  1. I've seen many cases here of people clapping their own achievement ! Your quiz show answer is correct, someone says your cooking is good, give yourself a big hand. The habit is especially prevalent among young girls .
  2. Mad Men season six final episode. Great stuff, a lot of surprises but no spoilers.
  3. The great Bobby Bland has died. I suppose it's to be expected given his age but it doesn't diminish the loss. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/feedarticle/10852000
  4. Dates - Channel 4 Episodes 1-5 Not at all as it might appear but well written and interesting. I thought it was very good. I'm with Jazzbo on Hannibal, I didn't like it at all.
  5. All the best , Bruce.
  6. Charulata is a great film. It's already available in a good transfer on Artificial Eye.
  7. He will be missed very much, a big loss of a great actor. In The Sopranos he had a screen charisma to match Cagney
  8. Yes, right. Notice how much stuff this article is trying to sell you? From this side ot the Atlantic, Americans are viewed as being a bit too fetishistic about cleanliness. Mind you, I've got to say that it's a pleasure to have a piss or a crap in public loos in America, but nowhere else I've been in the world. MG You should come to Tokyo MG. Best toilets anywhere with all the bells and whistles! That's for sure. Nowhere I've ever been has toilets that can compare with Tokyo.
  9. Boss was an outstanding serious drama and tv at it's best. Two seasons seemed a reasonable length given the medical facts. Quality is more important than spinning a story out for corporate profit. If anything it 's even better on second viewing.
  10. The Returned - Channel 4 Gripping first episode, beautifully done.
  11. Call me a Luddite but I'll stick with my regular mobile phone. The mass use of smart phones and the attendant zombie/trance state have confirmed me as a non believer.
  12. Thought it was a Mick Jagger reference from Get Y'r Ya Yas Out. The bum freezer/waistband round thighs look seems to have died out in Tokyo at least.
  13. I stopped about 24 years ago. My dad was a very heavy unfiltered smoker. He died at 49.
  14. Personal cheques don't exist here. Credit cards aren't accepted in 95% of local shops and restaurants. Cash rules the roost totally.
  15. Pioneer PDR D7 cd recorder bought in1998 so it doesn't really qualify as old. I love it's tank like build and audio quality as a cd player.
  16. Scott & Bailey Season 3 finale Nicola Walker never fails to impress. The scenes with Amelia Bullmore in the car were quite something.
  17. I was impressed too, certainly a must read imo. Currently rereading this great biography in fits and starts. The background information to how the films were conceived and made is very interesting. The Storm Of War was also engrossing, as was Max Hasting's All Hell Let Loose
  18. The accents are no problem but I don't like the show at all .
  19. Bleak House BBC Started rewatching this impressive classic. I've seen almost every BBC Dickens production and consider this one of the very best.
  20. Family Tree HBO Really got into the first episode, the characters , dry humour and rich eccentricity held my attention for the 25 minute running time.
  21. Elementary The idea seemed quite heretical and I didn't bother watching this for ages. I've started working my way through the first season and am pleased at how entertaining it is.
  22. In Treatment season three, the Sunil episodes. Irrfan Khan is indeed an impressive actor.
  23. Here episode 5 didn't run til last night. I gave up on this show after 4. It's just an excuse to show ever more ways to kill people. I don't care about the detectives or the killers. Even Gina Torres (Mrs. Fisbourne, and I really love Gina) couldn't save it for me. Horrible , grim show and a big waste of talent.
  24. Top Of The Lake - Jane Campion Brilliant and very much recommended. More proof that well handled tv can surpass a lot of the dross palmed off as film these days.
