  1. here's the order I put in: 1 IN 505599 Eskelin, Ellery VANISHING POINT 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 501521 Jörgensmann Quartet, Theo SNIJBLOEMEN 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 505595 Koglmann, Franz L'HEURE BLEUE 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 505594 Law Quartet, John ABACUS 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 505600 McPhee Po Music, Joe OLEO 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 505597 Nagl Ensemble, Max RAMASURI 4,99 € 4,99 € 1 IN 505592 Shipp String Trio, Matthew EXPANSION, power, release. I have most of the other things I am interested in... Of Nagl I've got "Flamingos" and like it, and I also heard a live broadcast of the Ramasuri project, so this should be good. Shipp is someone I'm not sure about - his ThirstyEar stuff I'm not really interested it (the Spooky thing was so boring!), but some of his hats are quite ok. Law has a good review in Penguin, I think? All or most of the items available are NOT part of the mid-prize thing, by the way! But then, it's all together a rather mediocre offering, not containing many great items (except the Lloyd and mainly the first of the Ortegas).
  2. Wow, cool! Don't miss Ortega's "New Dance"! "Scattered Clouds" is fine, too. Also the Jon Lloyd is great! The Joe Maneri would open the way into a total new territory (micro-tonal music, he's got several discs out on ECM, too, and Mat Maneri is his son and deeply involved, too, although his own hats are not that terrific, mostly, rather just ok stuff, though I do like "So What" and the duo with Matt Shipp, whcih is OOP I think).
  3. quite skinny that... let me add her, divided through two that would make...
  4. How does Joe Malinga and his marvellous album ("Tears for the Children of Soweto") fit in the larger picture? I am aware that the LP was recorded in a small village nearby where I grew up, and it seems like half of the musicians are swiss or german, but does anyone have any background info? I'm much too young to know... Zurich was, way before Malinga, one of the havens for ZA musicians. There was a club where Dollar Brand used to play. I think the saga goes that Sathima Bea Benjamin dragged Duke Ellington there, after he gave a concert in Zurich, and he was impressed enough to hire Abdullah for a US tour, and the first record also was called "Ellington Presents..." The site of the local club "Bazillus" (founded by trumpet player Beat Kennel in the early 60s, longtime as an illegal cellar club, now completely legal with a funny website - check the "lookingBack" link) has some history bits, including one about that legendary club which was called "Africana", I copy some of the images from there (http://www.bazillusclub.ch/): Early sixties THE BLUE NOTES Concert at Africana ON PICT:CHRIS MacGREGOR’S BLUE NOTES from Southafrica f.l.t.r. 5. All the best Mike! I hope to see you soon at your gig in Zurich!
  6. The Kippie thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...6&hl=kippie The Dollar Brand thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...bdullah+ibrahim Edit: here's the thread I mentioned about that compilation (on the Heads Up label): http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...+straight+ahead
  7. There's a thread about Kippie and one about Dollar Brand, a search for Kippie should help you find them. There's also a thread about a compilation of current ZA Jazz somewhere (recommendations or new releases). Ngquawana is a fine musician, I just recently picked up a disc of his: It features Andile Yenana on piano, another fine younger musician. Here's a rather useful website: http://www.music.org.za/ It would indeed be good to have some links to good sites here, as I haven't found all that many helpful sites so far, myself. Website of Sheer Sound: http://www.sheersound.co.za/ Another site, discussing some CDs: http://www.muzikifan.com/southafrica.html The jazz page of the afribeat site (http://www.afribeat.com/): http://www.afribeat.com/cape%20town/jazzpage.htm Doug Payne has a Masekela disco up on his site, but I can't access it right now (having trouble displaying other sites, too, so I hope the problem is on my end): www.dougpayne.com/
  8. Happy Birthday Hans, I wish you all the best!
  9. Sorry to be late, hope you had a good one!
  10. Happy Birthday!
  11. Happy Birthday, John!
  12. Hey, no problem, mistakes do happen! That live broadcast, by the way, was the first time I heard Gambarini, and I was impressed enough to start a thread about her (I think that was on AAJ, back in mid 2003 when I was still posting there).
  13. Roy Hargrove is the trumpet player and of course Willie Jones III on drums. Correct !! But Ray Brown should have been 77 and my bass player is more a youngster ... 75 years old at this recording !! Both players passed away recently. 350 x | Keep swinging Durium Jimmy Woode played in that band, I think. On piano then Ronnie Matthews? Great King Ubu, but the piano player is not Ronnie Matthews, but David Gazarov, both playing in the same style - so i can imagine that you mixed up both piano players. Gazarov is the speaker ...... It's from a airshot of the Swiss radio from the International Jazz Festival in Bern. I heard this vocalist and band in the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen ( The Netherlands) ( my club) and was fascinated by the singing of Roberta Gambarini and I posted a message on internet that I had learned that to my utter amazement Roberta Gambarina had never made a recording, although she was active as a jazz vocalist in Italy and the US for years. Thanks to a Swiss collector ( was it you? ) I got this airshot. And of course it felt as an honor to be in the same room as Jimmy Woode, the humble bassplayer who played with all great stars of the 1950s, from Sidney Bechet, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday up to Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Johnny Hodges. BTW: Roberta Gambarini recently made some albums !! This is the info for this track: 12. What Is This Thing Called Love ( Porter ) 9:18 Roberta Gambarini All Star Quintet: ( Roberta Gambarini vo – not on this track), Roy Hargrove tp, David Gazarov p, Jimmy Woode b, Willie Jones III. Recorded at the International Jazz festival Bern (Switzerland), 24 April 2003 ( radio program) One year online | Keep swinging Durium Hm, I have Mathews listed as pianist on that recording, but I still have it on tapes somewhere (so no, you didn't get it from me - I have seen it on others lists, too, but mine still needs to be digitized...). I guesss Gazarov is announced? I am totally unfamiliar with him.
  14. Congrats! I just got your current record of the month recently, haven't had a chance to play it yet, alas!
  15. #148 The Complete Capitol Small Group Recordings of Benny Goodman 1944-1955 (4 CDs or 6 Q-LPs) disc 4, part 2
  16. BG disc 4, part 1
  17. BG disc 3, part 2
  18. BG disc 3, part 1
  19. BG disc 2, part 2
  20. BG disc 2, part 1
  21. BG disc 1, part 2
  22. BG disc 1, part 1
  23. Thank you, I'll correct that above. I got the info for these last sessions from jazzdisco.org, since a sampler of it came out on Blue Note and is listed there, with that wrong info, as it seems...
  24. Roy Hargrove is the trumpet player and of course Willie Jones III on drums. Correct !! 25. Just quickly, I'm too tired to browse now, but I got the Allan track: Jan Allan / Christina von Bülow Quartet Stockholm (SE), Allan's Home Studio at Lindingö December 1993 Jan Allan - trumpet Christina von Bülow - alto sax Jacob Fischer - guitar Jens Skov Olsen - bass Don't know what title it is, but I guess it could be "Marionett"? Or that crabby Saga? Fischer is a fine player, I've got him on a CD somewhere, as sideman.
