  1. Oh no....for me he was the most naturally-gifted footballer of our time, maybe of all time. Watching him on the pitch was like listening to Coltrane flying through the Giant Steps. Effortless, inventive, full of humor...brilliant. The only other one who was in the same orbit - Ronaldinho.
  2. Played this on youtube. Crazy shit...reminded me of my much younger nights at the Tonic, the Knit, DMG, the first three or four Vision Festivals and other sundry downtown venues of repute. I'm not buying this, guys, but enjoy, if this is your bag!
  3. https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B086HWSV8P/ref=atv_hm_hom_1_c_iEgOEZ_2_1 Really enjoyed this take on Hercule Poirot by John Malcovich. The real twist comes all the way at the end of the last part.
  4. Her home aide has not been wearing masks?! Please, make them do it. Can you request another home aide for your mom for the next 2 weeks? My mother had Covid, most probably picked it up from one of her home aides in the Spring of this year, since they've been the only people to visit her in the past 8 months. Luckily she had zero symptoms. She tested positive for antibodies, that's how we found out.. Also, here is a peer reviewed publication stating the Covid-19 antibodies were present in samples gathered in Northern Italy as early as September of 2019. Which, to me, brings this onto yet another step of mendacity surrounding this pandemic. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0300891620974755
  5. I'm honestly shocked we haven't been flooded here with dozens of contemporary Country album covers. They really only play on these four themes - lost my truck, lost my gun, lost my my girl, lost my dog.
  6. Prepare for more.
  7. Milt Jackson, J.J.Johnson, Ray Brown - Jackson, Johnson, Brown & Company, on Pablo Records, 1983.
  8. Yes, it's been a while since he's checked in. Hoping he's well, and is just taking a sabbatical.
  9. The dude didn't even take his cigar out....
  10. After I received the message from Steve, or whoever hacked his account, I logged into my panel there, read the message and decided to change the password, just to be on the safe side. Now my password doesn’t work, I can’t log back in. Weird stuff. I’ll try again later.
  11. Speaking of the Steve Hoffman Forum, I received a message from the forum, telling me that it was hacked and to get a better password. Now I can't log into my account there. Tried contacting the admin, but keep getting the message A server error occurred. Please try again later. Anyone having issues there? Forum seems to be working, just not for me.
  12. Some cds are unlistenable..others are unreadable. -Confucius
  13. I'm on the opposing end - watched the film first, and just bought the book.
  14. mhatta, thank you very much for the Flea interview link! You are right, Flea appears to be a genuine jazz man. Were you familiar with Joe Albany before this movie? No. I knew his name, but I didn’t know much about him. When I got together with Amy, I went and got a recording of his. I grew up with those same types of guys. My house was full of these L.A. jazz guys at the time, always coming in and out. My stepdad was the one who hung out with them. It was like a weird little cult, a subset of a culture. It was all these guys who grew up in the Forties and the Fifties loving Bird, Fats Navarro, Mingus, Lester Young – jazz was the coolest thing on earth and they dedicated their lives to this incredibly sophisticated, deep art form. Come the Seventies, no one gave a fuck and these guys they just really couldn’t catch a break. They had shitty jobs. My stepdad would fix cars in a backyard. He was a great bass player, man, playing hotel lobbies, playing bullshit. He was a fucking serious bebop player.
  15. Joe Albany - Portrait of an Artist $3.98 Amazon Prime https://www.amazon.com/Portrait-Artist-Joe-Albany/dp/B001G2S47W/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=joe+albany&qid=1605971145&sprefix=joe+albany&sr=8-5
  16. Thank you, I'll keep my eye out for a copy. Just listened to the entire album on youtube, and wouldn't mind buying a cd, if one becomes available. The original Deram LPs go for $300 or thereabout. I enjoy good modal jazz, and this is a good one.
  17. Joe Albany - Proto-Bopper, on Revelation, 1972. A decent quality recording, I especially enjoyed the solo part of the program. Interestingly, some of the tunes credited as 'standard', even though the composers are well-known.
  18. A perfect way to celebrate my birthday!!!
  19. She should've been nominated also, and they both should've won... Flea, the bass player from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, did very well playing a Chet Baker-influenced trumpeter. I didn't recognize him at first. He was also one of the executive producers, along with Anthony Keidis, the singer from that band. What does the executive producer do?
  20. I just watched the LOW DOWN, feature film based on A.J. Albany's biographical book, and co-scripted by her. I'm still under the influence [no sad pun intended] of the movie, but at this instant I declare it the best jazz movie and movie on drug addiction that I've seen. Everything works: the acting, the direction, the sound; the cinematography is just right. It's almost 2 hours long, but it doesn't drag on. Glenn Close is a surprise winner. She should've been nominated for the best supporting actress. Film is available for free on Amazon Prime. I have not heard of this movie before reading Joe Albany's Wikipedia article.
