  1. VHS sucked. BetaMAX all the way!!!
  2. Pistons barely eek out a win against the Thunder. Boy, are they looking weak. MSU today! Woot!
  3. SOCKS! And a house full of family, gathering around a great meal (roast leg of lamb with apple/cranberry chutney (the new tradition!), goat-cheese gratin cauliflower, a pretty sweet green bean / mushroom dish from my mother-in-law, mashed potatoes, a carrot / raisin dish that my dad used to make and my step-mother brought this year, brussels sprouts with bacon, and all the sweets you can eat!) Zora and Stella made out like bandits due to all their aunts and uncles, which is good since we didn't have a lot of money to buy them much this year. Zora was up at 3:30am playing with the gifts that Santa brought, though. Finally got her back in bed around 6am. I didn't get a whole lot of sleep last night, but the lamb came out perfect today, and this old house likes entertaining family. I miss my dad. Merry Christmas to everyone!
  4. Is it too early to talk about whether we'll be a cover band or do originals? 'Cos I've thought about starting to begin to learn to write originals.
  5. You just thought you weren't talking about music... RIP. I was just talking in another thread about the importance/end of the neighborhood aspect of jazz, and here this comes. Jim, you were blessed to have had the experience. Indeed. He was a real gentleman. Another memory is after one of our lessons, we were talking outside as he was going to his car and the subject turned to my parents. I told him of my mom's passing, which had happened only a few months before. He became very reflective and offered some great words of comfort to me. I only saw him once in the last 10 years after those lessons. He remembered me and we had another good talk. RIP
  6. RIP Kenny. He was a gentlemen. I took a few lessons with him at MSU. He was very accepting of the fact that I didn't want to play piano, but organ (unlike the rest of the jazz program there at the time). I'll never forget; one day he gave me a chart with nothing but II-V-I's on it in different keys and said "Learn this and you'll be fine." Most of the time we just talked about life, not really about music. He was a sweetheart.
  7. I adopted a stray who I named Herman. He's still happy and fat (very fat) but I've noticed he's having a hard time getting up and down the basement steps to his litterbox. I have no idea how old he was when he appeared, but that was 8 years ago.
  8. The older tube models are more desirable in general than the solid state models (which I think is what the model 700 is). Models such as the 21H, 22R, 122, 122RV, 47, 147, 147RV, and 31H have a tube amplifier in them. The dual-speed models are worth more than single-speed as well.
  9. Jim, I got exactly the same thing on my computer... What did you do to fix it, other than re-installing the OS? I tried the explorer patch, with not much success, the automatic updates stay off, no matter what, so it seems to me that I will have to go back to the little chinese shop were I got the computer from and ask them to wipe the disk clean and re-install everything... Stefan If you can get to free.grisoft.com, download and install the latest free version of AVG and let it scan your computer. It's the only thing I found that will fix it. If you can't get to the site (which is a distinct possibility since this bug limits where you can go), download and install AVG on another computer, put the harddrive from the infected computer into that computer and scan it from there.
  10. Oops... I spoke too soon. David Weiss says in the Freddie Hubbard ICU thread that he's still recovering. I got an email in my inbox this morning that he had passed.
  11. Jimmy McGriff.
  12. Freddie Hubbard.
  13. If you switch browsers, make sure your computer is set to "automatic updates". The Windows update website does not function under any other browser and even if you're using another browser you can still get browser hi-jacks that affect IE and thus your computer. I had a fun one come through myspace the other day. It turned off automatic updates and wouldn't let me turn it back on, deleted my previous system restore settings, and wedged itself into both IE and Firefox. It would cause pop-ups for porn, system cleaning software, warez sites, etc. Really annoying and it took me a couple of hours to get rid of it.
  14. Roger, That tune is called Como En Vietnam and was written by Steve Swallow. I think it appears on a Gary Burton / Keith Jarrett record from the early 70s. Cool tune! I'd like it to end up on a CD as well. Good to see you and thanks for coming out and supporting the band!
  15. Breakfast is indeed a great meal if done right. My staple is eggs (over medium), toast (wheat) and butter, and some sort of sausage. Either links or patties. Had that this "morning", which was really 2pm because I didn't get to bed until 6am. I love omelets, but I have not mastered the art of making them. Gotta work on that.
  16. Are you serious? Who are "they"? This has been going on for a long time, in all genres of music (yes, even classical!!!!)
  17. I'm sure it happens in the jazz world, but it definitely happens in the pop/rock/rap world (ie, "tithing" part of an album's sales to the producer and/or engineer). It's the whole "point" system.
  18. Hey... don't get me wrong... she's a true beauty. But I don't trust any photos in magazines.
  19. Do celebrities automatically have a portion of their income "tithed" to Adobe, the makers of Photoshop? Because if not, they should.
  20. Only if you write tunes with various isotopes in the titles.
  21. http://www.energy.gov/news/6794.htm This is such good news, not only for the NSCL (I worked there for almost 6 years and my elder sister currently works there as a mechanical engineer), but for Michigan State, the city of Lansing (and East Lansing) and the state of Michigan itself. This is huge! Looks like they might need my skillz as a "coil winder" again!
  22. It's quaking in fear.
  23. ... but This Is The Place is finally available on eMusic. At this rate, Groovadelphia should be up there in 2011. http://www.emusic.com/album/organissimo-Th...d/11350556.html
