John Patton <-- Wikipedia link All it (currently) says is this... At least Larry Young's Wikipedia article at least says this much (currently)... Though I'm sure it could be improved upon as well. I've never done a major edit to a Wikipedia aticle before, but I have corrected a few details here and there to several articles. Text edits (even with links for citations) are pretty easy -- no harder than posting on this board. And if we want to get fancy about it (to include pictures or formatted text), we can even do that too. I was thinking of a whole bunch of musicians, actually, that could use some Wikipedia help, but thought we should start somewhere where the Organissimo board's help would have the most logical connection. And what better place to start than with John Patton. (In other words, we can take on Tyrone Washington's entry (or lack thereof) some other day. )

Gonna be $60 here in KC. I'm tempted, but I still think that's pretty pricy. But when push comes to shove, an extra $10 or $15 more than I think it's really worth ain't gonna stop me. Check out this thread from JC

I'm just now joining the party, though I hardly seem to have the energy to wade through that lengthy JC thread. Before I dig in (sooner or later), are we SURE this really IS Stanley Crouch?? Seems like the possibility of an elaborate hoax. -
Two suggestions for forums within the Big O
Rooster_Ties replied to Big Al's topic in Forums Discussion
Good arguments probably to be made on both sides of this case. Perhaps once Jim has weighed in with his opinion (which, let's face it, counts a wee bit more than any of the rest of us ), then maybe he'll decide to start a poll to see what the general consensus is. -
Two suggestions for forums within the Big O

When one individual thread gets THAT long -- a separate forum might well be in order. Otherwise that one thread might continue to grow and grow and grow -- and who knows how long threads can really get??? So then, how does this sound?? 1) create a separate Funny Rat forum (with an appropriate forum description sub-heading) 2) move the existing Funny Rat thread to the new forum 3) lock it -- yes, lock the oroginal Funny Rat thread (cuz, sheesh, how damn long can one thread get??!!!) 4) pin it (so it doesn't drift down into nothingness, never to be seen again). 5) and rename it "The original thread that begat an entire forum!!" -- or something like that. And then the Gary Thomas beating?? Some backstory here (about Gary) that I'm not aware of??

The first time I read this above, I thought it said Blakey in 1968, and that along with the "only played together six months" thing made me think for about 10 seconds that it was gonna be the unrecorded Blakey band with Woody Shaw and Tyrone Washington. Then I looked again, saw 1958, and my hopes were dashed. Oh well, easy come, easy go. -

Oh what the hell, give mine an appropriate bump too. Thanks!! -
I thought perhaps a few of us here might like to give The Bastards™ some feedback about their on-line store. Lord knows this board alone has probably collectively bought enough stuff from The Bastards™ to fund a hell of a chunk of the IT costs of these upgrades. So, I figure we might as well help 'em get it right.

Well, I was gonna guess the obvious (tp), but then look at T.S. Monk.

Didn't realize he played. What's his axe?

It's been on the "upcoming releases" list for going on something like 4 years. I'll believe it when I see it. Great material -- both the already-issued show on Japanese Sony from the early 90's, and the other show (the day before, if I recall right), which hasn't ever been issued legally. Fantastic material, actually. -
Joe Lovano. I haven't lost all respect for him -- just interest. With each passing year, his tone and/or attack bugs the hell out of me more and more and more. Always sounds to me a little like he's chewing on his mouthpiece as he plays. Can't get past it, sorry.

In truth, my favorite might be the one with Joe Henderson, but I gave the official nod to Don Cherry. There are other trio recordings with Joe, but precious few with Cherry (and this might be Cherry's only one from the last decade of his years). Thus the Cherry is the most important, IMHO - at least to me.

FWIW, Blakey in '69 at the Fillmore East would have probably included Woody Shaw and Tyrone Washington!!! :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile: source April? 1969: Woody Shaw-tpt; Tyrone Washington-tsx; George Cables-p; Scotty Holt-b Wollman Auditorium, Columbia University, NYC (February 24, 1969) [db 3/20/69 p.15] Loeb Student Center, New York University, NYC (March 3, 1969) [db 3/20/69 p.15] Fillmore East, NYC (March 9, 1969) [db 3/20/69 pp.14, 52] Black Bottom, Montreal, Canada (April? 1969) [Coda 6/69 p.34] Café La Boheme (early April-early May 1969) [Voice] [this is questionable considering the below activity] -

I think I like Sinatra all the more specifically because he really doesn't swing exactly. Come to think of it -- of the very few jazz singers I do like (I can probably count them on one hand), almost none of them swing, or else they swing rather unconventionally. Andy Bey, Jean Carn, somebody else I'm forgetting. (I'm in Colorado this week for work, and can't check my collection for others -- but that may be close to the full extent of the jazz singers I own.) I've never thought of Sinatra as being particularly a "jazz singer" for some reason. He sings with jazz, sure, but he's not at all what I think of when I think of "jazz singers".

It wasn't that I specifically didn't think they'd come throught. Rather, I just wanted to know if anyone else had used them before (and gotten their discs), before I became the test case. Knowing that others transactions have been successful, I'm sure I'll be placing an order quite soon. If they're slow to send their wares, that's not a problem -- as long as I know that might be the case, and as long as I know I won't be left hangin'. Plenty of Black Jazz that I find very tempting.
