  1. Don't jump on me. How much did DMG pay for their copies? We don't know.
  2. I came across this cd while shopping this morning (in the midst of the hurricane, not too bright!). It's on Drive Archive, came out in 1995. Personnel includes: Chuck Mangione, Frank Mitchell, Keith Jarrett, and Reggie Workman. Recorded between January 1-9, 1966. Six tracks, all fairly long, including Buttercorn Lady, Recuerdo, The Theme, Between Races, My Romance, Secret Love. The sound quality is a solid B -- slightly muffled, but you can hear everyone quite well. Listening to this in the car, I was stuck by the very strong playing and tightness amongst the players. It wasn't commercial like the Limelight material, nor unfocused as the 60's were coming to an end. Mangione's playing in the 70's is what it is, but damn, he was a burning hard bop trumpet player! and Frank Mitchell was equally firey on this cd. They really stretch out on the tunes, almost at times sounding avant like the Impulse "New Wave" of that time. I'm curious if there were other recorded efforts by this lineupt.
  3. In all fairness, DMG has a hell of a monthly rent to cough up. Buying direct from the source will always be cheaper.
  4. Still waiting for it to show up on DG............. I guess that's the only way we can order it here in the US?
  5. I'm a Skins fan, and that was embarrassing! This is a result of so much tinkering over so many years. Good or bad, they have to stick with what they have through the year.
  6. Joe Chambers always seems to fall in the cracks where recommended albums are concerned. You can always expect strong compositions and playing. This is a nice surprise -- who knew that this existed? Also, check out his "Mirrors" cd on Blue Note. A neglected and excellent cd!
  7. Tito Rodriguez lived across the street from my grandmother, back in the 50's. She said he kept running out of the house to shoo the neighborhood kids away from his fancy convertible, parked on the street. I love Tito Rodriguez. I think comparing him to Tito Puente is comparing apples to oranges. They may have played similar music (esp Mambos), but I find Puente more jazz oriented, and Rodriguez became one heck of a balladeer. If they are still available, I would try to find volumes 1 - 3 of his best of RCA recordings, or the Live in Puerto Rico cd.
  8. Up, some new items added August 12.
  9. Which tells me that either A) He don't know how to listen/relate to a descarga date such as this one (the "listening" is at best only partially done with the ears and "mind", which I guess destroys the "purity" of the listening. Whatever...) B) For whatever reason, he ignored Clare Fischer's top-of-his-game Rhodes contributions here and/or C) Him & me just got very different opinions about this one. Oh well Pay no attention to the man behind the reputation. If you like "this type thing" (i.e. - descargas, in this case with a bit of "cultural fusion" (Cat Anderson on a descarga date? Oh HELL yeah! Alongside the LEGANDARY El Negro!) and modernity (salsa in 5!) thrown in, hey - this puppy's a stone groove. Fuck this "pure listening experience" bullshit and take it for what it is - a pure party experience. And not a cheap party neither, no sir. We're talking one of those good parties that make you glad to be alive. This is the only Louie Bellson album I've ever gotten happy about. Ever. Well worth the search! I have this on vinyl and it does indeed kick ass! Yannow clearly wasn't paying attention to this one. Latin fans, jazz fans, music lovers should pick this up.
  10. Happy Birthday Lon!
  11. This is spam that I like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12. Up, new items added.
  13. Up, an auction listing.
  14. We all have them already.
  15. You mentioned the one thing that is even more annoying than the scanty covers, namely the sound. Most of the Pablos have very poor sound - all this great performers would have deserved better recording / sound engineering. There are a lot of 50's records with way higher audio quality than a great part of the Pablo albums (e.g. Contemporary, Riverside, Prestige). Which ones? I routinely come across thick vinyl, excellent sounding Pablo lps (Gillespie, Milt Jackson, etc.)
  16. The shirtless Herbie Mann collection.
  17. Also, it means how much the US dollar has dropped in value (if the winning bidder is from overseas).
  18. It's all about the music, not the format.
  19. I'm auctioning off some jazz lps on ebay. Here's the link: Stefan's ebay Items
  20. Record and Tape Exchange on Main Street (Route 236), off of Route 50. Here's a web link:RTXchange
  21. Their lease is up. As with anything in NY, that means a new lease will be much higher. The owner is looking at other locations in case he can't come to terms to a new lease.
  22. Thanks guys! I was in New York this past weekend, having a blast. Splurged at Downtown Music Gallery, which is still on the Bowery, but maybe not much longer....
