Me too. They are in my 'Top 5 RVG these, please' list.

Looking forward to seeing Slava Ganelin in concert in the spring. Have some Mosaics to get, some Blue Notes to grab before they are gone and hope there are a few Nessa reissues.

Or maybe this is similar to Hoffman's "discovery" of the "lost" Sidewinder tape. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...mp;#entry825173

Ben Cahoon is back with the Als. He can run, catch and kick game winning field goals. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=259784&...=headlines_main

He wasn't signed 24 hours and he was already studying the Riders playbook. He's pretty determined to show that Buono made a boo-boo.

They are good for what they are. From what I’ve heard of the new album, it could have used more Rolaids than Eno, but their previous two albums were good for those who like such music and tolerable for those who don’t. When my wife plays Coldplay, I think “thank god it’s not Dido” just as she prefers “The Sidewinder” over “Machine Gun.” This case will likely get settled out of court. Seems to be closer to a “I Wan’t a New Drug” v. “Ghostbusters” kind of a case rather than a “He’s So Fine” v. “He’s So Fine My Sweet Lord” type of case. Funnily, there’s something familiar about the other single off the new Coldplay album, but I can’t put my finger on it.

What do folks think about Jackie McLean's Vertigo?

Roberts was not a big surprise, but cutting lose Clermont is unfortunate. A colleague of mine mentioned how Clermont is like a running back in that he can take add a couple of yards to his short yardage receptions by dragging tacklers along with him. Since he's a realtor in Regina in the off-season, he'd be a natural fit for the Riders.

Thanks for posting. A great talent who doesn't get mentioned enough, but should never be forgotten. Now playing: "Blue Spring."

That's a mid-1980s reissue of half of the tracks that appeared on The Complete Braxton 1971.

Some more new releases: Creative Orchestra (Guelph) 2007 on Spool, Quartet (Moscow) 2008 on Leo and now Toronto (Duets) 2007 with Kyle Brenders on Barnyard. And while the big news has been the release of the Mosaic box, 2008 has also seen Beyond Quantum on Tzadik, Nine Compositions (DVD) 2003, Quartet (GTM) 2006 on Important, Four Improvisations (Duo) 2007 with Joe Morris and the 9-CD Piano Music (1968-2000) box featuring Genevieve Foccroulle. Of the new stuff, I’ve only heard the Moscow set, a Diamond Curtain Wall date with Braxton on reeds and laptop, Taylor Ho Bynum on brass, Mary Halvorson on guitar and Katherine Young on bassoon. Fantastic stuff, rivalling Quartet (GTM) 2006 for my favourite Braxton release of 2008. Young has an interesting bassoon sound—it sounds like an arco bass at times. Of the Diamond Curtain Wall releases, I’ve only heard this and the Ulrichsberg date on Leo. How is the Victo and the other Leo?

If you have even the slightest interest in Don Ellis, then Live in Monterey is essential. Great solos and a lot of excitement. The other live one is so-so. Jacknife has some nice playing, but a couple of the compositions are weak. Buy it if you are a Tolliver fan or a McLean completist. Stan Kenton’s City of Glass is overstuffed in parts, but the arrangements are brilliant. It’s something you’d really want if it was out-of-print. Larry Young’s Mother Ship is disappointing compared to Unity but it has a kind of out there appeal. Sam Rivers’ Fuchsia Swing Song is a must have! Also have a fondness for Hutcherson’s Now!

A & B downtown is now gone. The "Albion" you refer to on Main is actually Adagio. You describe the atmosphere in there brilliantly. It and another Main St. shop, Red Cat Records, have really expanded their vinyl selection. Sikora's and Scrape (metal) seem to be thriving; the rest are surviving. HMV has lowered its prices to the extent that buying there now seems like a business transaction as opposed to being robbed. Vancouver is not known for its clubs unless you like big screen TVs and vomiting low-brows. The Cellar on Broadway is a nice jazz place, however. Harold Mabern plays there every year or so.

Cod 'n chips twice, please.
B. Clugston replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
There's a fish and chips place in Bellingham, WA. though I've never tried it. There's fish and chips spots all over Canada, with cod and halibut the favourites. Some places also serve salmon. -
Happy Birthday GA Russell!

Happy Birthday to the board's No. 1 CFL fan! -
Roscoe has a bass saxophone. You are likely referring to the solo concerts album on Sackville. The contrabass is bigger.
-
Sad news. Hope things go better for him.
-
There's a few 'great moments in contrabass saxophone history' on the Braxton Mosaic set, in particular in the Berlin concert and a duet with Abrams. My favourite Braxton contrabass solo is from the duo album with Roscoe Mitchell on Sackville. Braxton plays contrabass and Mitchell plays his bass sax on a rumbling march.

Anyone have trouble with orders from Jazz Loft?
B. Clugston replied to peterintoronto's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I order from Jazz Loft a lot as it's just down the I-5. I've always found Jazz Loft is good to deal with.
