How or Why Did My Name Change with the Upgrade
king ubu replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Forums Discussion
but you're aware it already happened with the last upgrade, right? I think it was discussed back then, and several people have other display names since then .... (no idea why login name and display name would ever have been separate things ... but I guess someone with administrator rights could log-in to the "back end" of the forum - where you manage/ban users etc. - and just change the names again?) -
Thanks, will have to consider as it does interesting!

Thanks for sharing your impressions - is it a proper (pressed as opposed to burned) DVD? Anyway, sounds more like something I'd enjoy catching on telly rather than buying ... but I'd be interested to see it - if it ever runs on the beeb, let us know please!

Had the same, a few months ago - got the Armstrong, wanted the Condon/Freeman - they made up and as it was trans-Atlantic, I didn't have to return the Armstrong, which was mighty generous of them ... I donated it to the Swiss Jazz Museum as I already have my copy of it and would have felt like a cheap whore had I sold it on

Had missed this before - sad news indeed.

Interesting point, Allen. This kind of soloing really builds nothing all too often and is totally devoid of real emotion. Don't feel this with, say, Illinois Jacquet or Thomas Chapin, but there are lesser musicians ... sticking to the old ones, Flip Phillips would be one (though he made some good records, too).

Miles Davis Complete Blackhawk
king ubu replied to LouisvillePrez's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
... the "Teo" from Carnegie Hall is one great romp! And Mobley has some fine spots on "Someday" - the fact that it fell between the (sorta) complete boxes is quite sad indeed. -

Obviously, but that's a completely different thing ... switch one guy and the band is totally different. The fall 1960 tour with Stitt I'd also prefer to the Blackhawk recordings, I think, as Miles takes on the challenge there (and Kelly reacts to that), while at the Blackhawk they're content to play in the pocket - nice enough and surely more difficult to do than it would seem, but over the course of four discs also somewhat boring, eventually. But I'd have a rather hard time thinking of better dinner party music -
Joyeux anniversaire, Guy! C'était très bien de te rencontrer autre fois!

Miles Davis Complete Blackhawk

I like it, but I prefer the Carnegie Hall concert: There have been various previous threads of course: htttp://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/1618-miles-blackhawk/ or www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/1004-comp-miles-blackhawk-up-for-pre-order/ -
Right, guess I implied that rather than outright saying it. Pretty rotten scene. yup ... and I edited my post in a way it kinda repeated your point, only realizing after having posted it. re: Monk's Casino - loved it live, but for many reasons none of which included Schlippenbach. Don't need it on disc though.

Thought Schleiss wasn't really legal /straightforward either, appropriating by force what wasn't really hers - ugly story there, from what I've read ... but then this is one of those cases were some might feel inclined to have a right to hear stuff ... and I guess you'll always find some musician not happy with someone's label, but then that's no reason for excuses either.

hm, no idea, but jazzwerkstatt has done some nice stuff, also their own recordings ...

If they offer that at such a low price, the lady must have had some generous Russian sponsor ... no wonder nobody buys Miklos Spányi's complete recording on period keyboards, all single CDs at normal price. I know he had to pay for the recording sessions himself, the label just finances the pressing and such. But it must be dull to listen to all that on modern piano. I recently asked about Spanyi when there was a sale, but got no recommendations at all ... there are like ... 300 discs, so where to start? First impression is not dull at all, rather quite surprising, but I'm only two discs in.

Still not through with unum cypher's great book, but some things need to be tended to, so this one comes in between ... it's much less closely focussed on the actual music than Gioia, goes in bigger swipes, giving the "big picture" in a sense (also sometimes in a way that I think is not really accurate, but no biggies so far) ... anyway, if I had read this when growing up (and into jazz music at the same time), I'm sure it would have been about as helpful as Berendt's "Jazz Book" proved to be (and in some cases as mis-leading, since it's sometimes difficult to challenge views one has settled on in youth ... or rather, it's difficult to realise which parts of these views should be challenged in the first place). So this is not a full endorsement, but I'm not saying one shouldn't read this either ...

five spokes, three of which are too long

EI's choice of words, of course ...

No, it was a ballsy thing to do, ya know, cojones and toughguy-ny-isms. No button for withdrawing around

taking off an hour or two to think of that word: discombobulated

no idea ... they say on CD for the first time, so could be good or bad or worse ... it's a fine album and the reissue history it went through sucks bigtime. In the early 90s, there was a GRP disc with two extra tracks, and then they followed up with the silly "Originals" series that made, sort of, vinyl reissues for CD listeners ... would have been nice if Universal/Vivendi/whomever did at least one proper reissue of all the material, really, but ... what is it with guitar albums anway, Jim Hall's great Pacific Jazz album never was properly reissued either if I'm not mistaken
-
sorry to hear this, hope he'll fully recover!

Agreed - "Baritone Madness" happens to be one of the few of the albums included that I've had a chance to hear ("Neo/Nistico" and the Reece are the only others, I think) - and while ragged, it's quite a nice indeed!
