  1. Every time the page loads for me, BOTH clips play at the same time - automatically. I did listen to each separately (and they're both cool), but --- DAMN --- together, that's one beautiful fucked up mess!!!
  2. Listen to what plays automatically at the link, people. I mean that shit's even crazier (rhythmically, speaking) than this!!!... DAMN!!!!
  3. Jesus Christ, those polyrhythms are NUTS!!! (Click the link, people -- same exact link as in the post above.) How'd you guys do that?? My god, man, that shit's crazy!!!!!
  4. Crazy idea, sure, but you never know.
  5. I'd start by pinning this topic, and/or starting a new topic (and pinning it too). This is a big-ass deal, and my guess is you've got about 5-days to solve this problem -- if the solution turns out to involve buying a case that has to be sent/shipped to you. I'm sure there's a solution out there, but getting the right eye-balls seeing your problem is half the problem/solution right there. Anything special about your axe that the solution-provider should know about?? Will just any "guitar flight case" do?? Have you been able to find anything even close to what you need?? And if so, what was it, and why wouldn't it work?? IMHO, this needs to be an all-hands-on-deck kinda thing, until you get what you need, since time is rather limited
  6. I'm not about to suggest that I'm "right" about this, but to me -- "Shades" is just a shade too conventional. It's certainly not a bad album, but it's not got a lot of what I pick up an Andrew Hill album for (whatever that means ). There are a few people here who love it, and I certainly won't take that away from them. But for me, "Shades" is one of the Hill dates I spin the very least out of all of them.
  7. I concur on all points. Also, he has a name like a spy (sent from Saturn?). Maybe I'm confusing that date with another one. There's one Hill trio date (from the 70's, or maybe the early 80's) where the drummer doesn't have a clue (or at least didn't fit with the rest of the group). I was at work when posting my earlier comments, and I should have waited to check my discs at home before singling out that third disc.
  8. 'Conflict' is a killer album! It's also out on OJC! One to get... I'll second that. Conflict is fantastic!!! Make sure you get the more recent OJC (and not the expensive Japanese import), cuz the new OJC has three bonus tracks, of about 20-minutes extra material. (The bonus is not on the import issue.)
  9. Me too. I don't dislike Rossy, but Ballard really kicks things up a notch or two (in terms of energy) -- which I think Mehldau's music needs sometimes.
  10. And he'll be pushin' 40 in probably just a few short years. A true original.
  11. I've probably heard 80% (maybe 85%) of the man's officially released material (sideman dates included), and there's probably only 2 or maybe 3 titles that I find anything less than compelling. (You probably want me to name names... I've never gotten as deeply into "Smokestack" as all of the rest of his BN output. And "Shades" has never quite done it for me (though I know it's a favorite of several people here). And I guess the third one is "Nefertiti" - which suffers from having a drummer who isn't quite in Hill's and Richard Davis' league.) Not everything the man touches turns to gold, but man -- nearly everything he's done is WAY interesting, quite a bit is "great" -- and most of it's pretty damn good.
  12. Don't know the reason, but IIRC, Boplicity is credited to Miles' mother (her maiden name too). Cleo Henry, as I recall (too lazy to get up and look, but I think that's right). Didn't I just say that? I just was answering your question.

  14. Jim (b3-er), I see you're lookin' at this thread. What Hill do you like best?
  15. Let me add to the chorus, the two dates I would most highly suggest are... Black Fire and Passing Ships "Judgement" is also pretty damn good. (Hell, I think ALL of it's good, or at the very least REALLY interesting -- but I'm a Hill fanatic, so I'm not very objective about these things. I even LOVE that last disc of the Hill BN Select -- the crazy date(s) with Woody Shaw and Sam Rivers. It's totally NUTS, but wonderfully so. )
  16. <-- must click here Le Grand Content examines the omnipresent Powerpoint-culture in search for its philosophical potential. Intersections and diagrams are assembled to form a grand 'association-chain-massacre'. which challenges itself to answer all questions of the universe and some more. Of course, it totally fails this assignment, but in its failure it still manages to produce some magical nuance and shades between the great topics death, cable tv, emotions and hamsters. http://www.clemenskogler.net/grandcontent
  17. And it's "fucking" -- not just fuckin'.
  18. There's a tune on the album called "F-cking Boyfriend". / / AMG Review EDIT: I'm liking the tunes from the myspace page. Might pick this one up. Still can't figure why it's on BN, but the music is strangely captivating. 'nother pic... Just got to the chorus of "Fucking Boyfriend". / "Would you ever be my, would you be my fucking boyfriend? - ahh ahha ah, ahha ah..."
