  1. Leaks happen. I don't think it circulates. Kinda crazy that I've probably listened to this date 5 or 10 times more than any other person ever (living or otherwise). (And maybe fitting, given how much I've wanted to hear it all these years, as some of you well know.)
  2. And I also have to confess that "the" Trainwreck™ is astounding ( ). 5 tunes plus 4 alternates (9 full-length takes in all, close to 70 minutes total if I remember), with some of THE most inventive 'out-leaning' Herbie I've ever heard on record. And the alternates are what make it work -- you really get to hear Tyrone's concepts, and can know (proof-positive) what he was trying for. Frankly, I think some of it even outshines "Natural Essence" (for instance, I think the slow (free) ballad on the unreleased session is much better than the slow (free) ballad which closes "Natural Essence"). Some of the tunes clearly are transitional between "Natural Essence" and "Roots", and presage where Tyrone was going on "Roots". I've had it for one full year (almost to the day), and probably listened to it easily close to 100 times. Warts and all, it's an astonishingly interesting date. I would rank all three of these sessions (both the Hills, and the Tyrone) right up there with "All Seeing Eye" and "Some Other Stuff", and maybe even "Fuchsia Swing Song". What crazy, insane dates do YOU love, that others think are a mess?? I’m not asking about Ornette's Free Jazz, or Cecil Taylor, where there is a strong division about the merits of the music (based on how open or conservative one's tastes are). But, rather, dates that really are questionable, even among those with big enough ears to appreciate lots of things (i.e. dates with messy heads, but "go for broke" soloing, etc...).
  3. That last disc of the Andrew Hill BN select is a monster. I know a number of people think it's a mess, and in some ways it is. But I can't get enough of it, especially that 10/31/67 session with Woody and Sam. I can't say it better than this: it is a desert island disc for me (disc #3 specifically).
  4. You're right, it's NOT a fire sale, and thank god it isn't (cuz that would only happen if they were going out of business). It's about as much of a sale as they can EVER afford to offer. I've been buying Mosaics "on sale" nearly every time they have one, and rarely is the discount any more than about 10% (at most). Their margins are already quite low to begin with. Hell, part of me thinks they should be a non-profit, and solicit donations -- in addition to selling their wares for 'revenue' (not for 'profit'), I guess probably like The Smithsonian's Folkways does (are there any other non-profit models for music distribution??). If I thought it would influence what they released, I'd give 'em a couple hundred dollars for sure (especially if I could write if off on my taxes). And if they said they'd release Tyrone Washington's unreleased BN leader-date, and also that one lead by Jackie McLean that Tyrone was a sideman on (plus Woody Shaw was on that date too, I think), I'd probably give 'em $500!! Anyway, I digress. They need every dollar we can spend these days. I appreciate saving a little (even if it's just the cost of shipping), and in return I'm gonna probably buy about four selects from them this time around (even one that isn't on sale). I can't write it off on my taxes, but I’m gonna think of it as doing my part to support Mosaic (and that's my story too my wife too!!).
  5. Others here will likely disagree, but I would avoid "Smokestack" as your very next purchase. It's piano, two basses, and drums -- and for some reason, that there are two basses has made this one of Hill's albums that grew on me the most slowly. And maybe not "Lift Every Voice" just quite yet, which has a wordless vocal choir, and is an album people seem to love or hate. The "Grass Roots" BONUS session is (IMHO) the better of the two dates on that disc, and is unique as it's Hill's only recording with Guitar (Jimmy Ponder) -- really something special, in my book. (Both dates are good, the 2nd one is better!!) Be interesting to see what you think of the Mosaic, most of which was previously unreleased. The last disc is totally crazy, including the session with Woody Shaw (and Sam Rivers) that is one of my alltime favorite Blue Note dates (warts and all). Woody totally goes for broke on that date. Stuff doesn't all fit together (and the heads are a mess at times), but I love it all the same. And... ...make sure you get the earlier 1989/90 'McMaster' edition (NOT the RVG from 2000), because only the McMaster has the entire session with Hill all on one disc. (Several Mobley albums around this time were bits from several sessions, and the recent RVG's restored the original "mishmash" non-session oriented style of release.) This appears to be it on Amazon.
  6. Think I'm going to go for the Paul Chambers finally (I've recently been really diggin' late 50's Coltrane (the first two Prestige boxes especially), far more than I'd expected to). And probably a 'safety' copy of the Hill BN Select. And maybe the Onzy Matthews Select (which isn't on sale, but what the heck). I've been eyeing the McCoy Tyner Select for some time, but I've already got all but 45 minutes of the material on CD - so that'd be about $1 a minute to pick up the rest of what I don't have. Really hard to justify (cost-wise), even at that sale price. But it is mildly tempting.
