And Misha was lacking that night so he had to play bass?
-
Maids of Spain are fine with me ... the first box had plenty of omissions, but it's nevertheless a nice way to have lots of this music grouped in one place. Will look for this one, too! Just to be clear: first, second box ... and then the expanded version comprising both on 13 discs? The new should contain these (info compiled from Losin): Café Bohemia, New York NY Mutual Network radio broadcasts (B) May 3, 1958 (4 items; TT = 11:11) Miles Davis (tpt); John Coltrane (ts); William "Red" Garland (p); Paul Chambers (b); Philly Joe Jones (d); Guy Wallace (ann) 1 Band warming up 0:04 2 Woody 'n' You (D. Gillespie) 2:47 3 In Your Own Sweet Way (D. Brubeck) 3:49 4 A Night in Tunisia (incomplete) (D. Gillespie-F. Paparelli) 4:31 May 17, 1958 (5 items; TT = 19:54) same, Bill Evans (p) for Garland 1 Introduction (Guy Wallace) 0:13 2 Four (M. Davis) 4:48 3 Bye Bye Blackbird (R. Henderson-M. Dixon) 6:49 4 Walkin' (R. Carpenter) 6:28 5 Two Bass Hit (J. Lewis-D. Gillespie) 1:36 Spotlite Lounge, Washington DC Mutual Network radio broadcasts (C+) August 9, 1958 (3 items; TT = 18:37) Miles Davis (tpt); Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (as); John Coltrane (ts); Bill Evans (p); Paul Chambers (b); Jimmy Cobb (d) 1 Walkin' (R. Carpenter) 6:41 2 All of You (C. Porter) 6:46 3 'Round Midnight (B. Hanighen-C. Williams-T. Monk) 5:10 November 1, 1958 (6 items; TT = 19:19) same, Red Garland (p) for Evans; Steve Hamber (ann); Guy Wallace (ann) 1 Introduction 0:05 2 Sid's Ahead [Weirdo] (M. Davis) 8:32 3 Introduction 0:31 4 Bye Bye Blackbird (R. Henderson-M. Dixon) 6:19 5 Introduction 0:24 6 Straight, No Chaser (incomplete) (T. Monk) 3:28 Birdland, New York NY Mutual Network radio broadcast (B) January 3, 1959 (3 items; TT = 19:41) same, Wynton Kelly (p) for Garland; Guy Wallace (ann) 1 Introduction (Guy Wallace) 0:10 2 Bags' Groove (M. Jackson) 14:13 3 All of You (incomplete) (C. Porter) 5:18 Chicago Stadium, Chicago IL AFRS radio broadcast (C+) August 7, 1959 (2 items; TT = 12:41) Miles Davis (tpt); Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (as); Wynton Kelly (p); Paul Chambers (b); Jimmy Cobb (d) 1 Introduction 1:07 2 So What (M. Davis) 11:34 Birdland, New York NY AFRS radio broadcast (B) August 25, 1959 (4 items; TT = 22:01) same, add John Coltrane (ts); Ray Barrett (ann) 1 The Theme (with voiceover) (M. Davis) 0:43 2 Announcement 0:523 So What (M. Davis) 12:05 4 The Theme (incomplete) (M. Davis) 8:21 It might, on top of that, also contain the TV show again: http://www.plosin.com/milesAhead/Sessions.aspx?s=590402 Not sure what 1960 means, but likely some stuff from Europe will be included? Paris - March 21 - (semi?) officially released on RTE/Trema Stockholm - March 22 - officially released on Dragon Copenhagen - March 24 - plentily booted Düsseldorf - March 28 - TV filming studio gig without Miles, (semi?) officially on WDR Jazzline (under Coltrane's name) Frankfurt - March 30 - booted Munich - April 3 - booted Zürich - April 8 - booted (I think) by Storyville Scheveningen - April 9 - booted aplenty (one track officially in the big useless KoB box) Then, still 1960, the fall tour with Sonny Stitt: Manchester - September 27 Paris - October 11 Stockholm - October 13 Paris and Stockholm are also out on Trema and Dragon, respectively, Manchester has been released by the Spanish. Not sure what this new box will contain, it would be huge if it were complete. And as all these boots, it will be marred by wrong speed/pitch issues abound, I'm afraid.

Are there any box bargains currently available?
king ubu replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Saw the new Coltrane in a store today - way to thin to contain jewel cases ... guess they go the mini-LP route for larger sets or they've just changed somewhere along the way. Does the Miles contain a booklet with anything other than line-ups, tracklist and all the usual information? -
Very sorry to hear this.
-
Well, it IS great! Both CD and LP can also be obtained straight from the label: http://www.boweavilrecordings.com/Weavil_24.html I did get carried away similarly and bought the LP via some vendor, assuming the CD was OOP ... then after some more searching I saw that the label is selling both and was pissed for a second. But now I'm happy I went for the LP, in this particular case!
-
I re-bought the old CD just to have those edits as well ... but the unedited version has grown to be much more familiar over the years.

