Some more new releases: Creative Orchestra (Guelph) 2007 on Spool, Quartet (Moscow) 2008 on Leo and now Toronto (Duets) 2007 with Kyle Brenders on Barnyard. And while the big news has been the release of the Mosaic box, 2008 has also seen Beyond Quantum on Tzadik, Nine Compositions (DVD) 2003, Quartet (GTM) 2006 on Important, Four Improvisations (Duo) 2007 with Joe Morris and the 9-CD Piano Music (1968-2000) box featuring Genevieve Foccroulle. Of the new stuff, I’ve only heard the Moscow set, a Diamond Curtain Wall date with Braxton on reeds and laptop, Taylor Ho Bynum on brass, Mary Halvorson on guitar and Katherine Young on bassoon. Fantastic stuff, rivalling Quartet (GTM) 2006 for my favourite Braxton release of 2008. Young has an interesting bassoon sound—it sounds like an arco bass at times. Of the Diamond Curtain Wall releases, I’ve only heard this and the Ulrichsberg date on Leo. How is the Victo and the other Leo?

If you have even the slightest interest in Don Ellis, then Live in Monterey is essential. Great solos and a lot of excitement. The other live one is so-so. Jacknife has some nice playing, but a couple of the compositions are weak. Buy it if you are a Tolliver fan or a McLean completist. Stan Kenton’s City of Glass is overstuffed in parts, but the arrangements are brilliant. It’s something you’d really want if it was out-of-print. Larry Young’s Mother Ship is disappointing compared to Unity but it has a kind of out there appeal. Sam Rivers’ Fuchsia Swing Song is a must have! Also have a fondness for Hutcherson’s Now!

A & B downtown is now gone. The "Albion" you refer to on Main is actually Adagio. You describe the atmosphere in there brilliantly. It and another Main St. shop, Red Cat Records, have really expanded their vinyl selection. Sikora's and Scrape (metal) seem to be thriving; the rest are surviving. HMV has lowered its prices to the extent that buying there now seems like a business transaction as opposed to being robbed. Vancouver is not known for its clubs unless you like big screen TVs and vomiting low-brows. The Cellar on Broadway is a nice jazz place, however. Harold Mabern plays there every year or so.

Cod 'n chips twice, please.
B. Clugston replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
There's a fish and chips place in Bellingham, WA. though I've never tried it. There's fish and chips spots all over Canada, with cod and halibut the favourites. Some places also serve salmon. -
Happy Birthday GA Russell!

Happy Birthday to the board's No. 1 CFL fan! -
Roscoe has a bass saxophone. You are likely referring to the solo concerts album on Sackville. The contrabass is bigger.
-
Sad news. Hope things go better for him.

There's a few 'great moments in contrabass saxophone history' on the Braxton Mosaic set, in particular in the Berlin concert and a duet with Abrams. My favourite Braxton contrabass solo is from the duo album with Roscoe Mitchell on Sackville. Braxton plays contrabass and Mitchell plays his bass sax on a rumbling march.

Anyone have trouble with orders from Jazz Loft?
B. Clugston replied to peterintoronto's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I order from Jazz Loft a lot as it's just down the I-5. I've always found Jazz Loft is good to deal with. -
That's one of the best little-discussed Braxton albums out there. It didn't get a wide release. I think Arista cut the corners off about a minute after they put the shrink wrap on. Arista also "forgot" to include Braxton's liner notes when it was released. I was lucky to find a copy a few years ago. Ursula Oppens and Frederic Rzewski are a dream team for this kind of music. I really like the use of zither and melodica on 95.

Art Taylor showed up on a Frank Wright-Noah Howard album. Dave Brubeck with Anthony Braxton and Roy Haynes. Pee Wee Russell and Thelonious Monk at Newport.

I believe this is the one we were discussing in the thread about Seven Pieces. It's basically a raid on the Giuffre Mosaic (the recordings featuring Hall), plus some Verve albums (The Easy Way, etc.) and other odds and ends.

Thanks for posting. Who else is in the band?

Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
B. Clugston replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
I have nice LP copies of both and though it's been a while, I remember thinking they were nice records, charmingly ragged. I agree. "Charmingly ragged" is an apt description, but lots of good moments. I really dig La Roca's drumming. -
I like this album cover, which gives the impression that the music therein is pretty intense, which in fact it is! I'm not sure what you mean by 'poorly composed'. Do you mean the album cover or the music? Cover. There's half a bass and a severed arm growing out of Coltrane's back. But I've always loved the cover of Way Out West.

What was the L O U D E S T concert you ever attended?
B. Clugston replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Fe-Mail, a Norwegian noise duo. Loudest jazz concert I attended was OrkestRova. -

New on Leo: Anthony Braxton Quartet ( Moscow ) 2008 Composition 367b http://www.leorecords.com/?m=select&id=CD_LR_518 "Performed in Moscow on June 29, 2008 with Anthony Braxton on sopranino, soprano, alto saxophone and contrabass clarinet, Taylor Ho Bynum on cornet, flugelhorn, piccolo and bass trumpets, Mary Halvorson on electric guitar and Katherine Young on bassoon, to the ecstatic Russian audience, this is one of the best Mr. Braxton¹s performances ever both in terms of music and quality of recording. If it doesn¹t become an all-time classic I shall swallow my tongue."

A fantastic album. My favourite of the solo sax albums. I recall reading somewhere the engineer was being a real dick during the recording.
