  1. Lately I've gotten in the habit of filing discs that are a tribute to a single artist/composer, at the end of that composer's section. For instance, I have a number of Miles Davis-related discs, mostly stuff like the two "Yo Miles!" discs, a big-band disc by the UMO Jazz Orchestra fronted by Tim Hagans (doing big-band versions of electric-era Miles tunes), and Mark Isham's electric-Miles tribute. All of them are filed just after the 'real' Miles Davis CD's. But I'm not totally consistent about it -- I have Joe Henderson's tribute to Miles filed with Henderson's stuff, cuz I have a lot of Henderson. I started doing this because I didn't have any other Isham, and kept forgetting the guy's name -- so it was just easier to file it with the Miles discs. I have a couple Herbie Hancock tribute discs I do the same thing with -- file them right after the Herbie CD's.
  2. Absolutely. Barber's long lost 2nd Symphony is one of my favorite classical works of the entire 20th Century. I also had the good fortune of hearing Alsop conduct the St. Louis Symphony in a performance of Barber's 2nd about 4 or 5 years ago - and it was a knock-out too.
  3. I might suggest doing the following search on the Dusty Groove web-site... "blue note small cut out hole" You'll get a number of hits for stuff they're out of stock on (and a handful for non-BN releases), but there's half a ton of BN stuff they do have in-stock, for considerably "below-list-price" prices. Edit: For instance... DVD -- One Night With Blue Note -- The Historic All-Star Reunion Concert (DVD plus highlights CD) . . . DVD . . . $11.99 List Price: $29.98 (Item: 79617)
  4. And they're currently out of stock, but doing a search on Chick Corea reveals that Dusty's been lately selling "The Complete 'IS' Sessions" for $14.99 as a cut-out. And hell's bells, they've got the following in-stock... Donald Byrd & Doug Watkins -- Transition Sessions (Byrd's Eye View/Byrd Blows On Beacon Hill/Watkins At Large) . . . CD . . . $12.99 List Price: $26.98 (Item: 62507) Blue Note, 1955/1956 (2 CD) Condition: New Copy View Cart (CD case has a small cut out hole.) Somebody better jump on that one.
  5. There's one disc of solo-piano works, with one work each by the big-three of serialism... Schoenberg, Barg, and Webern.
  6. RVG's as cut-outs???? Don't get that one.
  7. I'm a big fan of Sessions, especially his symphonies. Very heavy stuff, but well worth digging into. But, Sessions a little far out there for Naxos. (Henze is another favorite of mine, and no Henze on Naxos either.) They seem to want to stay clear of serialism, for the most part. (Not a big problem in my book -- and I'm thankful for what they do release that's obscure, even if they won't touch the "hard" stuff. )
  8. Noticed cut-outs of Andrew Hill's "Passing Ships" on eBay this week, and also at Dusty Groove (perhaps multiple cut-out copies in stock??). Dusty's price was only $9.99. I know this isn't OOP yet (nor the other Conn's released in Oct. 2003), but are we already getting close??? Is BN really cutting these things out that quickly????
  9. Picked up Ned Rorem's three symphonies on Naxos tonight, just recorded last year, all three written back in the 50's. Don't know much Rorem, though I heard the world premier of his cello concerto here in KC a couple years ago - and rather enjoyed it. Seems like Rorem is a guy who I've read about over the years (lots of little bits here and there), more than I've ever heard much of his music. (Just noticed that this Naxos CD is the first recordings of his Symphs #1 & #2, so that might explain why I haven't heard much Rorem.) Also picked the Naxos recording of Claude Bolling's suites for flute and jazz piano, performed by an all Italian group. Not familiar with Bolling at all either, so this is a new one for me too. Looking forward to both...
  10. Mike Metheny Whew!!! I was beginning to think that I wouldn't come up with any without cheating. He's Pat's older brother. More a local musician (here in KC) by any measure, but he did record two leader dates for Impulse!/MCA in the mid 80's.