final instalment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mhLQipXIEI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlIhCRQA3Zg Sunday Walk Dig o Dag (1979, Flavio & Franco w/Gruntz, Guy Pedersen & Humair)

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
king ubu replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Intriguing discussion about Weather Report and Zawinul above! Follow-up question to Jim: can you please specify which Zawinul Syndicate set you meant? The only one I've got so far is this one: -
more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifYRDVoaJcE Skylark (1979, Flavio & Franco, large orchestra, polished by Sebesky) Franco Cerri - Flavio's Blues / Just One of Those Things (from "Franco Cerri and His European All Stars", w/Flavio, Lars Gullin, Gruntz & Pierre Favre, Cerri's on bass here)

Very sad news, read it in the daily paper this morning. Had a track of his on my first BFT, years ago ... enjoyed what little I've heard! Some tracks from youtube: Kenny Clarke - No Details (ca. 60s, w/Franco, Gruntz, Isla Eckinger) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q91BqIWVcgI Strike Up the Band (1955 w/Franco Cerri, Siro Bianchi, Rodolfo Bonetto)

Are you sure about the mini LP packing of the single discs? I've only got one of these (the Rollins Prestige) and is has the discs (eight of them, the albums - the box is not identical in content to the earlier complete 7CD set, missing several sideman sessions/albums) in two jumbo jewel cases, each holding four discs. The others I've seen in stores (Ellington Carnegie, Chet Baker Riverside, Coltrane Prestige) looked the same to me. -

It took me two hours to get that one darn Getz chorus written down (from the CD, so no slowing down). That part where he goes way up, hitting about the hightest notes possible on the tenor, and some some quick flurry of notes, I never got that down ... but even for a lacking amateur like me, it was a good exercice! -
As I am a huge supporter of Mosaic, I was NOT holding it against them. I've had this discussion many times with Scott. The legal difficulties involved in a such a scenario make doing this almost impossible, especially in this day and age. This could change (or become even more difficult) if UMG (owner of Decca) becomes the owner of EMI (owner of Blue Note, which as I understand it, is part owner of Mosaic itself). It's a shame really that Mosaic does not have at its disposal the legal team necessary to resolve such issues for the good of the music. But then again, it's rarely about the music with large record companies these days. Okay, we're on the same page then ... as for UMG swallowing EMI (which, as far as I know, owns 50% of Mosaic), that might be the very end, as UMG has it's own boutique outlet with Hip-O-Select. If their jazz arm would be merged with Mosaic, that might indeed turn out fine. I assume Hip-O getting more active in jazz was the reason why Mosaic couldn't/wouldn't do any more Universal/Verve boxes (remember that the Granz Jam Sessions set was once planned to be a Mosaic?). Anyway, rather than buying Mosaic, UMG should bring out a fifties JATP box set!

Great photos! I guess me, I've long been inhabited by the jazz devil - but no one will ever mistake me for a German submarine officer, I'm quite sure

Well, we really needn't go into detail, but sometimes it was very hard back then to draw a line between extreme conservatism and nazism, wasn't it? But I was just being somewhat pushy As my Swedish is inexistant, I don't seem to find anything useful about that book right now. But back on topic: why not try and get in touch with those folks and ask them, and if needed, provide some material on the Swedish leg of the tour?
-
Well, you insinuated that Mosaic intentionally don't mix recordings from more than one major label, as if it was their choice. I guess there's plenty of difficulties in there and I know others have complained here about the fact that most of the time it seems to be impossible to gather recordings from more than one major under one roof - but I really wouldn't want to hold that against Mosaic (which again, is how I understood your post).

Okay, I guess I'll remain grounded, then (I did learn some Cannonball solos once though ... but not from my transcriptions though I do have all the recordings in question ... and, and once I did transcribe a Getz solo, but a short and sweet one, "Insensatez" from "Jazz Bossa Encore", still my favorite of the Getz bossa albums). -
I looked this up too. He also recorded 6 tracks for Decca in 1935 if i'm not mistaken. Does Mosaic ever do combined Universal(Decca) and Sony/BMG sets? They try not to. Gee, grow up!

I know, I know - I enjoy me quite some Phil Woods, was just joking! But I do love that story, I've read it before! -
'Classical' music from the last 50 years (or so)
king ubu replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Classical Discussion
For Hartmann ... not Metzmacher then. How about the Wergo set: http://www.wergo.de/shop/de_DE/3/show,93484.html -
And speaking of Nazis, the newspaper clippings are absolutely intriguing ... the mix of naïvete and plain racism, of helplessness and malignity, is quite something!
-
Intriguing! (But why would there be a restaurant Munich in Copenhagen in 1946 and why would this place - a place that, sorry, sounds lots like nazi in 1946 - have negros playing jazz? Rather weird ... anyone knows the story of that restaurant?)
-
Yeah, with respect to spelling, the Limelight is best. My first CD used that cover, later on I got the VME with the original Mercury cover.

That sounds quite amazing, Chuck! Wish I had such memories!
