  1. No if about it regarding the names you cite, Valerie. Puilling out the old bi-sexual card is just plain naïve—perhaps with a bit of wishful thinking or denial thrown in. You have been on the scene long enough to know that any gay jazz musician had to play the game and at least appear to be bi-sexual, but even that was not accepted—except when it came to women. For some reason, perhaps because many men like to see two women make love, same-sex affairs (or just dancing and holding hands) was quietly acceptable. If a man wants to have sex with another man, and enjoys it, you can call him a grapefruit, bi-sexual, curious, or whatever.. he is as gay as the man who expresses his desires openly. Whatever way I turn it, I don't understand the sentence I put in bold above. Please explain! And Basie? Really? Not that I'd be morally shocked or something, but it always seemed to me he had loads of love and affection for his wife Catherine - "my Katy, my baby" - here's a passage written by Larry Kart in 1986:
  2. yeah! got this a few days ago, giving it a first spin tonight - into the third album by now, not sure about the fourth and fifth, but the first two are classics of course and the third so far sounds very good, too! the five full albums included are: Music for K (Polish Jazz Vol. 22) Twet (Polish Jazz Vol. 39) Music 81 (Polish Jazz Vol. 69) Lady Go Switzerland - Tomasz Stanko Freelectronic Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 1987 in case someone wonders: I bought mine from amazon.fr - pretty acceptable price there... the discs come in mini-lp/replica cardboard sleeves in a small box (CD-sized, roughly) and there's a booklet coming with it - two essays, one on Stanko in general, another one on the albums and the music, both in polish and english. Haven't yet read any of it though.
  3. AWESOME VENERABLE BEAST!!!!!!!! yours???? speeding, drunk, no tags, loud cherry bombs, loud stereo? Not mine, alas... I don't even drive (no need - most of Switzerland by now is kind of suburbia, you get trains and buses everywhere, at least once every hour). Read about it only - seems the steering wheel was too lose for today's rules...
  4. Guess I should really dig it out and read that booklet, then, huh? (Just in case someone wonders, it's this box we're talking of.)
  5. those pictures remind me of the Tin Lizzy that was stopped Sunday by police here: built 1927, still driving!
  6. "Essential" is the place to start. If you like what you hear there, go to the box set collection of the seven LP's. You'll need to keep "Essential" anyways for the single-only releases. "Greatest Hits" was a gem for it's time, but "Essential" renders it totally extraneous. Is there anything on it that's NEITHER on one of the albums NOR on "Greatest Hits"? Four tracks by Little Sister - very Slyish and very good - and various other Sly produced tracks are available on this compilation. Little who? Had no idea Sly was involved there... have had "Stanga" as my ringtone for years (taken from that great Atlantic 4CD rare groove box from several years ago... 'fraid I never looked into the booklet yet ). So that compilation has three of the same four Little Sister cuts? Plus the rest? Guess that would make more sense for me than getting the Essential set - thanks a lot!
  7. German article about the book: http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/kultur/pop-und-jazz/Ganz-schoen-von-gestern/story/17767539 Doesn't make it sound too promising, I'm afraid...

  9. Uhm, I can't find anything on any album called "Last Time Out"... anyone care to enlighten me?
  10. Previous discussion: Me, I'm waiting for the Legacy Edition of "Dave Digs Disney" to arrive... Ooops, sorry, didn't notice the linked thread was started just after the question asked here...
  11. "All of Me" is on Bethlehem, mostly with Frank Hunter's orchestra (w/strings), but a few cuts have a jazzier band with sidemen including Howard McGhee, Anthony Ortega, Lucky Thompson, Hank Jones, Milt Hinton, Osie Johnson a.o. (arr. Ernie Wilkins). I tend to prefer the first of Hartman's two Bethlehem albums, "Songs from the Heart" which has a small group under the helm of Ralph Sharon and Howard McGhee in charge of tasty trumpet obbligatos and solos. My favourite so far is "I Just Dropped By to Say Hello", too (I've got the Bethlehems, the one w/Trane and "Unforgettable"). Need some more, some day...

    John Tchicai

Tchicai will do a short duo tour in Switzerland with Giancarlo Nicolai soon - from his calendar: September 11-15 Switzerland A short duo-tour of John Tchicai and swiss-italian guitarist Giancarlo Nicolai: Sept. 11 Bellinzona, Spazio Culturale Temporaneo Sept. 12 Lugano, Jazz in Besso Sept. 13 Küsnacht Zrich, Kantonsschule Küsnacht Sept. 14 Luzern, Mulbau Sept. 15 Bern, Etage Happens so that the concert on Sept. 13 (which takes place at noon time!) is nearby and our neighbour is an old friend of Tchicai's, so he'll stay at her place - and I'll meet him as she'll be at work... hope to get to chat a little and will of course attend the concert! Never saw him live before and have mostly sideman appearances of his on albums... but I still consider myself a fan and am looking forward to this!
  13. Reissued on a 2CD set recently... still need that one - the live boots I've heard of that duo are magnificent!
  14. Thanks Chuck - I appreciate your honesty, really! Not sure yet when, but there'll be another larger order coming in...
  15. Great news, Chuck! Particularly good to see release of the early Roscoe session. How about "Have No Fear"... guess this is again an upgrade worth considering over the 1997 Bomba CD?
  16. Same here... but the price seems to be much kinder than that of the CD box. Will wait and see.
  17. Someone better grab this - might be my favorite Peterson! (Why are you selling, Hans? Sound quality? It's live and muddy, but I like it!)
  18. Sorry, what I wanted to say was: *I* got to dig it up - not you! I'm in no position to give orders around here I had the disc in my hands recently but am into other stuff these days.
  19. See, I toldya... but always complainin' first, huh?
  20. nah, as a jazz fan you love plenty of cats!
  21. I believe it's '58 Sessions (On Green Dolphin Street, Fran Dance, Stella By Starlight, Love For Sale, Straight No Chaser, My Funny Valentine, Oleo). They use a Japanese cover. I have it as part of the Original Album Classics 5-fer. Thank you! I only know it by the old "pre-remaster" era US Columbia cover. That album was originally called "Jazz Track". One side had the US release of the soundtrack to Louis Malle's "L'ascenseur pour l'echafaud" while the other side had the '58 session minus it's highlight, "Love for Sale" (that track was later included on one of the albums Columbia put out during one of Miles' hiat... what's the plural there? Hiati? Hitachi? Hiatuses?) large images including liners on discogs.com: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=511939

  23. Got to dig it out and give it a listen, then... I think there are only three or four tracks on it that I don't have elsewhere.
