Billy Strayhorn
Rooster_Ties replied to skeith's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I caught all but about the first 20 minutes here, and I was largely unaware of Strayhorn's story (well, I knew he was Ellington's primary and long-time collaborator, and I knew he was gay - but didn't know much beyond that). I have to say this documentary really cast Ellington in a different light for me. I've never been a huge Ellington "fanatic", in the sense of having lots of his recordings (which I don't have), though oddly enough I seem to have most of Ellington's output in a piano-trio format. But I've always held Duke in the very highest regard -- one of THE very greatest among The Greats. But this special really showed another side of Ellington, and one that wasn't always favorable. QUESTION: What ever was that tune that they showed footage of with Strayhorn playing contemplative piano (in a kind of impressionistic way), with the band breaking in with a rather raucous two-chord vamp - that appeared not to have one thing to do with what Strayhorn was playing?? That was COOL!!! -
That was fucking incredible! The length of some of his phrases is occasionally variable (at least to my ears, based on the music-bed he's singing over), so I also think it's also amazing that he ultimately kept in synch with the music-bed. I mean, it doesn't sound like live musicians backing him to me. And at times I wondered if it was even just percussion only, or with some sort of static pedal-tone underlying the whole thing. But near the end, there are definitely chords (or at least the roots of chords) in the music-bed, that follow (or rather, lead) what he's singing. In ANY case, it certainly is fucking incredible!! (Though my father-in-law would have absolutely hated it. )

If I might ask, what are the line-ups on his two Strata East dates?? Not at all familiar with him, that I can think of.

Yes and no. For years, the only Hank date I ever owned was the McMaster issue of "No Room for Squares" -- the one with the entire session that includes Andrew Hill. (And NO, I didn't get it cuz Andrew was on it. I just randomly got the date, totally by chance, long before I ever "got" or got into Hill.) I listened to that full Hill session McMaster version of "No Room for Squares" for years -- and I never really got Hank. That date NEVER made any sense to me, for years, not hardly a bit. So, I just stopped listening to it. Then, a few years later, I stumbled on "Third Season" -- and, man, I was suddenly hooked!!! And then I picked up "Slice of the Top" - and totally dug that too. Then, one by one, I got a whole bunch more Hank. Suddenly Hank made sense to me. THEN, after I realized/remembered that Hill was on "No Room for Squares" -- I went back (with my "Hill" ears on), and it suddenly made sense. Not in a "Hank" way, but in a "Hill" way it did. I won't say it's a Hill album (Andrew doesn't get one writing credit on it), but that "No Room for Squares" session with Hill isn't entirely a "Hank" date in my mind either. (And I still think "Third Season" is my favorite Hank date. )

Jazzgoat?? -
See the subject for the parameters of this thread. Bonus points if there are NO chordal instrument involved at all, though that isn't a restriction in this thread. (So anything all-acoustic (with chordal instruments, or not) IS fair game.) (But by the way, for the purposes of this thread -- vibes are OK to include (though still technically "plugged in"). Why?? Cuz vibes are NOT exactly an instrument that people bitch about when they bitch about electricity in jazz. ) So, who's taken on grease, and/or jazz/funk, and/or jazz-rock without really pluggin' in?? (And has ANYBODY ever covered ANY electric Miles (from 1969 or after) with an all-ACOUSTIC group?? Or how about electric Miles with an acoustic piano, at least??)

At the end of your life do you really want to see yourself as a pebble in humanity's shoe? I'll go on record as saying that I think both Chuck and Scott are both... 1) Valuable members of this on-line community (and often quite valuable!!). and 2) Royal pains in the ass sometimes (and sometimes even a HUGE pain in the ass). (And some here may well feel the same way about me. ) -

Programming no longer works on it. My best option is to shoot a message to a buddy who has Tivo, and try to watch it the next time I visit. Put in a blank tape on 6-hour mode (make sure it's rewound), and hit the record button around Midnight. You'll catch everything all night long -- for at least 6 hours. (No "programming" needed.) -
That mug shot looks more than just a little bit like the "changes in Meth-users mug shots over time". How someone could get through the rigors of study to get on a Space Shuttle mission, and then go off the deep end like this - is nearly beyond explaination. From the article... "Nowak's biography shows she is a 1985 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis with a degree in aerospace engineering, and a former test pilot who has logged more than 1,500 hours of flight in at least 30 types of aircraft. She joined the space program in 1996." The article also said... "Nowak -- who was a mission specialist on a Space Shuttle Discovery flight last summer..." Last summer?? Whatever has happened to her, sure happened quick. When I first heard the story on the news, I just assumed that who ever it was had not been on the Shuttle for like 10 years -- you know, somebody who's been out of NASA for quite some time.

unique and uncommon first names in jazz
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I almost listed Bix in my original post in this thread, but it appears that his full name was Leon Bismark Beiderbecke (the "Bix" was short for "Bismark"). Some discussion from Wikipedia, FWIW... -
Ornette is obvious -- did that name even exist before he got it? Same with Thelonious - did that name ever exist before Monk got it?? Hobart Dotson is another -- I'd never heard of the name "Hobart" before, but perhaps that was a slightly more common name back in the day. What other uncommon and/or unique first names are there in jazz -- and just how "unique" are they?? (in terms of the general population, that is).

Miles - On the Corner and Beyond
Rooster_Ties replied to Aggie87's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I dunno man, Star People, Decoy, & Aura all get it done rather nicely, I think. And I kinda wanna hear those Rubber Band sessions (I think that's what they were called), in full, including the material that later went into the Doo-Bop soup.
