  1. Happy birthday, from Joel and the cats.
  2. Just my take... It's fine as long as you're still visible to much or most of the audience, i.e. in a jazz bar where people can still see where you've gone, and thus don't have to wonder where you've gone to (or how far you've gone -- and are you coming back?? -- is everything OK??). But in a concert situation, i.e. with a stage and wings -- I think it is a bit distracting to the audience to have one of the participants disappear and then reappear, particularly over and over again. Some people can't help but wonder what's going on with the absent party, and can't help but wonder (even if only semi-consciously) when the missing person will return again. Jazz bar, OK. Stage with wings, not OK. But that's just me. Or if you wanted to disappear into the wings, keep it to once or twice at most. Anything more than that would be annoying, at least for me.
  3. Only 20 years left to wait.
  4. I've had this disc for about a year (the Conn of "African High Life"), and I swear the almost 40-minute long, previously unreleased BONUS session gets better and better, and BETTER every time I hear it. This is some of THE most soulful Donald Byrd I've ever heard. He's not flashy (even sometimes decidedly UNflashy), perhaps sounding a little like he'd heard some Don Cherry. Whatever it is, I love it dearly. :excited: Anybody else have this disc?? The original session is interesting, and enjoyable -- but that second session is one of THE heaviest things in the entire BN catalog (in my book). Sangrey, you have this date?? If not, you really NEED it, trust me.
  5. While I'll never claim to be "excited" by Black Dahlia, I do think it's a pretty decent album -- particularly as far as "movie soundtrack"-type music goes. Didn't love it the first time I heard it, but it's grown on me a bit over the years.
  6. I can see where you're comin' from on that, Jim, and probably even agree to a point. But a little forced (or not), is just one supremely BAAAD performance in my book.
  7. This date refuses to leave my car stereo, and continues to kick ass mightily.
  8. Here's one that's a little bigger, best I could do... Edit: Still not as big as Smell The Glove (above), drat!!
  9. Pretty sure it is entirely different. No guitar on the Everest LP, and Woody is almost definitely on there (don't have mine handy to check, but I'm almost positive he's on there).
  10. What label is it?? (if I might ask) -- but only if it is a real "silver" disc. No interest in CDR's here. I own the original LP (which I know, appears to be just as 'legit' (not) as the CD you have), so it's really a question of wanting the material from my preferred media source (CD). I do own the box set, but that version of "Power To The People" from the Everest LP is really fantastic, and unique - since no other live version of the tune was ever released (legit).
  11. Any other "less than well known" pics of Hank anyone got to share (At least "less than well known" around these parts.)
  12. I'm with you. It's not like junk snail-mail that actually (physically) clutters things up.
  13. And/or Finland I think. Basically they set the fine as a percentage of gross income. Say 0.1% of one's monthly income, for instance, which would be quite different for someone very rich, vs. someone working for double-minimum wage (or less). The notion is that this is "fair" because the percentage is the same. And I rather like this idea, myself. Make the fat cats feel it just as much as those who don't make much. Otherwise a $35 parking ticket, or a $120 speeding ticket amounts to nothing more than a drop in the bucket for some Executive VP or CEO.
  14. LOVE those first two Mombasa albums, and interesting to hear that Carmell had played with them (even if for just a gig or two).
  15. Anybody know? Would love to hear more Joe material from this era. And speaking of live Joe from the 70's, anybody know if this 'Everest' LP (of dubious origin) ever made it to CD?? The LP is called "Jazz Patterns". (Even gray-market??) Date: September 24-26, 1970 Location: Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach, CA Label: Milestone Joe Henderson (ldr), Joe Henderson (ts), Woody Shaw (t, fh), George Cables (ep), Ron McClure (b, eb), Lenny White (d), Anthony Waters (cga) 1. Invitation - 15:30 (Bronislau Kaper, Paul Francis Webster) Everest LP 12": FS-363 - Jazz Patterns 2. Punjab - 8:30 (Joe Henderson) Everest LP 12": FS-363 - Jazz Patterns 3. Power To The People - 17:20 (Joe Henderson) Everest LP 12": FS-363 - Jazz Patterns "Punjab," "Power to the People" and the longer version of "Invitation" not part of the original release. These titles were released as bootlegs on the Everest label with the Henderson originals erroneously titled, "Lofty" and "What's Mine is Yours," respectively.
  16. . . . . . . And I've never gotten this one...
  17. I know (or at least used to know) two or maybe three of the guys on this release (including the main ringleader), and I'm not the only one on this board who can say that.
  18. Try having grown up in St. Louis, where "Celebration" happened to be the Baseball Cardinals theme song in 1982, the year they won the series. (Every year they had a different theme song.) That freakin' song was EVERYWHERE (in St. Louis), especially as the season got towards the end, and especially when and after they won. It was played over (guess I should say "under") seemingly every Cardinals advert and promo, and for a few months there, you could easily hear the tune (or little clips of it) 10 times a day, without even trying. I will loath that song until the day I die.
  19. I'd sorta half count this one as jazz-ish, the one from the funeral... John Mayer -- Human Nature -- Michael Jackson Memorial Tribute Tastefully done, I thought. ( And this sounds very much like Miles' arrangement, no? Hadn't really ever heard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BlKDXmdiUQ, but just did, and it sounds very close to both the tribue, and Miles' version. )
  20. Has anybody heard Steve Coleman's recent solo release?? Mostly alto I presume, but seem to remember he also plays some soprano on it. Appears to be on Zorn's label, if I remember right (only saw a copy once, when Coleman was playing in town a couple months ago). I know I'd LOVE to hear it once or twice, but knew I wouldn't spin it often enough to justify the expense.
  21. Which K&G albums (live or otherwise) had Michael Ray on them (of Sun Ra), and are there any in particular where he gets any solo space??
  22. Listened to this date three times today, and it's outrageously beautiful. I'd gladly pay import CD prices for a legit version of this on CD. What a find!!
  23. Lovin' it here. I'm sure the glass is half empty for some, but it's WAY half FULL here!!!
  24. Never heard of it, but damn, sounds interesting!! The main Joe Henderson discography says... Date: 1973 Location: New York City Label: Paramount Those of us in the U.S. (I think just the U.S.) can listen/stream the entire thing here (and legally, I think): http://free.napster.com/view/album/index.html?id=12070183 No review on the AMG, but it is listed (and supposedly it was reissued on CD in 2004).
