Virus shortages and your impressions.
Dmitry replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Garlic is BACK! It's everywhere. In addition to the Chinese and American homegrown, now I see garlic from Argentina, Chile and Spain. What's missing is Dry Yeast and All-purpose baking four. Both do pop up from time to time, but for the most part those two items are gon. I went as far as to order both from Amazon - Saf-Instant Yeast, 1 Pound Pouch $20 Ceresota Unbleached Forever All Purpose Flour 25 lb bag $54 One pound bag of yeast would last me 20 years, and the 25 lbs of flour...I must've been stoned and/or desperate when I placed the order, so I canceled it. -
This, my friends, blows.... https://mailchi.mp/newportfestivals/whats-new-for-2018-newport-folk-516185?e=a14bd90443 Dear Newport Jazz Family – This is the letter I was praying I wouldn’t have to write, feeling we need the healing powers of live music more now than ever. It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the cancellation of the 2020 Newport Jazz Festival. As devastating as it is to write those words, it’s balanced with a renewed sense of, well, HOPE. It’s Rhode Island’s motto for good reason and it’s also the feeling you, our festival family, constantly exudes when we come together in good times and perhaps more importantly, in difficult times as well. This community is truly unlike any other in music, and I believe we can emerge from this adversity stronger and more connected than ever before. However, while your safety was at the core of the present decision, your support will be at the core of our future viability. Our ability to produce this festival in 2021 - and continue making a lasting difference in the lives of artists, students and Jazz lovers like yourselves - is in your hands. Quite simply, we need your help. Due to the financial and institutional uncertainties we find ourselves in, we believe the most trusting and direct course of action is to let the ticket holders decide where their ticket dollars should go. We have sent all ticket holders an email mapping out three options: 1) donate all or a portion of your ticket that will go directly towards ensuring our festival for 2021 while continuing our support for artists and educators; 2) apply your refund towards a 2021 Revival Membership - a new and one-time offer we’ve created specifically to ensure our future and provide these members with 3-day tickets to the 2021 festival at Fort Adams; and 3) receive a 100% full refund if desired. For those of you who didn’t have tickets for this year, PLEASE consider making a tax-deductible donation (newportfestivals.org/donate). Help us continue these festivals, support year-round music education initiatives, and provide grants to artists in need. I want to personally thank our founder George Wein, our staff, our Board of Directors, Christian McBride, the City of Newport and the DEM for their continued efforts. And, offer a personal note of gratitude to Rhode Island Governor, Gina Raimondo for her leadership and counsel in prioritizing our well being in making the decision to cancel the festival. Although we won’t be able to gather at the Fort this summer, rest assured we have invited ALL the announced artists to join us next year. In the meantime, we promise we will all commune one way or another on our festival weekend. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks. Until then, stay safe. And in the words of George Wein, "don't miss the beat." Jay Sweet, Executive Director, Newport Festivals Foundation

So I’m reading this thread, thinking it just happened...guy wearing a face mask breaks into a house....seems normal. What happened to your cop-neighbor who let a dimwit drunk steal two of his guns?

I've had this double-sided piece for 15 years, maybe longer. Sugar Chile Robinson was my main attraction, when I bought it, but it's got plenty for our British friends to sink their teeth in. I have no idea who the other performers are. Two sides of yesteryear. Dig the Peep Show! 7.5" x 10", and in great shape, with uniform paper toning. Would look great archival-glass-framed. How about $50 post paid?

Record label claims Amazon is selling counterfeit vinyl
Dmitry replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
You call a counterfeit record dub of an officially-released album, even in a different format, a bootleg? I've been applying this to only unauthorized concert recordings. -
Tonight, I wasn't drinking alone.
-
what are you drinking right now?

I thought Barolo wines were supposed to be uniformly good, heavy and rich. This was light, almost no fruit to taste, and the color wasn't amazing. I was disappointed.. $35. Is it possible it's counterfeit? Viu Manent Cabernet Sauvignon, at 1/5 the cost, was much better. Life is still full of surprises. -
I took these on October 19, 2018 at The Side Door, in Connecticut [one of the best jazz clubs in the world, imho]. He was frail, forgetful, cantankerous, and wonderful that night in Old Lyme. Good bye, Lee!

Yes, we are pretty much the same here. Only emergencies, and I'm limited to what I can do without another set of hands to help me. I would wager that on average 70% of my patients are women. Most of the emergencies so far have been men. Women just take better care of themselves. Apologies for the thread derailment, which is almost a custom for us for here.

