"Yo, Miles" - and other Electric Miles tributes
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I listened to most of the latest "Yo Miles!" release today (all of disc #1, and half of disc #2), while I was in the same room with my wife, who was reading the Sunday paper, and kinda watching some college hoops with the mute on (since her beloved Jayhawks lost, she's less fanatical about college b-ball than usual). Anyway, I was pretty surprised that she managed to sit through almost 2-hours(!) of this kind of material, without ever telling me to change it to something else. She's not much of a fan of busy, "noodly" jazz (especially with saxophone) -- but somehow the "Yo! Miles" stuff (even with lots of Greg Osby ) didn't bug her nearly as much as most of my other favorite jazz music. Nothing more to report about this, I guess. Just an interesting observation, and one I hadn't expected. Edit: Except to say that I'm sure she would have had me turn off similar-sounding stuff from Miles himself, say, if I had put on any of his live material from the 70's. Or, really, most of his studio material from that era too. I wouldn't call the "Yo Miles!" stuff "Electric Miles"-lite. But, for some reason, it does go down a little easier. Less "screaming" sax solos, is one thing. -
A little 2nd rate, sure, but I think they're pretty damn interesting -- especially as examples of what must be one of the first overt reactions to what Miles 2nd Quintet was doing circa 1967. They're important, historically, and they're not at all half bad. I'd buy both of them for sure, and if they came out on Water -- they'd stand a better chance of both coming out. And they wouldn't take up slots in the stream of Conns, that could otherwise be filled with other material.
-
I've done some stupid shit over the years myself -- happens to the best of us. I definitely feel your pain.

What happens if I end up on everyone's ignore list???
-
I'm with Chuck, better to release 'em through Water. In fact, I think I'd almost rather have two, separate Kenny Cox issues from Water (2 CD's), rather than a combined "two-LP's on one CD" issue from Blue Note. (Though that's a tough call.) (And I'm pretty sure Water would do them separate, since they don't seem to be interested in the "bonus track" route. For example, both the Eddie Gales could have fit on one CD (if I remember right), but Water did them separately.) The Cox dates seem much more worth of Water, than being released as part of the Conn series. They are a bit on the 2nd rate side, but I'm sure many of us here would buy 'em, myself included. In any case, I sure as hell hope BN doesn't release just one of the Cox date as a Conn, cuz then we'd NEVER get the other one -- cuz the first one wouldn't sell for shit. Let Water have 'em.

So what's the final audit say about the Kenny Cox timings?? (Or am I gonna hafta turn my house upside down, and try to find my burns of both of them, and answer the damn question myself??? ) Edit: But even if I do, that don't tell the story of what the stated timings are, as printed on the LP's themselves (if, in fact, the timings are printed on the label).

Loved the old Avatar (the take-off of the Tyrone Washington cover). Maybe it's time to commission another (different) Moose-themed Blue Note cover, from AfricaBrass and/or Couw, or anyone else who wants to give it a go. (That would've been my vote, had that been an option in the poll.)

ROTFLMAO!!!!!
-
Probably a pretty good idea. Since I already own the McLean Mosaic, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't buy a Conn with just Consequence on it. But if it included all the High Frequency tracks too, I'd certainly give it some thought.
-
I don't know. That second one really does look like quite a bit like McShann, doncha think?? Somebody let me know if all these hot-linked pics aren't comin' through OK. Thanks!!
-
I thought it looked like McShann too (meaning the photo in the 2nd post). (Living in Kansas City these past 10 years, I've seen pictures of him, here and there, more often that I would have otherwise.)
-
Yup, far as I know. Wonder what they'll call it?? Certainly not "Back From The Gig", or one would at least hope not.
-
I'm still pining for the Tyrone Washington, including a good bit of the train-wreck (hopefully everything but the track with the vocal gyrations, or so I've heard them described). But all in good time, all in good time. I didn't think we'd see the Tyrone this time around necessarily anyway. My goal is either the 2006 or 2007 batch of Conns. Anything after that, and I'll start getting jumpy about it. Can't be Passing Ships and the Hill Select every time.
-
OK, sticking my nose where it doesn't belong, again... Any thought to sending it directly from the seller to the person who will be doing the transfer?? Would save a shipment of the darn thing, and some expense (though not a lot of expense). (Definitely advice that wasn't solicited. I'll STFU now. )
-
I thought they were a lot closer to 80 minutes, but maybe I'm remembering my burns of "Dance With Death" and the "One For One" LP that wasn't on the Hill Mosaic. I know those both fit on one CDR.
-
Thanks, got one!!!!

