God I hope this story is overblown right now!!!

Fuck is right... source -
If I were gonna pick just one Mehldau title to suggest, I'd go with "Art of the Trio Vol 3. - The Songs". Although, one could probably argue that nearly all of his releases are uniformly good – and, well -- they're also all uniformly uniform. Or at least that’s probably the case for all of his trio records (the category which the majority of his releases fall under). In that sense, practically any of his “Art of the Trio” records (vols. 1-5) are equally worthy of a spin. I guess I could add that the “live” ones (Art of the Trio - vols 2, 4 & 5), are probably more adventuresome than the “studio” ones (vols 1 & 3 -- plus his “Introducing Brad Mehldau” debut release, and his most recent trio record: “Anything Goes”). The oddball Mehldau releases are as follows… “Largo” was produced by a Rock producer, and is by far the most adventuresome record Brad’s ever turned out (at least IMHO). It has an extended line-up, including a brass quintet on some tracks, a woodwind quintet on others, and Brad plays vibes on some tracks. Some love it, some dislike it (including some who probably really dislike it). It ain’t a perfect record, but at least Brad was trying new things – and that ALWAYS gets points in my book. That said, I think it’s a VERY interesting release, and one I’m very glad I own. More oddballs... “Elegiac Cycle” is a solo disc, and is really outstanding (IMHO). “Places” is half solo, and half trio tunes, and is also quite good (and the solo tunes alternate with the trio tunes - and the effect works quite well). “Live in Tokyo” is another solo outing (which I haven’t heard yet). Still, all that said, if I were picking just one -- I'd still probably go with "Art of the Trio Vol 3. - The Songs". Anybody think otherwise?? Happy to hear what others think about Brad's output.

Recent recap of the current situation from the mayor of New Orleans: CLICK HERE. In a nutshell, the mayor says... "We have 80 percent of our city underwater. In some parts of the city, the water is as deep as twenty feet. "We have people still trapped on their roofs. "We have an incredible amount of water in the city. Both airports are underwater. "The twin spans in New Orleans East are destroyed. They're gone. "We have three huge boats that have run aground. We have an oil tanker that is also run aground. And leaking oil. "We have a serious levee break at 17th Canal. It's causing waters to continue to rise in certain sections of the city. "We have houses that have literally been picked up off of their foundations and moved. "The yacht club on the lake has burned and is destroyed. "I must tell people who are driving around that if you drive on the highrise, we're not sure about the structural soundness of the high-rise, because it appears that a barge has hit one of the main structures of the high-rise. "This is a briefing that I got from FEMA. "All of Slidell is under water. "We have gas leaks that have sprout out, and even when they are under water, you will see a flame shooting out of the water. It's not a pretty picture. -
There was (still is??) a bar not far from Wrigley (across the street, if I remember), called The Cubby Bear. That's where I saw Sun Ra in about 1990, with about a 12-14 member version of the Arkestra in tow. No idea if the bar is still there or not, but that might be a good venue to consider too.

How about Strata East?? My guess would be the Tolliver's "Music Inc + Big Band" (the one with the white cover). Or were there ever any "hits" on the label that I'm otherwise unaware of??

Miles' Farmhouse
Rooster_Ties replied to spinlps's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I'll be damn -- that's about six miles from where I'll be for the next week, for some leadership training I'm going to, just outside of St. Louis. Here's more about that, from another post I just made elsewhere←. I'll have to print out a map from the address in the article, and pay a visit - if I get the chance. Thanks!!! PS: Both where I'm going this week, and the farm house where Miles lived in Millstadt, are about 20 miles from where I grew up --- near Belleville, IL. -
Got my copy of the new Big "O" disc in the mail a couple days ago, and have listened to it two – almost three times through. GREAT job, guys!!! The Zappa tune is primo, and I can't wait to hear the disc several times more, to really start to get my ears and head - around and inside more of the originals on the disc. FYI: I will be out of town for the next 7 days, and totally without any internet access – so don't send out any search parties for me just cuz I ain't nowhere to be found. I'm off to some leadership training for a not-for-profit organization that I'm doing quite a bit of volunteer work for of late. I'm currently an adjunct member of their governing board, and will likely to be taking on more responsibility within the organization soon. Wish it was a paid position, but it may lead to other things - and the experience will likely be very helpful, and fulfilling too (hopefully). The org is very young (less than one year old), and growing quickly. Kind of exciting to be getting in on the ground floor of things, before anyone can say “but we’ve always done it that way before” – about anything. Anyway, back on topic – I LOVE the new disc, guys, and I already can't wait for the next one. Let’s all hope it takes off like wildfire, and becomes the incredible success (commercially) that we all know it really already is (artistically). Major kudos – you absolutely deserve it.

Did Miles ever take a solo on piano (on record), or just comp??

Sounds like truth in advertising to me. I mean, some places sell funnel cakes, and others sell donuts. But when you really get down to it – it's all really just... -
C wrote every tune, and he's actually on the date, so in my book -- it gets filed under C.

France??!!! What the hell???? ECM's are expensive enough as it is (they're almost always full list price everywhere I see them, and almost never on sale), and then they go and reissue some seriously interesting titles like these three -- and only release them in FRANCE!!!!

Here's a handy-dandy LINK - for easier downloading (same source as above).

