"All of Me" is on Bethlehem, mostly with Frank Hunter's orchestra (w/strings), but a few cuts have a jazzier band with sidemen including Howard McGhee, Anthony Ortega, Lucky Thompson, Hank Jones, Milt Hinton, Osie Johnson a.o. (arr. Ernie Wilkins). I tend to prefer the first of Hartman's two Bethlehem albums, "Songs from the Heart" which has a small group under the helm of Ralph Sharon and Howard McGhee in charge of tasty trumpet obbligatos and solos. My favourite so far is "I Just Dropped By to Say Hello", too (I've got the Bethlehems, the one w/Trane and "Unforgettable"). Need some more, some day...

Tchicai will do a short duo tour in Switzerland with Giancarlo Nicolai soon - from his calendar: September 11-15 Switzerland A short duo-tour of John Tchicai and swiss-italian guitarist Giancarlo Nicolai: Sept. 11 Bellinzona, Spazio Culturale Temporaneo Sept. 12 Lugano, Jazz in Besso Sept. 13 Küsnacht Zrich, Kantonsschule Küsnacht Sept. 14 Luzern, Mulbau Sept. 15 Bern, Etage Happens so that the concert on Sept. 13 (which takes place at noon time!) is nearby and our neighbour is an old friend of Tchicai's, so he'll stay at her place - and I'll meet him as she'll be at work... hope to get to chat a little and will of course attend the concert! Never saw him live before and have mostly sideman appearances of his on albums... but I still consider myself a fan and am looking forward to this!

Warne Marsh" Big Two" Is it as good as it looks?
king ubu replied to Jazztropic's topic in Recommendations
Reissued on a 2CD set recently... still need that one - the live boots I've heard of that duo are magnificent! -

Thanks Chuck - I appreciate your honesty, really! Not sure yet when, but there'll be another larger order coming in... -

Great news, Chuck! Particularly good to see release of the early Roscoe session. How about "Have No Fear"... guess this is again an upgrade worth considering over the 1997 Bomba CD? -

Same here... but the price seems to be much kinder than that of the CD box. Will wait and see. -
FS: Oscar Peterson - London House Sessions, OOP 5CD-set
king ubu replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Offering and Looking For...
Someone better grab this - might be my favorite Peterson! (Why are you selling, Hans? Sound quality? It's live and muddy, but I like it!) -
Sorry, what I wanted to say was: *I* got to dig it up - not you! I'm in no position to give orders around here I had the disc in my hands recently but am into other stuff these days.

I believe it's '58 Sessions (On Green Dolphin Street, Fran Dance, Stella By Starlight, Love For Sale, Straight No Chaser, My Funny Valentine, Oleo). They use a Japanese cover. I have it as part of the Original Album Classics 5-fer. Thank you! I only know it by the old "pre-remaster" era US Columbia cover. That album was originally called "Jazz Track". One side had the US release of the soundtrack to Louis Malle's "L'ascenseur pour l'echafaud" while the other side had the '58 session minus it's highlight, "Love for Sale" (that track was later included on one of the albums Columbia put out during one of Miles' hiat... what's the plural there? Hiati? Hitachi? Hiatuses?) large images including liners on discogs.com: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=511939

"Essential" is the place to start. If you like what you hear there, go to the box set collection of the seven LP's. You'll need to keep "Essential" anyways for the single-only releases. "Greatest Hits" was a gem for it's time, but "Essential" renders it totally extraneous. Is there anything on it that's NEITHER on one of the albums NOR on "Greatest Hits"?

Got to dig it out and give it a listen, then... I think there are only three or four tracks on it that I don't have elsewhere.

There was a post somewhere about a Jazz Couriers reissue (the Acrobat disc "Some of My Best Friends Are Blues"?) having this annoying "windows sound" (that can happen if you don't turn sounds off and do a lousy amateurish transfer - shouldn't happen if you enter through some kind of audio gadget, methinks). Anyway, couldn't find that post anymore... what tunes are these sounds in?

Here's our cat... had her for about two years. Can't help it that she enjoys my Mosaics, my Jazz in Paris discs, my books and stuff - never trained her to do so Oh, and note her good taste in films... also, those Soulnotes next to her, that's the Jimmy Lyons discs - her favourite cattin' music

I love "There's a Riot Goin' On" - has been a favorite ever since I was about 13 or 14... the mix of funky horns and keys, rock drums and guitar, Larry Graham's dry and incredibly funky bass, as well as the all 'round good vibes coming from the vocals and Sly's keys... great and unique band! I guess "Stand" or "Life" might maybe make better entry points, though... "Stand" can be had as part of the "Woodstock Experience" 2CD set (coupled with the Woodstock concert). "Dance to the Music" is also very good, while the debut ("A Whole New Thing") is more a promise of greater things to come than a great album in itself. All of the albums have been remastered/reissued in 2007 (including "Greatest Hits" which contains three new songs from 1969 (when it was compiled with tracks from "Dance to the Music", "Life" and "Stand"). "Small Talk" is the one I don't have yet... and didn't know about the "Collection" - but I assume it being OOP it might be cheaper to get the original albums anyway.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
king ubu replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Read the great biographical essay in the Bechet Blue Note box today - and played Bechet's music all day long (not just the Mosaic). -
Charters also wrote liners for the ten Universal reissues (one of them pictured in post #3). Too bad there weren't more to follow!

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
king ubu replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Skipped the Lang/Venuti - money was short and it ran out too soon for me... got the JSP instead. Too bad. Anyway, I've been catching up on some OOP sets (most recently the Satchmo All Stars and the Blue Notes from Bechet and George Lewis) and I hope if I'll be patient, the Lang may turn up, too... -
Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
king ubu replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Fela - The Complete Works of Fela Anikulapo Kuti Again and again played discs from this in the past days... making my way through it, trying to sort things out (they could have programmed this chronologically, methinks... doing my own discography with help of this site now). Needless to say, the music's effin' amazin'! Btw, it's of course not quite complete... but 26 CDs will be more than most want, I guess... Me, I need more Koola Lobitos, that's for sure! -
They could include the live stuff from the Half Note... but I guess legal hurdles would be way too big. Uhm, that's the *inofficial* live material I'm talking of...

The Parker finally... the Turrentine, the Hampton and throwing in a Select (Bechet or Hutcherson) I'd be under 300$ and the $ is worth sh*t... got to think it over.
