Lancaster was a great character. I fondly remember him as a broadcaster and have childhood memories of him as a QB. RIP. Another huge loss to the league.

Hello to the Wind is on Now by Hutcherson and a Woody Shaw live album.

Ben Young and Carlos Kase`s gigography list an Ayler date at the Diplomat Hotel in 1968, but nothing for 1970. The scheduled performers (uncomfirmed) listed for the `68 gig were Ayler, Don Ayler, Mary Maria, John or Paul Smith, Milford Graves (second show only) and a batch of singers. No recording is indicated.

Sad news. RIP. He was a composer who brought a lot of humour to his pieces. You can hear how his bird calls piece and radio pieces influenced John Zorn. He was still in his prime--Winter & Winter has been releasing a good selection of his work in recent years. Sad to see him go. My favourites are Acustica and the compass pieces.

Good ol' Don Matthews. That's hilarious.

While Butman is known as a play-it-straight saxophonist, Sergei Kuryokhin used to rope him in to some of his projects (ie. Subway Culture, Insect Culture).

One of my favourites. Earlier van Vogt is inventive and nutty, kind of like of Chewy post. The later books are unintelligible and lose the fun. Meanwhile, I'm reading Emma by Jane Austen, which is fabulous.

Obscure movies that you remember from your youth

Jack and the Witch, a dubbed Japanese animated film with some surreal touches. The German Lesson, an excellent German mini-series based on Siegfried Lenz' book. The Lathe of Heaven, which PBS thankfully resuscitated a few years back. (The remake was shite.) And another vote for Beneath the Planet of the Apes. I was spellbound watching that as a young fella' in my aunt's poolside cabana. Watching it as an adult, it doesn't hold up well and the church service scene is almost laughable. -
Welcome back GA! Matt Dunigan was on TSN today saying that the Argos clearly need to go in a different direction and essentially saying Stubler should have been fired last week. He also said Casey Printers is playing too much like an NFL quarterback and wonders why it's taken Printers so long to realize this.

Forgot to mention that the Argos beat the Ti-Cats 34-31 on Labour Day. Also, Dave Dickenson's career looks to be over. He's out with post-concussion syndrome. I would love to see him become a coach. He's a bright guy, very analytical, and never afraid to tell it like it is.

How Many of Us Consider Ourselves to Be "Audiophiles?"

I have a 30-year-old turntable and an amp that distorts on one channel. I guess I shouldn't go anywhere near the Hoffman forum. -

The stout is indeed a good one. -
The Woody Shaw comment dates back to the 2nd edition (and possibly the 1st, which I don't have). I've always been baffled by it. How does recording a bunch of stellar albums for Muse and then getting picked up by a major label show clouded career judgment? I used to love the Penguin guide and discovered a lot of European and Russian jazz because of it, but have become aggravated by slopping editing (references to CDs they dropped several editions ago) and misleading reviews (they make Mingus at Carnegie Hall sound like a Sibelius symphony and not the jam session that it is). The clincher was when they began listing a fictitious Braxton CD (due to garbled info on the AMG site) yet review the thing as if they have listened to it. The guide needs a really heavy editing.

Ricky Ray threw three touchdown passes, including a pair to Fred Stamps, to lead the Edmonton Eskimos to a 37-16 win over the Calgary Stampeders in Monday's annual Labour Day Classic game. A.J. Harris had a rushing touchdown for the Eskimos, who improved to 6-3 and second place in the West Division. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=248240&...s=topStory_main

Is the HatHut CD reissue of the double LP Non Troppo edited? If so, how much music was omitted on the reissue?

Maybe Hoffman will next "discover" an alternate take of "Totem Pole."

tsn.ca says: Hamilton Ticats quarterback Casey Printers might not be starting against the Toronto Argonauts in their annual Labour Day clash after all. According to the Hamilton Spectator, Printers reported to practice after the bye week on Monday and still had issues with the thumb on his throwing hand.