Bought it ten+ years ago, read it back then, and remember it as being a mostly pretty interesting read, if a bit on the dry side – a bit like an extended academic paper. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) Then again, it’s certainly not the driest book I’ve ever read either (and not by a long shot). The text is well documented, with 30+ footnotes per chapter, most of which are well annotated. Perhaps the greatest value to some might be the selected bibliography, which is HUGE (well over 300 entries, maybe closer to 400 even). I don’t think I knew enough back then to have formed a well-qualified opinion about the book. I’ll be interested in hearing what others here thought of it.

No but I heard he did do a duets album with Dick Hyman ←

By the way, I’ve been silent on this subject, mostly because of small handful of people who wanted to get all pissy about things, (“a promise is a promise”), or who otherwise wanted to get ugly over things. I felt the most dignified response was no response at all (simply because I couldn’t think of a dignified way to respond). Yes, I absolutely over-promised, under-delivered, and I fucked this thing up royally. If you knew me personally, this probably wouldn’t come as any surprise to any of you. I took 6 months to get one of you your discs in another trade, but when I did finally come through – I included everything promised, plus and extra 10 or 12 burns of what I thought was some rather amazing stuff, including scans of covers, and everything. I vaguely remember including an extra silver disc (or two?) in the deal too, though the details escape me now. In another instance, I recently took an extra month-to-six-weeks to get someone their Don Cherry Mosaic in another trade, but I included 7 or 8 extra burns of some other rather amazing material, and I included a legit silver-disc as a freebie to make up for the unnecessary delay. And long before the “pay-it-forward” thread, I sent somebody else a couple OOP discs (both of them sealed), simply because I thought they’d enjoy them. (And they weren’t 2nd-rate material either. Both discs were among my own personal top-20 favorite classical discs, both OOP, both somewhat rare and very obscure, and discs I frequently give as “calling cards”, whenever I find duplicates at a reasonable price.) Yes, clearly I’m NOT very good at meeting deadlines, particularly when what I need to deliver is complicated or convoluted. But I do always come through in the end. You’ll all get your stuff soon, and the answers too.

I have about 50 to 60 discs yet to burn for my BFT (including the bonus Woody Shaw discs), to include with all the "Pay It Forward" discs that I agreed and still intend to send out (to approximately 14-15 people). I can only burn about 5 discs per hour (my drive only burns at 8x speed), and I get "buffer over-run" errors about once every 4 or 5 discs -- so I'm looking at a good solid 12 hours minimum of burning yet to do (changing discs every 10-minutes or so). Plus, every time I get a "buffer over-run" error when burning either of the Woody Shaw discs, I have to re-read my source discs (from scratch) -- because when I try to put an image of the discs on my hard drive, I get gaps of silence between the tunes on all subsequent burns -- and personally I hate track gaps on continuous live recordings. (Also, I only have one CD drive, for both reading and writing, so having to rescan both Woody Shaw discs every time I get a buffer over-flow, which has been particularly time consuming.) That, plus digging through 200 plus PM's in my inbox to try and find all the addresses for people, and figure out what free discs I promised to whom. (Especially when the subject-lines of the PM’s all just say something like “BFT”). Oh, and make sure I don’t include anybody I’ve already sent discs too (from among the 40 or so BFT’s that have already been sent out directly, or through the tree), all of who’s associated PM’s are all still in my inbox too – mixed in with everything else (again, all with subject lines that don’t give me any clue as to the status of whether someone has been serviced or not, or if they need one or more “pay it forward” free discs from me). Yes, I bit off WAY more than I could chew, but I do sincerely intend to finish this thing off soon -- hopefully yet this month (and by that, I mean August). And, yes, this is THE worst-managed BFT in the entire history of this forum. Everyone will get all their stuff, one of these days soon I hope. With that many people yet to get their discs (about 15 people), I felt I shouldn't reveal the answers just yet. That, and I still need to type up all the answers and find album covers for everything, etc... You'll all get your stuff, and the answers too -- when I find the time to finish this thing off. Your continued patience is most appreciated.

Not sure this nets a complete list, but it should... Go to the True Blue search page (HERE), and type this into the KEYWORD seach field: Prestige 10" LP Then check the radio-button marked "Album Title", and then hit the search button. Brings up 24 titles.

Milt Ward (trumpet) - "and Virgo Spectrum" - circa 1976
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Of all things, I just found a full-length audio track from this album, on-line. It's on THIS PAGE (www.freischwimmen.de), in the middle of a real-audio stream that's two hours and twenty minutes long. Click on the link (above), and do a page-search for the phrase "Milt Ward", then click on the link above the play-list where the Ward tune shows up (named "Mr. Cheese"). Here's the complete entry... That, or else maybe THIS LINK (monofunk.net/download/jazzcrate.ram) might work directly. The Ward track "Mr. Cheese" (from this album) appears to begin shortly after the 1:11:30 mark (where there is a cross-fade from the prior track). Ward's solo begins a few seconds after 1:14:45 (and it's not at all a half-bad solo ), and the track ends shortly before 11:17:45. Note: You can use the real-player scroll thingy to go directly to the beginning of the track (at 1:11:30). -
Another possible source is eBay's www.half.com. That, or else eBay itself -- search on "miles davis plugged". Looks like one went recently for only $51 (plus about $9 or $10 shipping), so there are occasionally pretty good bargains to be had.