  7. Given what you already have, I'd go for the following next... Judgment! (1964) - no horns, just Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis, & Elvin Jones. A little thorny at times, but never the least bit "noisy" to my ears. In my experience, the tunes deepened over time, so give it three or four spins at least over a short period of time (with the same couple weeks). It probably won't grab you the first or second time even, but (IMHO) it's a sublime album that's worth the effort to get into. Pax (1965) - Joe Henderson & Freddie Hubbard on the front line, with Richard Davis & Joe Chambers. A little busier, and somewhat more knotty - but never quite "crazy" (but maybe close a time or two). Some of Joe's finest "in & out" playing, in my book (Freddie too, for that matter).
  8. As a kid, I used to love to watch Mission Impossible when it was in syndication (late 70's, maybe early 80's, give or take) -- missed it the first time around, as I was born in '69. Met Mr. Graves once in person on a fight to Spain back when I was in college (no, he wasn't the pilot). He had HUGE, almost freakishly large hands - I do remember that. I tried to say something nonchalant, like "loved your work on MI", or something of the sort. He graciously said 'thank you', as I recall, with an almost implied bow. RIP.
  9. Yup, he totally blows.
  10. I'm good for one. Somebody pester me about it, and I promise I'll get on it. Kind of a crazy month, this month and last too (come to think of it).
  11. Amen. How in the hell did that pic of Miles from the 70's get on the only (at one time) CD reissue of THE best-known jazz album of all time?? Unbelievable.
  12. uploading image, for when the eBay listing goes dead... Edit: Couldn't upload the the pic of the album cover (with the sticker), too big -- can somebody resize, and upload to this thread?? (Did get the single, though.)
  13. I'll second that. And FYI, the version at Target has two bonus tracks (not completely unreleased bonus tracks, but they're only otherwise available on one of the "Dagger" releases).
  14. I've never ordered from Newbury (well, maybe from them through Amazon a time or two, without even knowing it probably), but what the heck is up with their website not being in sync with what they have listed at Amazon?? Recently I found a couple things on Amazon's used marketplace that they had the lowest price on, and I thought I'd go direct to their site and get the same titles directly from them -- in part because I'd hoped to be able to combine shipping on multiple items, and save a little $$ (like you can do on half.com), but also because I really wanted Newbury to get more of (all) my cash (since they probably need it worse than Amazon does), even if I couldn't combine shipping. They're the little guy, and Amazon is a big corporate thing, so you can guess where (given a choice), where I'd want more of my money to go (especially in this economy). But I couldn't find the same titles they have on Amazon on their site, and vice versa. Makes me think (possibly) what they have listed in either place might be vaporware (stuff they don't have in stock, but think they can get from their sources – like that company (Caiman?) that took over Tower Records on-line presence). What gives?? My perceived impression of them was quite good (from what others have said here over the years), but I'm leery of on-line vendors that list lots of inventory that they might not really have. And not seeing the same inventory on their site and the Amazon site seems squirrely, at least to me. Either they HAVE something in stock, or they DON'T – it can't be two different ways at the same time, can it?
  15. Anybody know where this building is/was?? - and what it is/was?? (Came here to post it myself, only to find it was already here.)
  16. Don't have any advice if the cat is scratching the area, but if it's licking that's the problem -- ask your vet for some bitter herbs, which they should be able to give you in a little bottle, with an eye-dropper. I've got an old bottle for one of our cats from some time ago. It must be something out vet put together herself, as there isn't a technical name for the solution. The description is hand-written, just says: "Medicated Ptd & bitter". (No idea what the "Ptd" stands for, but I could call my vet and ask, if you like.) Rather than use an eye-dropper, we soaked the end of of a q-tip in the solution, and "painted" it on the spot with the q-tip. Even better than the q-tip idea, actually. Wish we had thought of that.
  17. According to this Amazon product description, it's a solo piano release. I'll probably wait for a couple reviews from here on the board, but I could be very interested in this one too.
  18. Pretty sure the BH Fan Club issues are CDR's (from what I've heard secondhand from a couple sources). I'm needing a replacement copy of this one myself (and only a real 'silver disc' will do for me). Loaned my copy to a friend about 3 years ago, and he and the world had the great misfortune that he passed away somewhat unexpectedly (he was about 50). Never followed up with his wife, as I barely knew her. If anybody has a line on 'real' versions of this title, do tell!
  19. There has been one 'legit' release of material by this band, on Japanese Sony... 1969 Miles - Festiva de Juan Pins Turns up, now and again, used. Going rate probably ought to be about $20, maybe as much as $25.
  20. I do too, but they certainly are different. Mighty big of Hutch to give Joe so much space on his dates. Nearly an hour of Chambers tunes (in total), if I remember correctly. I intended to make a CDR of all of them once, but never got around to it. I should at least remind myself of what all those Chambers tunes are (yes, I'm fishing to see if anybody already already has that list handy, or else I'll get to it myself one of these days).
  21. This isn't intended to be a dig (it's just the first thing I thought of). Here's a perfect soundtrack for whatever it is that's goin' on... I swear, sometimes I think Moon Rappin' is haunted. Nothin' else like it, that's for sure...
