Hey, here in DC, you consume or drink in the subway system and they'll fine you. Mind you, I have never seen it happen in all my years here. But you get the looks from people if you do that. What they should be doing is busting all the people who get dressed and put on make up in the trains (both acts I have seen). My boss was fined for drinking soda on the train once.

I saw this thread right before going to lunch. I went to my local music store and bought the set, with a coupon I already had. My wallet is a walking zombie from having been bled dry so many damn times! I'm leaving this forum!!!!!!!! The first cd is wonderful, BTW.

There are a few Horace Silver gems from recent years. Jazz Has a Sense of Humor, issued on Verve, is an excellent album, done in the 90's.

That seems right. And before that was the black label with orange circle with impulse and abc on it -- late 60's to early 70's. The original was orange label with black circle.

What kind of fine tuning? What kind of player? I recently saw this audiophile geek tweek -- a $300 "enhancement" for your turntable -- a mat to go on top of your platter, that is antistatic, disperses vibrations, etc. etc, and has the ability with supplied add ons to adjust the height of the platter to compensate for varying thicknesses of vinyl. I'm sure it works. I'm not getting it, though.

I just picked up a King Tubby 2 cd set from Trojan a couple of days ago. Man, this smokes! A compilation of the 70's years, and all the tracks are great!

Once they're warped, they are done for.

The two Ska boxes, the two Dub boxes and the Nyabinghi set are all great. Highly recommended.

I'm getting out of DC during the sweltering month of August, to see some friends in Rochester Minnesota. I'm making this a big loop of a drive, going north to Minnesota and hitting the middle part of the US coming back. I'll see some folks in Pittsburgh, then hit various cities along the way. Any recommendations as to places to see, music stores to hit, Goodwills to browse through?

Damn! I'll be doing a road trip in August -- 14 through the end of the month. From DC to Minnesota and parts between. I wish I could catch you guys......

French DMM pressings are poop. Utter crap. Avoid at all costs. You are better off searching for Liberty pressings or 70's blue and black label pressings.

More like 50 cents - $2 range, from what I have been seeing. I think the bloom exists, but again, there isn't that depth -- man, those old lps were recorded with a sence of placement and space that can't seem to be equalled.

Only five, and only the ones on sale. Don't get me wrong, they are not bad, but considering that they are working from the same source material, it is interesting the different results. Sure, the material has aged a lot, which can't be helped. I think I am lucky in the sense that DC is a huge vinyl area, if you know where to look. Especially classical. Jazz, forget it -- the kids in the used record stores get them all. I know, I used to be one of them!

I got the Goldring Turntable today and am listening to it right now. What a difference! The sound is much richer and dynamic. I was a little concerned when I picked it up -- not too heavy, but looking at it, they concentrated on all the parts that matter -- the motor, the arm, and included their own Elektra cartridge as well. It took about 5 minutes to put it together, calibrate the arm, and plug it in. There is no ground wire, something new to me, which probably tells you I've been using some old turntables. Plexi cover, platter and felt mat (which I replaced with an antistatic one), and three feet (another new one to me). It is one solid machine. My only complaint is that why can't they make rca plugs to the table so you can attach a better interconnect to it. A minor complaint, though. This is sweet!
