This might as good a place to post this question as a separate thread. I've been wondering if anybody here has read Leonard Brown - John Coltrane and Black America's Quest for Freedom: Spirituality and the Music Link -

Apple release OS X Mavericks as free download
erwbol replied to erwbol's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The real test for me will come when I try to play a 24bit/192kHz HD Tracks Blue Note download while doing some heavy multitasking. -

Apple release OS X Mavericks as free download
erwbol replied to erwbol's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
First impression is that it's very good for a .0 with only minor bugs experienced so far. Hopefully this will turn into another rock solid operating system like Snow Leopard. I do hate Launchpad (cannot remove (non App Store) apps) and the All My Files view in Finder, but both can be ignored. I had the opportunity to try Lion and Mountain Lion on my iMac and both were sluggish as .0 releases. -
Apple release OS X Mavericks as free download
erwbol replied to erwbol's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Last night, I created a USB install stick for a clean install. When I bought my machine I payed for 2GB extra RAM so I would end up with 4GB. Instead the doofus in the Apple store put in 8GB RAM total. Both the new OS X and the free RAM from Apple will surely increase the longevity of my iMac. -
Apple release OS X Mavericks as free download

Apple give away their new operating system, OS X Mavericks (10.9), for free! Any MAC that is supported by the new OS X can go to the App store and download it. Since I'm still on 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) this is more than a service pack update. Good thing I never bought Lion (10.7) or Mountain Lion (10.8). -
Audio samples are now enabled over at CD Japan for all albums with unreleased material.
-
No, not going too far.
-
Yes, isn't it amazing how the Japanese people voted in practically all the titles with newly discovered alternate takes without even knowing about them. Truly the land of the gods.

Remember not to sell discs you might want later

I sold off my rock collection to finance my growing jazz addiction in 2000 and have no regrets. Youtube suits me fine for nostalgia. I always end up reminded why I chose to focus on instrumental music exclusively. Jazz recordings I was initially cold to are a different matter. -
£20,014.50 for a new copy of John Scofield's Quiet.

New Dolphy, especially from the Out To Lunch date, is special enough for me. This gives me the opportunity to see how these SHMs sound. I can compare against the McMaster, BN Works, and HD Tracks download. Based on that I might get Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil as well. That, and my Blue Note collection is not nearly as complete as most people's here. I need to know if these are better than the McMasters for certain titles.

Super High Material. It makes no difference to the sound quality imo, but JVC and Universal claim otherwise. It's the remastering that makes the difference. (Sony has something similar with Blu-spec.)
-
There is a second alternate take of Blue Train on the SHM-CD not on the Ultimate Blue Train and RVG CDs. Similarly for the Blakey and Cannonball SHMs. They both have one extra track. The RVG of the Blakey had a short dialogue as track 1, so both the SHM and RVG contain eight tracks, but not the same amount of music. Edit: Anyway, I just ordered a copy of Out To Lunch from CD Japan. I was hoping for a new 24bit remaster, but this is even better.

There are alternates of Hat And Beard & Something Sweet, Something Tender. (http://www.cdjapan.c...?KEY=TYCJ-81013) I put this EMI Japan webpage through Google translate, and it seems there is a new alternate take of Autumn Leaves from the Cannonball Adderley date with Miles Davis, Somethin' Else. Also new alternate take of Blues March on Art Blakey's Moanin'. A list of the first fifty SHM-CDs in this series can be found in

Wayne Shorter Proper Box (VeeJay, some Blakey...)

I've never met a golden retriever who was into collecting albums, but perhaps yours is. Oh wait, you mean ... -

Being able to buy music anonymously on the internet is a great relieve to me. I have no use for the human element of a brick and mortar. Good riddance. -

For me torrenting has replaced previewing albums in record stores. -
Andrew Hill Bluenote Sessions mosaic box
erwbol replied to mesfen's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes, these individual releases cover all tracks of MD7-161. Smoke Stack sounds best on the Mosaic box imo. The Connoisseur is dreadful, the RVG bright but enjoyable. -
Ah yeah. Well I usually just look in the second hand section. Sometimes recent released albums are already there. Can you recommend a better record store in the west? Only the Jazz Center in The Hague, but they never had much second hand CDs if I recall. They certainly don't have the space compared to Concerto. It's a shame they are too far south for me.
-
For a while, I used to put the Monk in my discman whenever I took my bike out to do groceries. There's nothing like a little Monk to accompany a visit to the supermarket.
-
I always go by Concerto when I'm in Amsterdam, but I do resent them stocking more and more of those Spanish public domain releases. Titles like early Miles Davis Columbia, Prestige albums, etc. It's the death of album collecting imo.

Oh, I figured you must be familiar with that recording, but you said you hadn't listened to any of it. And i should have checked out the later pages of the thread you linked to. Apologies.
