  1. Number 9 is driving me crazy. It can't be Sonny Rollins, can it?!
  2. Well, this project has devolved, so here -
  3. Meaning, they are not usually associated with that instrument. I'll start here -
  4. It's Castine, Maine. A tiny coastal town of 1400 people, which houses Maine Maritime Academy, effectively doubling the population. I think that part of Maine, Penobscot bay, is as beautiful a place as the nature had ever created.
  5. I saw Rivers together with Jason Moran and Reggie Workman at the Iridium in April of 2002. Another board member was there with me. I believe it was a four night engagement. I may have some 35mm negatives from that night, that I never got around to print. I have to look.
  6. The photos come in clear protectors. Here's the photo of Ornette I really like, and its verso.
  7. I don't know, I bid on the phone. I saw photos of some of the LPs, and there were some BN titles, which obviously sparked my interest [i.e. "Here's that Holy Grail I deserve to have!"]. I'm sure I wasn't the only one, because someone else was there and wanted them, which proved to be lucrative for the auction house and the consigner. The BNs turned out to be Liberty and UA era, aside from a couple of pre-1966 originals [I'll tell you which ones, once I go through them]. Yet there still was some seminal music there. Here's a sampling.
  8. 1. I was going to say it's Eddie Jefferson, but it's not him. I should know his music better. The beginning of the track had a Duke Ellington feel. 2. I like it. Junior Mance? 3. More dirty blues. Swing combo blasting away. 4. I should know this. 5. 1970s. Bob Brookmeyer? 6. So similar to the previous track! Sonny Criss? 7. Drawing a blank. 8. Drawing a blank. 9. Drawing a blank. The tenor's identity is at the tip of my tongue. 10. Well, you needn't. Can't say I like this interpretation. 11. A nice blues by the masters. 12. Is this an American band? Feels kind of "tribute-like". 13. The Man I Love. Man, it's my own shortcoming, but I am so bad on the tenor players who came up in the late 1930s-1940s. I was going to say Don Byas, then I even heard some Zoot Sims there, so I give up. Overall, this is the most blues-heavy BFT.
  9. It's time to change the nickname. UMG lawyers may already be drawing the Cease and Desist letter. I received my order yesterday afternoon. The dark room quality is top notch! On the backs are stickers with dates, and other interesting tidbits. Some date back to 1994, and have Charlie Lourie c/o Mosaic stickers. How long has Mosaic been selling these?!
  10. Only luck to you! We jazz people are not that easy to kneecap!
  11. I’ll post some group shots as I clean them. Price was a fair bit more than you wrote, but not in the “damn high” range. A couple of the titles are the dreaded ‘remastered for stereo’ , indicating that the owner started buying in the very late 1960s-early 1970s. These haven’t been played in decades: the jackets are really dusty, no outer poly sleeves. Probably sat in a dry cellar or basement for a long time, before being auctioned off. Luckily, I don’t spy any mold. Condition of the sides I played is quite nice. At one time the owner put some of the records in inner poly sleeves, the kind that’s not being made any more.
  12. Smart marketing! Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on Monday. Many people will have the day off, and will go shopping. I hope someone in their teens will walk in there, buy the album, and put it on for the first time. What a thrill!
  13. This was a first for me. I was a winning bidder on a nice collection of about 150 titles, focused on the 1960s-1970s jazz, sold as one lot in a local auction house. I previously bought a high-end mid-1980s Pioneer Elite stereo system from this auction, in amazing condition, including a superb PL-90 turntable with a very good Signet cartridge . The auctioneer is an honest man, with good reputation in the area, and gets interesting things on a regular basis, mostly from surrounding estates, probate, and house cleaners. I wish I could meet the previous owner, if he is still living. He put together an interesting, forward-looking record collection, from which I keep drawing albums I've never heard, or heard of before. There were even three or four original Blue Note, and a few Actuel, Black Jazz Records titles, Just by flipping through, the collection titles start ca.1963, and end in about 1980.
  14. Last month I saw about thirty LPs for sale in a gadget store in Baltimore BWI Airport, pushed out to the front of the store, for pre-Christmas transit flyers. Popular old rock and modern pop titles - the Stones, Adele, etc. Don't remember the prices, but they were in the $25+ range. I think the new Adele "30" album was the world bestseller on vinyl last year. It sold about 235000 copies worldwide. Second place went to Taylor Swift, with slightly fewer. It's pretty amazing, if you think of it.
  15. This is a discovery for me. Every day brings new joys! Bobby Jones - THE ARRIVAL OF BOBBY JONES
  16. Well, gentlemen, this page in our jazz journey has been turned. https://www.mosaicrecordsimages.com/
  17. I use Flickr. It’s free, and very easy to work with.
  18. What fishing box? Yes, the Blue Notes are crazy now, even the 1970s-1980s represses. Damn kids. I remember buying the LT series not long ago at all, for $10 and even less. Freddie Hubbard - STRAIGHT LIFE, wafer-thin LP, great sound.
  19. My daughter just sent me a photo she took from the window of her dorm room.
  20. Do share the photos of your framing solution, mate!
  21. My answer for the limited display space is rotation. Store the artwork in a closet, and use the available wall on the mood basis. Just received an email from Mosaic - my order is shipped. The prints will need to be matted and framed. Let's share ideas and solutions on the frame choices and mattes! Obviously, archival quality mattes, and art glass. Won't be cheap!
  22. One got low, the other medium. I wonder what a low security prison is like down in Florida. And how it differs from the medium security prison. Do the gangs of accountants and slum landlords fight for the territory with the gangs of preachers and rabbis? Is there a Waffle House on premises?
  23. I don't know the music, but I like the cover. Well done by the designer. It has a 1970s, independant jazz label quality.
  24. In addition to the prison sentences, Mayfield and Markham are required to pay restitution of $1.1 million toward NOPLF at a rate of $500 monthly installments that began this month. A $200,000 payment has already been made by NOJO. At the rate of installments, it would take nearly 92 years to recoup the stolen funds. And even more disturbing news - I've yet to visit a Waffle House...
