That Peterson is nice... I got mine for about 15€ and thought that was a great deal already... Some may consider there to be too many notes, though

The main Newbury site says this is back-ordered, but the deal is still up on Amazon. I figure it is worth a shot. That occurs fairly often--Newbury's Amazon Marketplace stock and/or price is not always the same as what's reflected on the Newbury site. Also, mine has apparently shipped! Amazon has switched over to a new procedure for most of its Marketplace sellers (including Newbury), so that it doesn't actually charge your credit card--and send you a notice of same--until it has been notified by the Marketplace seller that the item has actually shipped. The order also displays in your order history as "open," and not "completed," until that occurs. I got one of those charging notices from Amazon today, and the order now shows as "completed." This is a significant improvement to the Marketplace system, although Amazon doesn't seem to have done much to publicize it. I'm not sure about that. After the Mosaic debacle, I've had a couple of orders that were charged a week after ordering, and then another ten days later I got a refund, and I still believe that the item listed was never really in stock with the vendors. I guess if a vendor just tells Amazon to charge, they do so, regardless if the vendor actually has shipped the item or not. Refunds, however, have never been a problem for me, I always got them. But it's still a doubtful business practice in my opinion. But back on topic: seems my Garner box is on its way, too! Cool!

I'd try and find the 2CD "Innovations" band reissue (on Blue Note/Capitol). Almeida is there (but not "Lament"), as are Art Pepper, Shorty Rogers, Maynard Ferguson etc etc. As a supplement, there's also the Graettinger compilation "City of Glass". Then I'd go for some of the 50s discs (Kenton Showcase, Easy Go...) - look for who are the featured soloist and get those with soloists you like.

Yeah, and Michael Jackson on guitar

The KD was also reissued on CD in the Chessmates series. Not sure if it still can be found in that version, but it's worth trying! I still dream of seing Vol. 2 some day...

Thanks for that great write-up - makes me wanna dig out my Knit edition of this set and play that stuff again! And yes Chuck: sure would be great if all of this sounded even half as great as "Saga"!
-
Those Almeida albums are Brazilliance Vols 1 & 2 (on regular US CDs, that is). Between them the contain, I think, three albums (some ten inchers), Almeida & Bud Shank, backed by Babasin/Harte. Good stuff, and certainly discussed elsewhere! As for "Cuban Fire", I think that's mostly just Kenton's regular band there... these "guest musicians from the west coast" were member of his band! (At one point or the other, they included Frank Rosolino, Bud Shank, Art Pepper, Shorty Rogers, Bob Cooper, Shelly Manne, and many, many others... also non WC guys like Stan Levey, Charlie Mariano, Lee Konitz...)

you absolutely HAVE to look for this one here:

I ordered a copy... though I just bought three of the albums as cutouts... will pass those on if the box comes through. The three cutouts cost me twice as much as the box now...

Btw, there's a mistake on the big Columbia box (one title is duplicated at the end, instead of there being the actual alternate take). Don't have the info at hand, but mmilovan (where are you, buddy?) knew the details... I guess that would be the same on the new version, or would they invest time to fix such a goof for a cheapo version? Let me search my mails... Holy crap, Opera Mail is amazing, already found it: "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" (session with Jonah Jones and Ben Webster) - instead of the alternate take, at the end of the set where the collected alternates are located, the master take is sequenced again.

This looks great! Guess I won't make it to Paris in time, alas... Just skipped through the press release... those photos for "You're Under Arrest" are amazingly ugly... I think the main reason I don't like that album as much as most other of Miles' 80s albums is that disgusting cover shot. It's not the fact that he carries a gun - looks like a silly toy anyway - but the whole combination of red, black, leather... yuck!

Buy booze, go to Tahiti, order porn...... gregmo yeah, who'd have thunk it seriously: does this sound like a scam or am I being touchy? I guess I'll know the day I get my Shank/Cooper (would be #2 if the other order indeed goes through) or my refund...

Thanks for the reactions folks! "Anthem" just didn't do much for me (at least that was my first impression, checking it out in the store). It'll probably be a while before I get more Dead, but I'll know where to look!

knock knock... are new guys allowed in here, 50 pages into this mammoth thread? here's what I just posted in the listening thread... being a total Dead newbie... Grateful Dead - Live/Dead Grateful Dead - History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 (Bear's Choice) Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead Grateful Dead - American Beauty The Dead, well... it was the very first time I bought any Dead on Saturday, and I played all four in a row and enjoyed it a lot. I skipped a few other earlier albums (the second and Aoxomoxoa) - they didn't do much for me upon first listen, too much psychedelia in there... give me the folkish stuff and I'll be happy! I did quite enjoy "Live/Dead" though... sounded similar to Big Brother and the Holding Company (backing Janis, I don't know anything else by them, if there is at all) to my ears... slightly trippier, a bit weirder (and with whimpish/whimsical drumming... not that that is a bad thing, and I'm sure in an actual concert they had more presence and volume...)

ok, seems one order for Shank/Cooper got through... not sure on the status of the other one - for which the following story: I got a mail a day after the final day of the estimated delivery period from said vendor (a big one, I've not had major problems with so far, once they had a "new", well it was [re-]sealed..., disc up and it was very clearly a used one...). So in that mail, they ask me if the package has arrived. No, I reply, but I wouldn't worry, as the delivery period was estimated rather shortish (it had to cross the pond, or should have had to...) A day after I get another mail that a whole shipment of theirs (a post bag they said) was lost, they said it checked out on their end but never checked in anywhere else. They would get a replacement for me... Ok, swell... how will they get a replacement of an OOP item? Yeah, well... Another day later, I get a cancellation note (for the same reason: shipping lost) and refund information for the Pacific Jazz Piano Trios box. The Shank/Cooper order with them is still open, but I guess it's only a question of time until I get a cancellation note and refund as well. So, what's your impression? Is this a fraud, or was there actually a mail bag lost (a container drowned in the ocean with my Selects? a pickpocket at US customs who collects and puts up on ebay OOP Mosaics? A slimy Frenchie who does the same on the other end of the pond?) Or are the speculants among these marketplace sellers? What the fuck do they do with my money in the month or so between I get charged and between their refund? I guess for a select, you could buy about one bullet or something...)
