  1. That's one of the best little-discussed Braxton albums out there. It didn't get a wide release. I think Arista cut the corners off about a minute after they put the shrink wrap on. Arista also "forgot" to include Braxton's liner notes when it was released. I was lucky to find a copy a few years ago. Ursula Oppens and Frederic Rzewski are a dream team for this kind of music. I really like the use of zither and melodica on 95.
  2. Art Taylor showed up on a Frank Wright-Noah Howard album. Dave Brubeck with Anthony Braxton and Roy Haynes. Pee Wee Russell and Thelonious Monk at Newport.
  3. I believe this is the one we were discussing in the thread about Seven Pieces. It's basically a raid on the Giuffre Mosaic (the recordings featuring Hall), plus some Verve albums (The Easy Way, etc.) and other odds and ends.
  4. Thanks for posting. Who else is in the band?
  5. Believe me, you wouldn't. "Friends" would be a good one to cover. "Dazed and Confused" would be interesting too. Trivia: "Dazed and Confused" was actually written by Jake Holmes and stolen by Jimmy Page.
  6. I have nice LP copies of both and though it's been a while, I remember thinking they were nice records, charmingly ragged. I agree. "Charmingly ragged" is an apt description, but lots of good moments. I really dig La Roca's drumming.
  7. I like this album cover, which gives the impression that the music therein is pretty intense, which in fact it is! I'm not sure what you mean by 'poorly composed'. Do you mean the album cover or the music? Cover. There's half a bass and a severed arm growing out of Coltrane's back. But I've always loved the cover of Way Out West.
  8. Coltrane's Meditations is out of focus and poorly composed.
  9. Fe-Mail, a Norwegian noise duo. Loudest jazz concert I attended was OrkestRova.
  10. It's a raid on the Mosaic box selections that include Hall, plus Seven Pieces, the Easy Way and a few other odds and ends.
  11. New on Leo: Anthony Braxton Quartet ( Moscow ) 2008 Composition 367b http://www.leorecords.com/?m=select&id=CD_LR_518 "Performed in Moscow on June 29, 2008 with Anthony Braxton on sopranino, soprano, alto saxophone and contrabass clarinet, Taylor Ho Bynum on cornet, flugelhorn, piccolo and bass trumpets, Mary Halvorson on electric guitar and Katherine Young on bassoon, to the ecstatic Russian audience, this is one of the best Mr. Braxton¹s performances ever both in terms of music and quality of recording. If it doesn¹t become an all-time classic I shall swallow my tongue."
  12. A fantastic album. My favourite of the solo sax albums. I recall reading somewhere the engineer was being a real dick during the recording.
  13. I've never warmed to Blackstone Legacy -- should be better on paper, but I find it too unfocused. I love Song of Songs though. One of my favourite Woody recordings.
  14. Trafic is now out on Criterion.
  15. And sure enough, they have. Or maybe it was the Andorians. saw in HMV. It has the original cover. I believe the label was called Jazzbeat. Another concert is tacked on (I think it's the one that has been released as Princess). That live quartet recording on Verve from 1960 is also out, possibly on the same label. The earlier trio concert from the Europe 1 recording is tacked on. Glad someone is releasing it, but would be nice to see a proper reissue.

    Miles

Miles came to town in 1986. I was tempted to see him, but I remember his Saturday Night Live performance from a few years previous and thinking, 'Man, this ain't Bitches Brew,' so I passed. That night, someone thought it would be a good idea to throw Wynton Marsalis on stage while Miles was playing. Miles wasn't too pleased and sent Wynton packing. Wish I'd seen that. Miles was a fascinating musician from start to Pangaea (and had some nice bands mid-1980s, too). It always amazes me to contrast Dark Magus with his Carnegie Hall concert from the decade before.
  17. Lonehill is bad. The company often pirates releases with misleading (as in the far from "Complete" Ayler Slugs CD) or erroneous info (claims that Lalo Schifrin is playing on a Eric Dolphy live date actually recorded halfway across the globe from where it was claimed to be). JSP has released some great John Davies remasterings of Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton, among others. But did I once read about a shady side to the label on this board once?
  18. Grossman plays some nice tenor on the Fillmore East gig with Miles. Too bad it was all cut out of the resulting live album. I wish those concerts would be issued in full.
  19. Chambers appears on "The Ghetto Walk" and "Early Minor." As Bertrand noted, "The Ghetto Walk" is credited to Miles Davis. Chambers covered "Early Minor," a Zawinul composition, on his The Almoravid album.
  20. Lancaster was a great character. I fondly remember him as a broadcaster and have childhood memories of him as a QB. RIP. Another huge loss to the league.
  21. Hello to the Wind is on Now by Hutcherson and a Woody Shaw live album.
  22. Ben Young and Carlos Kase`s gigography list an Ayler date at the Diplomat Hotel in 1968, but nothing for 1970. The scheduled performers (uncomfirmed) listed for the `68 gig were Ayler, Don Ayler, Mary Maria, John or Paul Smith, Milford Graves (second show only) and a batch of singers. No recording is indicated.
  23. Sad news. RIP. He was a composer who brought a lot of humour to his pieces. You can hear how his bird calls piece and radio pieces influenced John Zorn. He was still in his prime--Winter & Winter has been releasing a good selection of his work in recent years. Sad to see him go. My favourites are Acustica and the compass pieces.
  24. For Four Orchestras is by no means awful. It was played slower than it should of. I'm not a native English speaker, but I take it you mean "should have". If not, I don't quite understand what you're saying. I should have said that.
  25. For Four Orchestras is by no means awful. It was played slower than it should have. I have Creative Orchestra Music on CD. It's a good one. I'm thinking of listing it on eBay for $136.
