  1. I stumbled upon Bud's while wandering around Pioneer Square during a visit to Seattle a couple of years ago and spent an enjoyable couple of hours among the vinyl. Bud (if that was who was behind the counter) seemed kind of ornery until he saw my selections - he warmed up then. I went back this past winter - finding it shuttered was a blow. My godchild (insert George Wallington melody here) now lives in Seattle, so I'll be visiting frequently, and I'll check out Wall of Sound. Bud sold the store in 2001, but retained an interest in it. It was a great place. I managed one last visit last year and bought a Lucky Thompson CD and heard a story about how Lucky turned up one day at Bud's.
  2. Ordered this today. Sounds good. http://www.numerogroup.com/catalog_detail.php?uid=01049# Light: On The South Side $60.00 (BOOK+2LP) Between 1975-1977 Chicago's South Side night clubs were a little lighter. Not just because of a lanky white guy skulking about, but rather because of the camera and strobe light he carried. Michael Abramson hit Perv's House, Pepper's Hideout, The High Chaparral, The Patio Lounge, and The Showcase Lounge, not to capture the artists on stage, instead popping off a half dozen rolls every night on the crowd. Light: On The South Side gathers for the first time over 100 of these images, as Numero shines its own strobe on yet another dark corner of the past. The 132-page hard back book features photos, an ephemera section, and an essay by Nick Hornby. Housed in a gorgeous slipcase with the 12X12 book is Pepper's Jukebox, a seventeen track compilation of the kind of funky Chicago blues heard from the stage and the Wurlitizer. The deluxe 2LP set is packaged in a sharp gatefold jacket with two inner sleeves crammed to the gills with label scans and stories. All in all, it's the classiest Numero record ever made, spotted easily from across the room with it's near 2" spine.
  3. Very, very good point here, Chuck. David Baker too... Thanks for mentioning Baker. Always enjoyed his playing. Al Kiger too.
  4. Great label. The two Cult Cargo releases feature some great, funky music from Grand Bahamas and Belize, respectively and are highly recommended.
  5. I only have the old muddy 2 CD Japanese version to compare to. He Loved Him Madly, in particular, and Calypso Frelimo sound better on the box set, but it's not a drastic improvement. Calypso Frelimo has always sounded partially submerged and I don't think any amount of remastering can fix that.
  6. They did exist. I remember once seeing a reel to reel of one of Jimmy Giuffre's Verve records. Seem to recall they were still around in the 1970s though I never saw any in stores.
  7. RIP. At the Five Spot is my favourite George Russell album.
  8. To answer my own question, get the 2-CD. I got the one CD. Although it sounds great (unless you are Hoffman forum member), it doesn't have all the restored versions of the songs featuring Gram Parsons' lead vocals.
  9. Is the "enhanced" 2 CD Sweetheart of the Rodeo worth getting or is the original 1997 reissue just fine.
  10. Haven't heard it in years, but I recall Wolter Wierbos' solo trombone album X Caliber as being pretty great. George Lewis' solo album on Sackville is a keeper too. Sergei Kuryokhin's Popular Zoological Elements.
  11. Steve Lacy, Hooky Ned Rothenberg, Trials of the Argo Anthony Braxton, Saxophone Improvisations Series F Anthony Braxton, Solo: Live at Moers Festival Anthony Braxton, Solo (NYC) 2002 Evan Parker, Monoceros Derek Bailey, LACE Derek Bailey, Aida
  12. John Zorn's Electric Masada can have a similar vibe to Miles' 1970 band (with Corea). I really like the Yo Miles Up River release (with a nice cameo from David Creamer, who played on On the Corner). The first Yo Miles disc was OK, but I much prefer the real thing. Heard live, Miles 1973-75 bands were endlessly fascinating. I wish more concerts would find there way into legitimate release.
  13. I don't know, BClug. What do you think? My guess is that nobody wants him because he has the reputation of not getting along with his teammates. However, you can be sure that the Bombers would have preferred to start him over Ryan Dinwiddie in the Grey Cup! So my thinking is that the first team that has a big injury problem at the QB position (except Hamilton) will sign him if he agrees to a low price. If he holds out for big money, I don't think he will catch on with anybody. Buono has (obliquely) said the Lions would be interested if there's major QB injuries because Printers is familiar with the Lions system.
  14. GA—where (and when) do you think Casey Printers will wind up?
  15. Go for the classic Kammerkonzert / Ramifications / Lux Aeterna / Atmosphères on Wergo. http://www.wergo.de/shop/en_UK/products/show,93472.html It features two of the pieces that Kubrick lifted for 2001. Beyond that, you really can't lose with any of the Teldecs and most of the Wergos.
  16. Agreed. Kenny Dorham is the first name that came to my mind. Also, Freddie Hubbard wasn't quite as under-recognized, but he wrote some stunning compositions during the Blue Note days.
  17. RIP.
  18. I use sugar spiked with a little bit of borax for carpenter ants. Not sure if that'll get fire ants.
  19. Can't believe it took over 30 minutes for a Keith Jarrett comparison.
  20. Priester shows up on the new album by drone dudes SUNN O))) called Monoliths & Dimensions http://www.southernlord.com/index2.php
  21. Guess who is playing in my town on Jan. 29th and 31st?! http://www.restructures.net/ABcalendar.htm "2010: Fri, Jan-29 Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver, CANADA Anthony Braxton 12+1tet [AB (reeds), Taylor Ho Bynum (cor), Jessica Pavone (vla), Jay Rozen (tba), Carl Testa (b), Aaron Siegel (perc), Mary Halvorson (g), Steve Lehman (reeds), James Fei (reeds), Andrew Raffo Dewar (reeds), Reut Regev (tb), Sara Schoenbeck (bsn), Nicole Mitchell (fl)] Sun, Jan-31 Roundhouse Festival Hall, Vancouver, CANADA Anthony Braxton Sonic Genome Project " Looks like AB will be here as part of the Vancouver Cultural Olympiad. I'm so excited!
  22. I was looking to putting in an order to www.stockhausen.org despite all the obstacles to ordering. Gruppen/Carre is top of my list. If those familiar with Stockhausen had to by one other, what would it be?
  23. I'm a big fan of Lift Every Voice. "Hey Hey" is a great opener. I find a lot of people criticize this one and Grass Roots for not meeting their expectations of how such sessions should sound. That's not the point with Andrew Hill.
  24. My True Blue has the correct liner notes.
