Monk Blue Note Genius of Modern Music, CDs vs LPs
erwbol replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Discography
I just received the Milt Jackson Blue Note SHM-CD and it is clearly mentioned on the rear card that it contains "original remastering by RVG" - does it mean that the well known RVGs have been re-remastered on top for these SHM-CDs? Do the Genius Monk SHM-CDs bear the same credit to RVG? Thanks. Rudy Van Gelder mastered the 12" LP, hence "original remastering by Rudy Van Gelder." True, but this is not mentioned on other SHM-CDs as well, whose the original LP versions were also remastered by RVG. Yes it is, go check your version of Thelonious Monk Trio (UCCO-5227) from the Prestige 7000 series. It gives two remastering credits, one for the 12"LP compilation from the fifties and one 2013 DSD credit. Another example is Eminent J.J. Johnson Vol.1. I get it. Thanks! But, as another question in general, when it is not mentioned [e.g. Larry Young's Unity] does it mean that the original recording pressed on vinyl back then was not remastered by RVG (inlikely?), or the SHM-CD DSD remaster is not based on the original RVG remastering meaning that Cuscuna used the non-mastered mixed down tape and had it remastered anew for the SHM-CD? I think it is specifically mentioned for mono 12" LP compilations of material only partially recorded by Van Gelder. The SHM series adheres to the 12"LP track order and artwork. The Japanese are just being thorough. The Prestige series was mastered by Paul Blackmore, the BN SHMs are based on the Bernie Grundman transfers and tweaked by Japanese hands. Comparing the HD Tracks 24bit/192kHz Monk FLACs with the SHM gives enough ground for this conclusion. Other examples, Clifford Brown Memorial Album, Amazing Bud Powell Vol. 1, Miles Davis Vol. 1 & 2. -
Thomas Pynchon - Inherent Vice Finished the first of the four Fall Revolution novels by Ken MacLeod yesterday. Now quickly on to Pynchon's Inherent Vice so the movie's Blu-ray won't spoil the book for me.

Braxton Iridium box set - Yes or No?
erwbol replied to jeffcrom's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I don't know how late accelerator class GTM compares to earlier GTM (I own Iridium, Quartet (GTM) 2006, & London 2004), but have you sampled accelerator class performances yet? The 56 page booklet from the Iridium set is also really informative for listeners new to GTM. Just pick a couple of discs based on the set-to-set reviews (by the participating musicians among others) from the second half of the booklet and focus on those for the time being. I would recommend this box set to anybody interested in Braxton's music. Getting your hands on the most relevant recordings from Braxton's earlier output is expensive anyway, and you're already committed. -
This one here is interesting, but personally, I'd rather read about the good books. I could always use some guidance. Why not both together? Though, of course, opinions do differ, and some may definitely appreciate a book that is blasted by others. There are moments when I almost feel like "likes" and "dislikes" ought to be classified by assessments by mere readers/music listeners/fans/colectors on the one hand and by "scribes" on the other. Their approaches sometimes differ widely and this sometimes also has an impact on what one expects from how a given subject is treated. Not a matter of which one of those divergent approaches is universally better or more suitable, just different angles, I guess ... BTW, I distinctly sem to remember there is at least one lengthy thread about recomended jazz books around here. Not sure how long it has been dormant, though ... I tried to look for such threads with a Google search (site:organissimo.org/forum ... ) and nothing turned up.

German ECM discs sound fine. Only rare and OOP items are of interest imo.

Done at page x with x element of {1, 2, 3, ..., current page number -1} This bit of pedantry automated.

I'm happily enjoying the sound of this series and am glad to have left the somewhat compulsive comparing of McMaster & Connoisseur to SHM behind me. So, I won't be making any mini reviews here. That said, I would like to revise my opinion on the sound of the Speak No Evil SHM now that I'm on speakers. Earlier I had some misgivings about the emotional impact of Infant Eyes when compared to the BN Works and McMaster while listening on headphones (post #431). So, it seems there is now not a title in this series I'm not happy with. Only the Yoshida XRCD24s are better. And the handful of Hoffman BN APO SACDs I own will likely be sold off on eBay once a corresponding SHM is released. So, that's a second opinion revised there.

I believe the Vanguard box also contained some Monk covers, and they felt wrong to me. On the other hand, I think Anthony Braxton's Monk tribute album on Black Saint is brilliant. Paul Motian's Monk in Motian is also alright. Those are the only Monk tribute albums in my collection.

No, but your hearing might be. -
Must have been on acid throughout the decade. David should've been singing about Europa.
-
I used to own Citi Movement and the cheap Live at the Vanguard box. Of the albums you mentioned I only have the Hancock Quartet from the Columbia box. I've yet to listen to it.
-
I bought a couple of his albums when I started collecting jazz in the late nineties. I never truly connected with them. Like Milestones, I haven't bothered with the Marsalis family for years, Wynton especially.

Surely strap David Cameron to the concrete underneath the lift-off rocket's exhaust?

Ooh! Now that I'm on speakers again, Agharta and Pangea are high on my playlist, though I think they are more appropriate for a hot summer day or night.

Eastern Rebellion. One from ze list I was not willing to spend a fortune on second hand.

The first episode did end on a high, though, with Tuco Salamanca. There was no need to have as much adrenaline flowing as in Breaking Bad's first season opener. Solid episode. I'll watch episode two later this morning.

BBC: "Lance Armstrong is due in court after being accused of leaving the scene of an accident and crashing into two parked cars. Reports in the US media said his girlfriend Anna Hansen told police she was driving, before changing her story. He could face a fine and up to 90 days in jail if convicted of the charges of leaving the scene and driving too fast for the snowy conditions." The train wreck continues.

Harper Lee to publish second novel
erwbol replied to jazzbo's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Have to admit that I've never watched a complete episode. Do I have to leave the country, the world, the universe? You must be an orphan from the Delta Quadrant. -
Arrived earlier today. First impression very good. I will be listening a lot to Braxton's 80s/90s quartet while I read this. These also arrived today. American editions of Ken MacLeod's first four novels, the last two now OOP in the UK.
