  1. Ok, the vendor with the vanished mail bags kept word... I just got another Shank/Cooper... So I'd have one for trade, in exchange for a Pacific Jazz Piano Trio Select, it seems. Anyone interested? Used condition (I haven't seen it yet, seems to have a few very small scratches, nothing to be worried about).
  2. I thought I'd seen "Jacknife" in the on-going EMI sales over here... but I might have been mixing it up with another Mac... never got those as I have the 64-66 Mosaic box. Some of his finest albums in there!
  3. Thanks Mike! I dimly remember previous discussion of the date with Amy - that one is nowhere to be found except on this compilation then? Looks like I'll need a copy!
  4. Bona was devastatingly bad... he couldn't sing and they didn't cancel it... the crowd adored him (my theory is: every chick in there wanted to do the ole in-and-out with him, while every bloke wished he was so cool and tall and all...). Anyway, I told that story to some in German and don't feel like repeating. In short: he noticed early on that people would frenetically applaud whatever he did (silly political stories that went on for way too long, for instance), and he played it very easy, performing some ugly fusion music, showing off his chops, doing a Jaco song (that started out great but turned into a silly quote-fest), doing sing-alongs in every other song, telling the crowd that he'll fire his band and take them along on his tour because they sing so well... yuck yuck. I wrote an email to the club, but of course got no reply... Couple of days before I caught BraffOesterRohrer again - a whole different story! Most certainly one of the finest piano trios around these days! Braff is incredible, and Rohrer is one of the funniest, wittiest, most playful drummers I've seen (in the league of Joey Baron or Bobby Previte, I guess, though he's different... less "chops" and more whimsicality, I guess). I'm thinking of catching CéU live on Friday. Her second album is just out but I didn't get it yet (too expensive here, will have to search the webs for a feasible offer). Anyone caught her live?
  5. One of my Shank/Coop orders finally came through (fourth or even fifth attempt). The set is waiting for me at Niko's... Bad luck on the Pacific Trios, though. Also, I left the first negative feedback for one of the no-good orders... the vendor sent me an email, asking me, with many kind and complicated phrases, to be so kind to remove that feedback and what they could do in order for me to do so... well, just find me that box, nothing easier, is there? Seriously, I'm kind of pissed by them even daring to ask me to remove that feedback! It took them five days to cancel my order (but they, at least - and contrary to others - didn't charge my credit card). What do you do with such no-good orders? Leave no feedback, leave negative feedback (one out of five stars is actually one too many... and I guess rates as 20%, when instead it should be 0%). I still have one open order for another Shank/Cooper (credit card charged weeks ago - same vendor that cancelled/refunded my Pacific Trios order as the mail bag was lost, see above... somehow they think they can still fill the Shank/Coop order, but I guess they'll just buy some more p0rn before letting me know that another mail bag was drowned in the Atlantic ocean or some such...) I'll certainly leave negative feedback there as well, once I know what's going on!
  6. Mike, please post a comment here with some more details about the contents once you've got the disc! I have the great Tobacco twofer and will have to get the Live and w/McCann and the Mighty Quinn discs as well... I wonder how much is left to hear on this compilation then...
  7. Got to look for that one! Took me a while to dig Roy, but had a very, very nice personal encounter with him in Paris. He played (the now defunct, I think) "Sept Lezards" club with Joelle Leandre - just the two of them. There was hardly an audience - the top floor was a bar/restaurant, in the cellar there was a horrible little room for music. Some of the dining folks came down but they quickly disappeared again... I got to chat with the lady next to me, and turns out she's Roy's girlfriend. I mention having a disc or two of Roy's, and then in the break she told him and he was very pleased to find a fan in the room (well, an acquaintance of Joelle Leandre's was there, too, makes two of us... the rest of the audience consisted of three or four people). Roy was great to talk to.... very knowledgeable and thoughtful person, seems he payed plenty of dues and knows quite well where he's going and what he's doing, musically. (I find many musicians lacking as far as reflecting their own art goes... lacking may be too negative a word as an artist doesn't have to be a critic/historian at the same time, but I still find it irritating rather often.) Anyway, they invited me over for the second night, and of course I went back - and yes, I felt bad being on the guest list, while there were just... four or five? paying customers that night as well. The music they performed was great, a mix of various styles that somehow turned out very well. Leandre did all that wild stuff, including frantic bowing and some of her weird singing, and Campbell played the trumpet (and/or a cornet, can't remember) as well as the flute (regular one), and brought plenty of roots into the mix. In some of his solos, I thought I could virtually hear the whole history of jazz trumpet playing... but he's working and playing with it, reflecting it, turning it into his own, personal statement, not merely recycling it.

Missed this news - very sad.
  10. Ronnie Ross turns in a fine baritone solo on Lou Reed's "Transformer"! Scott Walker is very much worth checking out! I'd go for "Drift" - not sure what to call that, but it's clearly some kind of avantgarde! I think "Climate of Hunter" is the one with Evan Parker? French "Jazz Magazine" have a little story (an excerpt of an upcoming book) about Robert Wyatt and his jazz connections. Not a person, but Gil Evans' wonderful "Las Vegas Tango" turns up opening and closing Wyatt's album "The End of An Ear". Sidemen there include Marc Charig and Elton Dean.
  11. yup, sounds interesting Allen - good luck!
  12. The final concerts with Joe (by Mat's Pentagon) can be found here: http://www.bengerstein.com/other.html (I hope posting this link is ok - the site hosting the files is by the band's trombone player Ben Gerstein!)
  13. Here's that thing: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats Brief Description Open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations in the file formats new to Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displayLang=en I see MS Access isn't mentioned. And Bruce, glad to read your PS, too!
  14. Happy Birthday!
  15. There's a good article on Threadgill in the November issue of The Wire! Just bought and read it yesterday - I guess I'll have to pre-order this box now, sounds really like a ton of great music! I only have a very sketchy knowledge of Threadgill so far: Nessa Air, one of the Columbias, a bunch of boots... and recently got the two ATR CDs, silly I skipped the vinyl - will that one come out on CD as well? I think it says so on the website, but are there any news about that?
  16. Thanks for the reminder - I've had them on my radar for a while! I absolutely need the Harry Miller disc, and whenever I'll actually order, I'll grab a few more... So I don't have any of them so far
  17. I have my huge jazz live shows database in access... about five sheets (the rock/blues/soul etc list is growing quickly as well) with probably 7000 entries, and it works without any problems - I have had Vista for about five weeks now and had no major problems (except for the email stuff described above, and some annyoing warning tones, which - funny enough - come up in Access now and then). If you need help finding the compatibility thingie, let me know - I think I might have the link for it somewhere! But it should be fairly easy to find.
  18. @MG: there's a small compatibility thingie you can install - that will allow you to read those files (they appear as .docx). Go to the Windowsupdate page and look for it, takes three minutes to do and you'll be able to open word and excel files created with new versions of MS Office.
  19. glad you caught it before it went under
  20. Well, stay assured the only swiss jazz fan remembers him and likes this album discussed here a lot! Other than that I have his Terrones/Marge/Blue Marge whatever label disc, "Cattin'" - not as fine, but good enough! Spin TFD right now and it's being played in two Swiss locations at the same time. Sorry I missed this yesterday... was home completely exhausted from work, zapping around and watching boring football on TV

  24. I found "At This Time" at the used store yesterday! No time to listen yet, but nice to have it!
  25. I don't know the Japanese edition but I always figured that the two US discs contain all the material there is. One or both of them have been in the massive EMI/Blue Note deletings list a few months ago, I think, just in case...
