  1. Both Fantasy twofers are highly recommended for sure, ubu! I'd also want to praise his earlier work, available on Classics CDs, both as a big band leader and as a fine stride pianist. And, as Hans has pointed out, those Galaxy discs were not recorded at the Roseland Ballroom and the Cotton Club. Same for many other Galaxy bootlegs. BTW, nice post on Claude Hopkins on your Keep Swingin' blog!!!
  2. Tonight: Canal Street Jazz Band at the Café Populart (Madrid). Trombonist Jim Kashishian rules!

  6. Of course. Brain fart on my part. Hibbler didn't join until after the recording ban, I think. Nice to know the Anderson stuff will be there. Did Duke have a male vocalist in the 30s? I can't remember. I'm pretty sure that Ray Nance and Herb Jeffries didn't join until around 1940. greg mo Yes, Ray Nance replaced Cootie Williams in early November 1940 and Al Hibbler joined in mid-1943. Amazingly good news re: the 30's big band sides!
  7. Good news for David (& others) Storyville just reported that the Treasury Shows #14 CD is to be released this year and the Cotton Club broadcasts in 2010.

  19. A true master (and very nice guy). One of the best examples of how a musician can be really modern and original (and not only for the metatonal thing), being respectful and devoted to the tradition (Bix, Armstrong).
  20. My sincerest condolences to Roland Garros for having such stupid and dumb-ass spectators. Their behaviour in the game that Nadal lost went beyond negative fanaticism. A fair and polite great champion like Rafa doesn't deserve it. End of rant. A