  11. Assuming you're talking about March 6, 1970... Let the Fillmore East versions play a bit. The "tunes" you're looking for don't appear right at the very beginning of each track. For the version of Directions on disc #1 --- the familiar Directions "bassline" theme starts at 1:06, with the main unison trumpet/sax theme appearing at 1:30. For the version on disc #2 --- I don't think I heard any of the familiar Directions "bassline" theme (though I did hear one or maybe two other vaguely familiar patterns that I don't usually associate with Directions), but, the main "Directions" unison trumpet/sax theme does appear prominently at 2:26. (I didn't let each version play completely through, but I did click around within the last couple minutes of each track) - and I didn't hear any restatement of any of the "Directions" themes. My memory is that most (maybe all?) of the live versions of "Directions" that I know, only give you the "familiar" goods near the beginning. Thank god Miles (and others) found interesting ways to get away from the "head, solo, solo, solo, head" formula.
  12. Wondering if there's an interesting story here?? (But very understanding if it can't be told in a public setting.) Thanks!!
  13. Yes, welcome!!!
  14. Is this being put on with the blessing of the Ra estate?? Who controls Ra's name and likeness?? And if it is being put on with the permission of his estate, why then is there none of Ra's original music?? Jury's still out on this one, at least in my book. Then again, maybe they don't need Ra's estate to sign off on this. I mean, wasn't was a movie a year or two on USA, maybe TNN, that was a bioepic about Hendrix. None of Jimi's original music was used, but his likeness and name sure were.
  15. That looks pretty much just like the wood paneling in my parents' basement, in the same house the belonged to my grandparents originally (the house my Dad grew up in, and still lives in to this day, at the age of 79). I just called him, and he said the basement was redone in 1954 (I thought that kind of paneling was popular in the 50's), so I don't think we're necessarily looking at "wood construction" that particulalry implies The South. Could be anywhere.
  16. Seriously, what section do you people file your Karen Mantler CD's in??
  17. Maybe we can find a willing trombonist, and take out a 'hit' on somebody -- and see if it works!!! Would that be a considered a trombotomy??
  18. Or like in Europe (or at least from what I've personally seen in stores in France and Spain)... Everything is sorted by first name, or group name. Of course that means that 99% of things aren't anywhere even close to where you're normally used to finding them... ...but at least Jethro Tull is filed correctly, for a change.
  19. Oh wait, I get it, it's always the same guy. You're off the hook, FFA.
  20. Hey Free For All, how many have you killed over the years??? Is this really all that common??
  21. One of the best covers I've yet heard of this Ornette tune (or any Ornette tune, for that matter).
  22. Definitely Sun Ra goes in the SSS's. (Or at least in my world.) Now record stores, Sun Ra always seems to go in the RRR's, which is understandable. Where does the Jazz Record Mart have Ra filed??? (If anybody has him under the RRR's, it'd probably be them.) Funny, I'm quite comfortable referring to him as "Ra", but I know he shouldn't go in the RRR's for filing purposes. I know from interviews I've heard, that most of the people who knew him referred to him as "SunRa", said as if it were one word - usually with the accent on the "Sun", as in "SUNra"
  23. I could have said damn near the exact same thing. If fact, I will... ...seriously... I've still got "Q&A" and "Song X", and I just never got around to picking up the live trio disc (though I'm sure I'd like it). But everything else I've heard from the man leaves me pretty cold too, especially the PMG stuff. (Sorry) And just like PhillyQ, I went to a live show of his (here at the Kansas City Blues and Jazz Fest, circa 1995 or maybe 1996), and I left after about two or three tunes. He's clearly got chops a mile wide -- and sometimes (like on "Q&A"), they're a mile "deep" too (what he says with them). But on most of the things I've heard from Metheny, they're a mile wide, and maybe a couple feet "deep" -- at least to my ears. (Again, sorry. I know lots here are big fans.) But I love "Q&A" and when I'm in the right mood, "Song X" too.
  24. My bigger problem, filing-wise, is where to put Karen Mantler's CD's??? They're not exactly jazz (though they're absolutely not exactly not jazz either). I could file them with my pop/rock/alternative stuff -- but they stick out like a sore thumb there too. What to do??? Edit: Right now they're at the end of my pop/rock/alternative CD's, after all the various artists CD's, and soundtracks. I've got one other CD in this "I don't know where to file it" section... Praxis - "Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis)". Is it Rock?? Is it Funk?? Is it Metal?? Is it Jazz?? Problem is it's all of those things, and more!!!
  25. ashes to ashes, dust to dust...