  19. http://www.bluenote.com/detail.asp?SelectionID=10607 http://www.bluenote.com/news.asp?NewsID=417 <-- "news page" from BN Several full-length tunes here... http://www.myspace.com/thebirdandthebee When push comes to shove, I could care less what they release on the label. But even this makes less sense than Norah Jones on BN. (And for the record, neither Bird & Bee nor Norah bother me be being on Blue Note -- not a bit.) Just a head-scratcher, though. Hoping this doesn't just turn into a "bitch about BN" thread, that's not why I'm starting this thread. So why am I starting it?? -- hell if I know!
  20. Looking to book some airline tickets SOON -- within the next few days (using frequent flyer miles, so we need to book early!!) Probably gonna spend a good 4-6 days in Boston, and then (before or after Boston) for several more days we want to drive around and peep some at the Fall leaves while we're there. Any suggestions about the best time to go?? Everything on-line says the peak time for the Fall colors is anywhere from the last week in Sept. to the first two weeks in Oct. - and that it varies a bit from year to year. If you were going, would you err on the side of maybe going a little too early?? - OR later in that window?? ALSO, any advice as to whether Danbury CT is worth visiting specifically for the Charles Ives stuff there?? I understand his boyhood home is now a museum (at least it was last time I checked (on-line) a few years ago). I was a HUGE Ives nut years ago (still am, at heart), and I thought if I was that close, it'd maybe be worth my time -- but I'd love to hear from anybody who's been there before. Thanks!!! Other suggestions for stuff to do and see in New England (and Boston, of course), would be welcome. Thanks again!!!
  21. UPDATE -- as of Jan. 27th. I didn't know anything about my friend's condition for well over a week (I've not always in the loop about updates about his condition, or else they've been few and far between), but I got the go-ahead about his condition, and visited him twice Monday, and the news is mixed. The good news is that he DIDN'T have bacterial meningitis -- which can really fuck you up (and usually does, especially if not discovered quickly -- that is, if it doesn't kill you). BUT, he did appear (as best the doctors can tell) to have had a pretty bad stroke. (I say "pretty bad" -- but I really don't know how else to characterize it -- the event was anything but non-significant. But I'm sure there are worse strokes too.) Also, he's only 36 years old (give or take a year). It may have been two strokes, actually, the second happening about 7 to 10 days after the first one (after my last update post up above). I'm not completely clear on the chronology of things (and not being a member of the family - it's not that important that I understand every detail of his condition, or how he got where he is). Currently he has near total paralysis on his left side (and he's left-handed too). When I last visited him the night before last, he said he only had about 10% movement in his left hand, and maybe 15% in his left leg. The good news, of course, is that there appears not to be much brain damage, if any. His speech has been a bit affected by the stroke, but I thought his speech was rather good, all in all. He's not difficult to understand, and I think I could probably clearly understand almost everything he says if I were talking on the phone with him. His outlook is pretty good (all in all), and his sense of humor is well intact. His cognitive abilities appear to be largely unaffected -- though with some sluggishness, and difficulty in thinking of just what he wants to say at times, or finding the words he's looking for. (That may also be an affect of the drugs they have him on too, to some extent.) Anybody know of any good books for and/or about stroke victims?? Their recovery?? Specifically about younger stroke victims?? His road to recovery will be long -- probably the better part of a year (my wild guess), and it's hard to know how much mobility he'll get back on his left side. I'm thrilled that there wasn't any or much brain damage, and my dear friend is "all there" - if you know what I mean. But I know it's gonna be a long, long road to recovery for him -- and recovery may not be complete. I'm planning to visit him at least weekly, and twice a week when I can fit it in. He's always been a really sweet and wonderful person, and he needs his friends now more than ever. (And he said the last time I saw him Friday night, that having friends around is really helping push him to communicate, and interact with a world that's otherwise been pretty much gone for him since the first of the year.) Don't know how to wrap this up. I've probably said too much, but since I started this thread - I figured I'd better update things.
  22. Here's a stupid question... Why hasn't anyone posted in this thread for over two years??
