re: the cover -- I've seen better, I've seen worse. Don't love it, nor do I hate it. From the samples, this sounds like it's gonna be AMAZING!!! -
Ornette Coleman to be honored at Grammy Awards
Rooster_Ties replied to brownie's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Am I right in assuming that Ornette hasn't ever even been nominated before, let alone won?? (I'm assuming "no" on both counts.) -
Interestingly, the Mosaic name/logo also appears on the cover of this one (along with the BN logo)... Also up on the Bluenote site (HERE), with the following description... Amazon listing, with soundclips

Way to let down the Nation last night, Anderson. You just had to vote for The Decemberists, didn't you. Thankfully, even without your help, Colbert (well, and Peter Frampton) were still victorious!!! And what's with that weenie, Elliot Spitzer?? Had to recuse himself? What the hell?? What a wanker.

For those that thought I was crazy to consider Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence" (original version)... Here's a nice unplugged version that maybe shows the tune in a better light. Subtract the voice, and this "piano plus vocal" version is not too far from what it might sound like on handbells. "The Sound of Silence" will still be the main selection (played during the offering, probably a good 4½ minutes long), and I'm only thinking of the Depeche Mode tune as a 2 to 2½ minute prelude, at the beginning of the service -- after the announcements, and before the opening words by the minister. I think MG's suggestion (quote below) is instructive... So I've got one tune for the older crowd (the Paul Simon), and one for 20 and 30 somethings (the Depeche Mode). Nothing like trying to do a little programming for multiple generations.

That's probably one more than I did.

I've got a buddy of mine already arranging the Simon and Garfunkel tune "The Sound of Silence" for the church handbell choir I've been directing for the past year. It's for a church service having something to do with meditation, silence, quiet, etc... (don't know much more than that). And I'm looking for a second handbell piece to go along with the same theme. "In the Still of the Night" occurred to me as one possibility. Doesn't have to be a jazz tune -- in fact, well-known standards or pop tunes (at least something that would translate OK for a handbell choir) would probably be best. Something without a lot of syncopation would also probably be good. Thanks!! PS: I also told our minister about John Cage's "4:33", which might be something interesting to "perform" before the sermon (where we normally have a moment for silent meditation anyway). Is there sheet-music for 4:33 commonly available?? What does it look like?? It is all identical measure-long rests, or are the rests of variable length and variable number per measure?? I thought it would be nice to maybe project one page of "4:33" onto an overhead screen at that point in the service (or include it as the background on the front cover of that week's church bulletin). I suppose, if necessary, I could get my buddy to create an approximation of what the music for 4:33 probably looks like -- that would probably be easy enough too. (Heck, he might even get a kick out of doing an "arrangement" of 4:33, come to think of it. ) Thanks again!!

Marco Eneidi/Lisle Ellis/Peter Valsamis touring...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Bringing up a thread that's over two years old. There's now a boatload of Sound On Survival clips on Youtube (just added within the last few weeks). I stumbled on them totally by accident, for the first time tonight... Youtube search on "Marco Eneidi" Unbelievable group -- check it out!! -
Probably not something you can find (in stock) at a store near you, but for her next birthday -- get her the 1921 Erwin Stein arrangement of Mahler #4 for chamber group -- i.e., about 12 or 13 players, as I recall -- > standard string quartet plus bass, plus a standard wind quintet, plus persussion, plus either harmonium or celeste (I forget which). There are two recordings of this arrangement (the 2nd one I only discovered just now, trying to search on-line for info about the first for this post)... 1921 Chamber group arrangement of Mahler 4 (the version I own, and enjoy) a review of another recording of the same arrangement (which I've not heard, but might try to track down) Others here may disagree, but I've gotten a kick out of this arrangement. There are also wonderful duo-piano arrangements of Mahler #6 and #7, which I love. Those might make a wonderful Mahler gift sometime as well. They are paired together in a two-disc set (for the price of one!!). Zemlinsky did one of the arrangements, and I always forget who did the other one (somebody early 20th century). Mahler - Symphonies 6 & 7 (Piano duo versions) two discs (MD&G) for the price of one.
