  1. Mike is much better at describing the merits of "Chile Con Soul", of course! But I'm a wee bit proud that I felt that it was more than just a gimmick easy listening thing... because easy it is... smooth wasn't a four-letter word in... Sangrey's time? Or was that even before? The funny thing is, reading about their disco hats - that's the first I heard of them, a sleazy bit of jazz funk, no idea what the disc was called, but a girl at my highschool (hellyeah, I had a crush on her!) lent me a pile of funk and rare groove discs once (including some really cool stuff, such as Carol Kaye) and among them was one by The Crusaders. So my first reaction upon hearing about a Mosaic set was astonishment... but then curiosity got the better of me and I checked out the live albums a year or so ago (I remained sceptical for quite a while) and I was very pleasantly surprised to hear how good this stuff is! Here's another related disc that is pretty nice:
  2. And it's part of Universal's "Originals" series by now - see my post above... I wasn't aware that the "Jazz" part of their name was still intact by that time!
  3. Thanks MG - too bad! Btw, this is off topic here, but at least "Pass the Plate" from the later period when they called themselves The Crusaders, is very much worth hearing, too! I also have the first and second crusade albums, as well as the Socks/Shoes ones - they have all been reissued in Universal's "Originals" series in the past years. I don't have "Images", just in case. I guess by that point, I'm no longer interested that much...
  4. I'm interested in the answer(s) as well! Got the five you pictured above (found the last one in a local EMI sale I think, but it took a while to turn up). The Chile I bought cheaply at Mediamarkt in Budapest, of all places... It's better than I'd expected (I was expecting some "stoopid music" but it's way more than that!)
  5. Here's the sanitized version of a little review I sent to a friend immediately after the concert... I'm still living on it! ------------ Sort of electro brasil bossa trip hop or some such, with CéU (or Céu or céu or however) something between a goddess and a crazy chick, dancing around, shaking her booty... and a nice band: good bassist with an old (I think) fender bass and great "felt"-bass sound, fine crappy drummer doing weird fills, then the dj guy (doing some scratching, some sounds, and having the studio albums on the turntable to provide some background vocals where needed - Céu overdubbed those for the albums), and a great guy playing keys (an old synthesizer with great fender, organ and wurli sounds... no idea what it was exactly, I was on the other end of the stage), guitar, and accordion. One of the highlights was their take of "It Takes Two to Tango" - I fell in love with that songs when I first heard Lester Young do his own version (with additional slippery lyrics) on an outtake/rehearsal from the Pres Plays with Peterson/Collates date on Verve. Holy, holy, I'm quite enthusiastic although I can see that the music of Céu can easily be dismissed as being just some young ones toying around with grown-up stuff that they don't really understand... but who cares, it's fun, it grooves like mad, and it sounds great, lots of good vibes and stuff... ------------ and in the meantime I have played her second album about seven times or so, and I think it's even better than the first (although it's very similar in overall "design")
  6. I enjoy this disc a lot! Might have been my first Herman disc...
  7. Ivory Hunters was released again this year by Lonehill, although I haven't heard it. Seems like a good alternative to Blue Note's $17-SRP burned disc, assuming the sound isn't notably inferior. Ah well, that's the kind of Lonehill release I really hate... but if there's no real alternative AND I find a cheap copy, I'll grab it, then.
  8. not to be too grumpy, but a search would have led to many similar discussions, most notably here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=14098 I'm a huge Mingus fan, so I want it all, but depending if you enjoy freer stuff or not, my favorites would include: Blues & Roots (and Pithecantropus Erectus, The Clown, Tonight at Noon) East Coasting Tijuana Moods (make sure you get the Bluebird First Editions 2CD edition!) Mingus in Wonderland Mingus Ah Um (Dynasty is fine, too!) Mingus Presents Mingus (though there's good stuff on all the other Candid discs as well, and Mingus At Antibes is cool, too!) and if you like freer stuff, also something from 1964 (Cornell, the two Live In Europe discs on Enja, one of the Paris concerts...) also Black Saint and the Sinner Lady and as mentioned above, the piano solo album is marvellous as well
  9. If anyone happens to have a spare Evans shrapnell box to sell, PM me.. mine's looking like a dud from around Verdun times by now... dug up last year or so... but alas I'm not selling it...
