They gave all Federal employees the day off when Reagan died. (My wife works for the Federal Dept. of Education.) Nixon too, she thinks. They probably gave the postal workers the day off both times as well.

Charles Tolliver Big Band - "With Love" (due Jan. 16th)
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in New Releases
I am SO glad Billy Harper's gonna be on this one. Harper was AMAZING on the relatively recent Grachan Moncur octet disc, and I can't wait to hear him here. -
OK, a stupid question I could probably dig for -- but I'll post it here for a better answer. Was there a separate (different) soundtrack released for the Quadrophenia movie?? Meaning different from the regular Quadrophenia release?? (Meaning different recordings of he same, or similar material.) And if different, how different?? I know there was a (star-studded) separate Tommy soundtrack, and I always wondered if there was a separate Quadrophenia soundtrack issued, and if it was worth seeking out. Thanks!!! (Oh, and if so -- has it ever been on CD??)

Sting had a bit part, like maybe 10 minutes on camera total. Been 20 years since I've seen it, can't remember the details. I totally agree - a great album, and far better than Tommy (which still isn't half bad).

FS/FT: Joe Henderson Milestone Years 8CD Box Set
Rooster_Ties replied to felser's topic in Offering and Looking For...
FWIW, I think "Black Narcissus" is one of THE best albums on this set. A little dated - especially with the syths used (early sequencers actually, I think - or something like that), but some fantastic playing. The tunes are great too -- including a couple remakes that are well worth hearing... 1 Black Narcissus (Henderson) 2 Hindsight and Forethought (Henderson) 3 Power to the People (Henderson) 4 Amoeba (Henderson) 5 Good Morning Heartache (Drake, Fisher, Higginbotham) 6 Other Side of Right (Henderson) The remakes of "Black Narcissus" and "Power to the People" are outstanding (IMHO). Maybe not as good as the originals (I'll grant you that) -- but I listen to this album as much as any on the entire Joe Milestone set -- seriously!! "Black Miracle" - on the other hand -- is a mixed bad. Some of it's good, some just OK. -
Blue notes on OTHER labels

There's one Wayne Shorter BN album from about 1970 that was licenced to One Way (if I remember correctly), that that's the only CD release it's ever seen. (Can't remember the title, and I'm at work away from my copy.) -
I've got Bill Crow's "Jazz Anecdotes" book, if anybody can suggest some favorites. Unfortunately I have to work all day tomorrow (yeah, I work Saturdays), and have plans Saturday evening - so my time to skim through the entire book before Sunday morning will be a bit limited. Specific suggestions from "Jazz Anecdones" would be incredibly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

(Or about Jazz in general, I suppose -- if they're particularly good.) Oh, I should also mention that this is for a Unitarian-Universalist church, so the quotes and/or short readings need not be of a traditionally religious nature. They probably can be, but they needed necessarily be. And FYI, I only need about 2 minutes of material total (3 minutes, tops).

The two "live in Berlin" things are one in the same (I'm 99% sure). "Compassion" is a unique date (a Strata East release), recorded in Nov. 1977, with a fairly unique line-up as well (all Tolliver compositions). Tolliver - trumpet Nathen Page(!) - guitar Steve Novosel - bass Alvin Queen - drums Earl's World (12:47) Impact (5:40) Compassion (11:00) Truth (9:51) Page is a fantistically interesting guitar player, who I'm really rather fond of. He also has a rather unorthodox playing method. Here's a description from an on-line review... I'll do some digging and come up with a partial discography for Page when I get the chance. "Compassion" has been released on CD once, in Germany in 1991 (on Bellaphon), but for some reason or another - it hasn't ever been released on Charly in the mid-to-late 90's (like most of Tolliver's other Strata dates have). I got mine on eBay from a UK seller a few years ago, probably for around $25 (including shipping), and it was worth every penny. Well worth seeking out, whether you're interested primarily for Toiliver, or the rare "trumpet, guitar, bass drums" line-up, or Nathan Page. GREAT album, all the way around!! (Note: Page does spell his first name "Nathen", though it's often mispelled the "correct" (more common) way as "Nathan". It is mispelled as Nathan on the CD of "Compassion" that I own, for instance.)

Charles Tolliver Big Band - "With Love" (due Jan. 16th)
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in New Releases
Or give your old Tolliver CD's to somebody else who would enjoy them. (That's what I did -- to a musician buddy of mine who doesn't often have the coin to spring for CD's.) The cost might bug you for a few days, but you'll be glad you did in the long run. I sure was. -

Speak Like a Child has two or three bonus tracks, the McMaster had none. One of the bonus tracks features an extended "solo-piano" piano solo (is that how you say that?), that is nothing short of stunning. All the bonus tracks were also featured on the complete Herbie BN leader-date box, but the RVG was the first time the entire session had been released as an idividual title.

You're more than half not-kidding about the thrash banjo -- damn!! Nice gimmick playing the violin with a looped string (I'm assuming that's what I'm seeing and hearing).

One of my all-time favorite BJP discs, by far. Reasonable price or not, this NEEDS to be heard. -
I take it nobody else saw Colbert last night? As we were watching it, I got to tell my wife... "Hey, see that guy -- that guy THERE -- he's on my jazz board!!"
