I know Lisette Model and how to spell the name DeCarava, but I've never heard of him... very nice photos there, would certainly enjoy seing more!
  3. Sorry to keep derailing this thread, but here is how to do it: Go to "My Controls" on top, choose "Board Settings" (bottom left), and then there's "Number of posts to show for each topic page" where you can change the value to 40. ------------------- To say something on topic as well: how about "Movements" and "Southern Horizons" - have these ever been out on CD? The later in particular is a hell of a fine album, and a great cover to boot!
  4. Happy Birthday Chris!
  5. Try "What are you listening to right now?", p.5242. p. 1967 în my book (do set the diplay option to 40 posts per page, makes the board far more readable!) http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...&pid=969835 Reading that exchange made me bump this thread here yesterday, but of course I over-read the remarks about the book...
  6. There's a thread (without any substantial discussion yet) on "Killer Joe" here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=32920 And another one about a biography, "Fire in His Soul" by Alan Robertson (again no discussion yet): http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=5117 I love "Free Form" and "Abstract". Also heard some of his other albums (hard to find, I guess...). Less sure about the Indo-Jazz stuff... it's not bad really, but somehow mostly it doesn't seem to really work out well, the music's not integrated well, I think. My favourite indo-jazz fusion will likely remain "Karuna Supreme" with John Handy and Ali Akbar Khan, on MPS.

  8. bumpity bump for paps!
  9. gee, you guys are old!
  10. I think "Motion" was only in the LPR series. Those ought to be OOP but many of them still turn up, some in originals-like digipack versions (I think I saw the Konitz like that). Can't comment on the sound quality, as I have the Elite Edition 3CD set. There's another Universal sale going on here, with lots of the Originals, I bought three by Bonfa, three by Astrud Gilberto, Basie's "Basie Land" (a pleasant surprise!), Getz/Gilberto, Getz Au Go Go, the two Terry Calliers, the latest Blakey, the Milt Jackson at Museum of Modern Art, Dr. John's "City Lights", and a couple of others... still need the other Basie and some more... Nice series, though in some cases it's a nuisance that the old versions are gone (Tyner's Today and Tomorrow, Gato Barbieri's "Latino America" which had Chapters 1 and 2 plus more, Kenny Burrell's Night at the Vanguard...) Oh, one question: that Jimmy Smith that's partly on the Oliver Nelson Mosaic (Virginia Woolf, right? Or is it Hobo Flats?) - need I get the Original for the remaining tracks or is the better part of it on the Mosaic set?
  11. Ok, will do my best then...
  12. I can't quite put it in words... but the album is so lovely and I'm not sure to risk spoiling that by a mediocre concert experience... It's like with favorite books - it's not always (I'd even say: not often) a good idea to meet (or just see in person) the artist behind it. But then this is about music (and hence about performing), so my doubts are likely unnecessary.

Felix Pollak (1909 Wien - 1987 Madison, USA) taken from this great book:
  15. The grunting is probably Elvin. I have a great live recording ( that I made at the time myself) from 1980 of Elvin at the VV with Woody Shaw (for one tune), Andrew White, Ari Brown and Andy McCloud. Insanely fierce! Has that recording made the rounds? I think I may have it! I'm never sure how much discussion of such live shows is welcome here and hence haven't explored my files to post more here, although I'm sure it would be welcome by those involved in the discussions... it's a bit of a touchy subject and I don't want to step onto someone's toes here.
  16. Happy Birthday, Guy! Thanks for everything!
  17. bumpity bump... I wonder, has anyone seen CéU live? She'll play a club here on Friday night and I think I have to go... but then I'm not sure what to expect: an attempt (bound to fail?) to re-create the electronic aspects of the music in the live setting as well, or more of a groove oriented, actual "live" concert? Also has anyone checked out her new disc? It came out last week but local shops are just too expensive as far as new releases are concerned... will look for it in the internets sometime later.
  18. Paul Weller had some of the London acid jazz guys on his 90s band... pretty fun stuff!
  19. Just played their second album on the ipod while on the way to work... great stuff indeed! Even the vocal tracks are cool, although the singing is rather dreadful.
  20. Dudu Pukwana also did some afro pop stuff... remember Assagai? Dudu, Mongezi Feza and Louis Moholo were members of that band. Some more info here: http://www.radagast.org/assagai/ You can hear a track from an album here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S38YBnm_UuY Not bad at all!
  21. Jay Berliner would be a good example for guys that did work all over the place... Solomon Ilori, Charles Mingus, Harry Belafonte/Miriam Makeba, Laura Nyro, Dick Hyman, George Benson, Milt Jackson (Sunflower on CTI), Airto, Grover Washington, Deodato, Burt Bacharach, Frank Sinatra, Helen Merrill w/Gil Evans, Van Morrison, Harry Connick, Peggy Lee, Don Byron, Eartha Kitt, Barbara Carroll, Bette Midler, Blossom Dearie, Ithamara Koorax, Ute Lemper, Peter Paul & Mary, Astrud Gilberto... various soundtracks, as well as - on AMG at least - two albums under his own name, one that looks like a classical (of the easy kind, I guess), and this one here, with a cover so cool I got to attach it here:
  22. I don't know his Dreyfus recordings... you'll see that he hasn't got many friends here... I'm a bit torn myself. I got the BN set at a used store (way overpriced, but that was when I was still in high school, knew nothing about the internet and had no credit card...) and honestly, you won't need all that's in there... probably "Power of Three" and "Promenade with Duke" would do. The two Elektra (?) albums that Blue Note released (I think around 2000) are both pretty nice (one solo, one trio). And the Owl album with Lee Konitz is definitely worth getting! There's another Owl disc out that I have, a trio set, good one, too. I guess that's more an answer for a recommendations thread, rather than an offering/looking for... but hey... Owl also has a 2CD best of, which picks tracks from his four or five discs for the label - I haven't checked that one out, but my guess is the duo with Lee Konitz is a better pick anyway.
  23. Yes, Berliner's doing those acoustic intros/interludes on "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady", I think!
  24. Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" (Warner, 1968) has quite a band: Jay Berliner (g), Richard Davis (b), Connie Kay (d), Warren Smith Jr. (perc, vib), John Payne (fl,ss) - I don't know Payne and am not sure what corner Berliner is coming from, but having Richard Davis/Connie Kay is quite a treat (same rhythm section as on Lucky Strikes by Lucky Thompson)!
  25. Yes, the Crusaders are good! I have the three live albums and the Chile one (I think another live album failed to appear on CD before EMI folded up its jazz department?). The live material is all good! I think the Turrentine is fine, but it was among my first 15 or 20 jazz purchases, so I may not be objective...