  10. Ha, good to hear I'm not alone there... I played most of the Art Pepper boxes, all of Evans' Riverside, most of Monk's Riverside (had much of it before anyway), but Evans' Fantasy box is one I still need to dig into... I put on some of it as background music now and then, but never sat down and listened... same for all the final recordings - great, great music, all of it played now and then, but never really sat down and listened attentively. Btw, I think to help those who have no Evans boxes, this would be my preferences: Riverside (+ K2 Village Vanguard 3CD set) Verve (it's huge, the packaging is silly, but the music... never ends!) Secret Sessions (it's in not that great sound mostly, but showcases several versions of working trios, including some not documented or not documented thoroughly elsewhere... and some more with Philly JJ!) then I'd go for one of the final 1980 boxes, maybe the Warner one first? and then I guess the Fantasy and the remaining 1980 boxes (the two on Fantasy) not to forget the ones not in any box: - Tenderly (a 1957 rehearsal with Don Elliott, on Fantasy) - the Columbia discs (two of them, plus the stuff on those third stream sessions, which makes a third) - "Undercurrent", the UA duo with Jim Hall (on Blue Note CD) - the album with Bob Brookmeyer (UA/BN as well - never managed to find that one alas!) - the Elektra/Warner Paris albums - the four final albums on Warner (various editions, the fine trio album is around with bonus tracks in case you care) I guess that about wraps up the essentials Fantasy has some more live shows out, including a trio with Michael Moore on bass (yes, the film-maker... or is it the sax player? Seriously, Moore's a fine bass player, I think he was with Brubeck for a while... though )
  11. CéU tonight - looking forward a lot, bought her new disc yesterday!

  14. Sorry to keep derailing this thread, but here is how to do it: Go to "My Controls" on top, choose "Board Settings" (bottom left), and then there's "Number of posts to show for each topic page" where you can change the value to 40. ------------------- To say something on topic as well: how about "Movements" and "Southern Horizons" - have these ever been out on CD? The later in particular is a hell of a fine album, and a great cover to boot!
  15. Happy Birthday Chris!
  16. Try "What are you listening to right now?", p.5242. p. 1967 în my book (do set the diplay option to 40 posts per page, makes the board far more readable!) http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...&pid=969835 Reading that exchange made me bump this thread here yesterday, but of course I over-read the remarks about the book...
  17. There's a thread (without any substantial discussion yet) on "Killer Joe" here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=32920 And another one about a biography, "Fire in His Soul" by Alan Robertson (again no discussion yet): http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=5117 I love "Free Form" and "Abstract". Also heard some of his other albums (hard to find, I guess...). Less sure about the Indo-Jazz stuff... it's not bad really, but somehow mostly it doesn't seem to really work out well, the music's not integrated well, I think. My favourite indo-jazz fusion will likely remain "Karuna Supreme" with John Handy and Ali Akbar Khan, on MPS.

  20. gee, you guys are old!
  21. I think "Motion" was only in the LPR series. Those ought to be OOP but many of them still turn up, some in originals-like digipack versions (I think I saw the Konitz like that). Can't comment on the sound quality, as I have the Elite Edition 3CD set. There's another Universal sale going on here, with lots of the Originals, I bought three by Bonfa, three by Astrud Gilberto, Basie's "Basie Land" (a pleasant surprise!), Getz/Gilberto, Getz Au Go Go, the two Terry Calliers, the latest Blakey, the Milt Jackson at Museum of Modern Art, Dr. John's "City Lights", and a couple of others... still need the other Basie and some more... Nice series, though in some cases it's a nuisance that the old versions are gone (Tyner's Today and Tomorrow, Gato Barbieri's "Latino America" which had Chapters 1 and 2 plus more, Kenny Burrell's Night at the Vanguard...) Oh, one question: that Jimmy Smith that's partly on the Oliver Nelson Mosaic (Virginia Woolf, right? Or is it Hobo Flats?) - need I get the Original for the remaining tracks or is the better part of it on the Mosaic set?
  22. Ok, will do my best then...
  23. I can't quite put it in words... but the album is so lovely and I'm not sure to risk spoiling that by a mediocre concert experience... It's like with favorite books - it's not always (I'd even say: not often) a good idea to meet (or just see in person) the artist behind it. But then this is about music (and hence about performing), so my doubts are likely unnecessary.