I'd be curious to hear some thoughts on this too. Just the idea of something spinning around something, about a million miles an hour, and slapping up against the lense --- somehow doesn't sit right with me, so I've avoided them at all costs. But I've done nothing otherwise to clean CD lenses either. Sorta like the VCR tape-head cleaners (cleaning tapes), which I don't feel do a very good job, and may do more harm than good. I've always thought it was better to take the thing apart (VCR's, anyway), and clean them by hand with cotton swabs and alcohol. (Counting the seconds before somebody tells me that's the absolute worst way to clean the heads on a VCR. )

Thanks everybody!!! Hard to believe I'm already 36. Seems like only yesterday I was still in my 20's, and the week before that I was back in college. Thanks again!!! -
If my burns are any indication, I seem to remember they'd both fit on one CD, or are pretty damn close (maybe 15 or 20 seconds more than 80 minutes, at most). And that's based on my burns of LP's, probably without tight edits on the front and back side of each side of each LP. Who's got the exact timings of the Kenny Cox LP's handy?? No tellin' if my burns are exact, pitch/speed-wise either, so my timings could be off a bit that way too (cumulatively speaking, across four LP sides). (Plus, I have no idea where my burns for these two dates are at the moment -- and I don't want to tear up the place looking for them. )

Other than a half-dozen bootleg CD's, and the relatively recently released live "Wall" show, the only legit Floyd recordings I own, are the most recent domestic remasters of "Wish You Were Here", and "Animals". Found 'em used, and really cheap a few years ago, and couldn't resist. Something like $6 or $7 a pop, for what were then the almost brand new reissues (just looked, the versions released in 1994). Damn has it really been 10 years since those came out?? I think I found 'em cheap in '96 or so. Dark Side is such a fantastic album, BUT, I rarely listened to it all that much -- since I knew it inside and out from listening to it so much in college. Besides, when I get the urge, once every other year or so - I usually dig out one of the live versions I have (which I may do today, come to think of it). (sidetrack alert!!) I'm the same way with The Beatles material. The only Beatles CD's I own (or have ever owned ) are all three of the double-CD "Anthology" sets. Beatles music is everywhere, seemingly --- or it was 10 years ago anyway (the last time I listened to comercial radio very much. Don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles, and think they're wonderful. But they're such a part of our culture -- part of the fabric of things -- that I rarely have or had the urge to listen to them much, after a flurry of interest I had back during my high-school days (mid 80's). Did the same thing with Hendrix, after having a TON of bootlegs (almost 100 hours, if memory serves), and then selling most of them off after 6 or 8 years. Recently, though, I've been going back and buying back a fair bit of the legit Hendrix CD's that have come out over the years, especially the recent boxset with all the rare previously unreleased material, much of which I used to have on scratchy bootleg LP's. /sidetrack=off And (bringing this discussion back to Floyd), I'm the same way with them. I got DEEPLY into Floyd for several years, and then moved on to other things. Maybe in another 5 or 10 years, I'll get the Floyd bug again.

Are we witnessing the birth of a new Mosaic right here on this very board???

"Yo, Miles" - and other Electric Miles tributes

Thanks a ton for that link. Downloaded the mp3's for one of the shows late last night. Got the whole thing down in about 10 minutes (about 90-95 minutes o' music). Didnt' have a go (yet) at any of the "lossless" formats, but probably will try to figure that out sometime though -- since one of the two shows is only available that way (no mp3's), far as I can tell. -
Heard some of the new one today at a friend's house. Liked what I heard. Sounded like it was maybe a bit better than the last one. I liked the earlier one, but it fell short of what I was expecting (but I had really high expectations for it). But I probably will buy the new one sometime, though -- especially if I can borrow my friend's copy, and give it a full spin first.

Didn't know there was any piano-less Bird out there (other than the "with Strings" dates). Would love to hear them sometime. Wonder if Spontoonious has these??