Lucky you, Chris. our gov shut the barber shops, along with the rest of the "close contact" businesses 3 weeks ago. The temples and the back of the head shouldn't be a problem for a trimmer. Otoh, I'm grooming my nose hair to prevent the inhalation of the virus. Some more photos from yesterday's trip to the market. THE HUNTING DAD BEAUTY STARTS IN THE SHOWER 2/$6 DUE TO TIGHT SUPPLY, LIMIT 2 PER CUSTOMER LIMITED EDITION BONES & RAWHIDE, the good old days. The most stocked isle in the store. He looked lonely, so I took him home to my daughter. -
At first when I read the opening salvo, I was like, "I NEED these!!", and then I looked around in my "personal space" at all the other things, books, magazines, records, that I've been meaning to read, listen to, browse, reflect upon over the years. I owe it to myself NOT to buy any more. Thank you for your generosity, LWayne, and to whoever will get these: enjoy!!!

Just finished watching the SUNSET BOULEVARD. I am ashamed to admit, this is the first time I've seen the film, and it is remarkable, easily one of the top films I've ever watched. Everything about it is just about perfect; the only thing missing was even a little bit of jazz music.. Leading women were so much more interesting then than today...

As much as I welcome community spirit and keeping the landmark store going [they've almost reached half a million dollars in two days], I may not be understanding something about this situation. The CEO, Elaine Katzenberger, has probably applied for the PPP loan/grant with the company's bank, as well as the SBA Grant. The former should cover 2.5 months of her and her employees salaries, payroll taxes and benefits. I, as a small business owner, have applied for those programs a couple of days ago, and while I have no results yet, I'm keeping positive. Assuming that she will get approved for the above-mentioned programs, how will this almost $500,000 gift be factored into their books? It also appears that they are taking on-line orders, just not shipping books at this time, so the business is continuing to generate revenue to a degree. Just some questions I have regarding this...

I had to go back to work this morning, so we hit the supermarket all the way on other side of our vast state, which is a 35 minute drive. Garlic is plentiful there, both the USA product [at least the sticker said so], and Chinese. The Chinese one was 5 bulbs for $2.29, packaged in tidy plastic netted socks, the Americano was $1 per bulb. There was also an organic variant, three small bulbs per box, but it didn't look great, so we took a few bulbs of the alleged US garlic. There was also the pickled, minced variety in jars below, but that was of no interest, and will be the last resort, if the need arises.. So it appears there are purveyors that have ran out [like the two my wife hit yesterday, and was told they haven't seen a clove in a week], while others, some distance away, are stocked up. I took a cruise around the market, and some items, like frozen vegetables, cleaning products, paper goods, fish, some meats, are all but gone. The kid at the fish counter said they are going to only be selling the pre-packaged portions on a smaller scale. The fish section is gone, for now. Looks like pork butts have been cleaned up. Could be Easter. Could be the 89c/lb. deal. There's PLENTY of other meat, and meat-containing products on the shelves. My mother in law, who literally missed the last plane to Europe, and is stuck with us for who knows how long, which is pretty nice, planted some sprouted cloves of garlic that she found in the pantry. Apparently this stuff grows anywhere. We shall see. -
Since I've been self-unemployed, I started to enjoy cooking again. Aside from the regular shortages of paper goods, yesterday I discovered that America has run out of garlic...yes, Allium Sativum is in short supply, meaning we couldn't buy it at two supermarkets. My Salmoriglio was ruined. Unbeknownst to me, most of the garlic is supplied to the world by the Chinese conglomerates using prisoner labor, and it's not what you might call an OSHA-compliant process. Apparently the garlic trade wars have been raging for decades, and we had no knowledge. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garlic_production_in_China#cite_note-FT2018-11 "Prison labour is common in China, where the law states that prisoners able to work must do so — a system known as “reform through labour”. China is home to around 2.3m prisoners and pre-trial detainees, according to the Institute for Criminal Policy Research, giving it the world’s second-largest prison population after the US The hours are long, and "Former prisoners say the pungent acids in the garlic can melt detainees’ fingernails, exposing stinging flesh. Those who can no longer use their hands bite off the garlic skins with their teeth." Once I finally get a hold of a bulb, I'll start planting my own. Will post some more photos that I've been snapping.

I was a big fan of the show. Back when comedy was funny, self-deprecating and not PC. Now, back to our scheduled program - Our two thieves. The tubby was a feral kitten, and still won't let anyone touch him, unless caught off guard sleeping.

That's how he views himself, probably...a mighty warrior, and the subject of Picasso's.
