  1. My personal wishes(these would save me losing some limbs to pay for the original vinyl): Steve Lacy "torments" Amancio D'Silva "hum dono" Barney Wilen "zodiac" Both Mike Taylor discs on lansdowne - these have been reissued on CD already but even these seem to have vanished The rest of the Alan Davie albums (only the duo with Tony Oxley has been reissued on CD)
  2. I got this set a month or so ago and I have "Black Magic Man" on Hat Art vinyl as well...I agree it does not sound that great...the original vinyl sounds a bit dull too. I've said it in another thread devoted to this reissue on this same website that this period of McPhee does not blow me away at all...his later group recordings in the late 70s/early 80s on Hat Art are more interesting to these ears...
  3. Karl Berger "With Silence" (enja, germany) Jackie McLean "Bluesnik" (blue note, NY labels, stereo) Jackie McLean "Destination Out" (blue note, NY labels, stereo) Steve Lacy "The Straight Horn of" (Barnaby Candid reissue, stereo...as much as I would prefer an original press of this I have to admit this late 70s issue sounds absolutely fine, and it only cost me $5...great album!)
  4. Well that's weird because I got my copy in the mail last week!?
  5. Sad news...he released some classic albums like "under milkwood", "free an one" and "from love with jazz"...lovely albums..
  6. Excellent album! Love that one...
  7. I would start with "Kirikuki" myself..if you like that you can explore further. They are all good though...none are radically different from the other so... There's a pre-Japo title called "Live at Montreaux" too but either of the Japo titles would do for a start...
  8. It's already out! Preordered mine last month and received it yesterday...it's a nice pressing and sounds great. Not a terrific session but certainly worth having/hearing...
  9. I love all the OM records on Japo! Fantastic stuff. The semi-recent OM cd on Intakt is good too especially if you prefer the more avant/free improv stuff. Just finished playing: Cosmic Eye "Dream Sequence" (roundtable, Australia)...a quality reissue! super quiet vinyl pressing..sounds superb. Currently: Stockhausen "From the Seven Days" 7LP box (DG, Germany) Just record 1...
  10. Tony Oxley "The Baptised Traveller" (Sony, Japan)...I bought the UK Sony CD of this when it came out but have always wanted it on vinyl since I love this album so much...really a classic UK free jazz title with a dream lineup of Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Jeff Clyne, and Kenny Wheeler. Anyway over the years I've had 2 supposed "NM" copies of the UK realm jazz issue on CBS that were both crackly/noisy so it's a big relief to find this Japanese issue which is dead quiet and sounds absolutely sublime. I used to have a few Howard Riley lps on Realm Jazz too that were noisy...I think the only Realm Jazz title I've kept in my collection is "Live At Ronnie Scotts" and even that isn't perfectly quiet. Not an audiophile label it seems unless I've just been unlucky!
  11. Andrea Centazzo "Ictus" (pdu, Italy) John Coltrane "Blue Train" (blue note, 47 w 63rd mono)...a bit crackly but serviceable early pressing of this classic Anthony Williams "Spring" (blue note, liberty)...a good sounding liberty pressing...I've always liked this record...a stellar lineup with Gary Peacock, Sam Rivers, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock..incredible! Kenny Wheeler "The Widow in the Window" (ECM, Germany)...last one....a classic...love this band
  12. I just played my copy of "celeste" and it's super quiet...just heard two isolated pops during the entire record. However I'm all too familiar with records that look NM but are noisy...have a few of those myself..very annoying! And it can be costly too...I've posted on this before but I don't want to think about the money I've wasted buying multiple copies of Noah Howard's "space dimension" until i finally realized the entire pressing run must be f%#ed!
  13. My copy of that is fairly crackly (hard to tell if it's the pressing or just life in somewhere gross - the vinyl is probably VG++). Good record that I would like to get a clean copy of. Mine's fairly crackly even after a good clean up whilst the vinyl looks good. Seller had graded NM and i got a hefty discount so can live with it Hmmm...now I'm curious about my copy which I have not played in maybe 10 years or more...I'll try to dig it out tonight and play it to check my pressing... This reminds me of another great Pilz album called "Jamabiko" with Itaru Oki...if memory serves correctly this title is a bit more straightforward then "Celeste" but really great nonetheless
  14. It was reissued in 1995 and if you check the discogs website there's a few for sale at around $50...
  15. Hello, I just recently bought a NM copy of "preach brother" by Don Wilkerson for $75. It's a mono copy with NY labels and "van gelder" stamp and ear mark in run out grooves. It's non-deep groove but here's the puzzler - it's got a tiny "biem" sticker affixed to both labels which I have never seen before. Any blue note scholars out there that can enlighten about this? Were these imported overseas?
  16. Feeling a bit under the weather so took the day off work and had the house to myself all day to spin records...a rarity these days with a wife and child The playlist for today: Don Rendell/Ian Carr "Phase III" (EMI lansdowne, UK) Amancio D'Silva "Integration" (EMI lansdowne, UK) Ken McIntyre "Year of the Iron Sheep" (united artists, US) - just side one Weather Report "I sing the body electric" (columbia, US) - just side one (studio side) Stooges "funhouse" (elektra, US) - just side one Oliver Nelson "Blues and the abstract truth" (Impulse, USA) - just side one And currently: Steve Lacy "prospectus" 2LP (Hat Art)...one of my favorite Lacy group recordings on this label along with "Morning Joy" and "We See"....really they are all great but I think the wonderful IRCAM production gives this a boost and George Lewis is incredible on here
  17. Masayuki Takayanagi has a few nice solo discs...there's also a very interesting Raymond Boni solo lp on the French Palm label
  18. Mal Waldron "Tokyo Bound" (Victor, Japan)...one of many gems released only in Japan during the early 70s...a fantastic trio date and a highlight in an immense and wonderful body of work. Excellent sound/production too...
  19. GAP "s/t" (Alm, Japan) Shankar "M.R.C.S." (ECM, Germany)..interesting session featuring one of my favorite drummers, Jon Christensen, with Indian musicians and next: Eric Dolphy "Live at the Five Spot vol.1" (Prestige, Japan)..looking forward to hearing how this compares with my 70s Prestige USA 3 LP box ("The Great Concert of Eric Dolphy") in terms of sound/pressing quality...
  20. Nathan Davis is great...my personal favorites are the LPs for SABA but I also like the 2 Segue lps and the Peace Treaty record too...I find "Jazz Concert..." to be his most "Coltrane" sounding album that I have.
  21. I bought that Disconforme reissue CD when it came out and remember not really getting into it; probably because it sounded so bad. I'll have to get this new reissue and give it another try...has anyone heard the Wah Wah LP reissue from last year or so??
  22. Used to be: Ornette Coleman Don cherry Miles Davis John Coltrane Albert ayler And while I still listen to those artists in the last 10 years my most listened artists are: Steve Lacy Mal Waldron Masahiko Togashi Edward Vesala Tomasz Stanko
  23. There's an old issue of coda magazine I have in which Albert Mangelsdorff is interviewed and he says something to the effect of "there's nothing wrong with a few beers to heighten the enjoyment of the music" to which I say amen! I mean how else could you understand free jazz
  24. Maybe...I'm pretty open minded and enjoy a pretty wide spectrum of modern jazz so perhaps one day his early stuff will 'click' with me; it's just right now there seems to be something missing from it....
