems JR is less corporate and has more of an individual voice. Don't get me wrong - I also prefer it to Jazzwise and I subscribe to both. Unfortunately I just don't think that the future is too rosy for JR - they seem to be struggling to fill the magazine. The line spacing can be ridiculous and some of the articles are a bit ropey. The one about music/data storage took the biscuit.

Very sad news. 50 is far too young nowadays. It has felt to me, though, that Jazz Review has been on its last legs for a while. There is quite a lot of filler, which given that it is now bi-monthly doesn't bode well now that it's editor (and founder?) has passed.

I don't think that you should hold your breath. They seem to have a lot of cds that are OOP that normally ship in two to four weeks. Worth a try though.

For those sitting on the fence the Royal Festival Hall are offering a discount of 25% if you book tickets for both concerts in the one transaction. Presumably they aren't selling hugely well at the minute.
