Sports: 2006 NBA Play-Off Pool
Jim Alfredson replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I hate to say it, but I think the Pistons would've lost to the Mavs if they had made it past Miami. The Mavs are frickin' DEEP. Joe D better beef up the bench big-time this summer because the Pistons don't have to worry about only the Heat. The Cavs are hungry. -

Tony is a world-class jazz organist. Fantastic player. I wish I could go, but here it is 8pm and I still have to run my drains in this new kitchen. -
You never know who's reading these things.

No, but I doubt I'll be able to go, although I'd like to see Tony. Let me ask my wife. Are you going, Joe? -

WD40. Not kidding.

If there is a way to quickly arppegiate block chords on the guitar, then sure. Most of the sound of the technique when it comes to organ, however, is in the drawbar registration.
-
The two techniques are pretty indistinguishable. In fact, I started "squabbling" Friday night with Root Doctor at Andy's and Chris Foreman was sitting in on piano. After the show he said, "Hey, did you do that because you wanted to or because I was here." And I said, "I think you know the answer to that!" He got a good chuckle out of that one!

People who steal things suck...

So I just remembered that I took my Sony digital camera to Chicago this weekend and had not taken it out of the car yet. That explains why the thief (or thieves) dropped everything else. It's an old model, probably not too many around. I'll call the pawn shops tomorrow and see if anyone brought one in. It's got a bunch of pictures of my kitchen remodel (in various stages), some nice pictures of the band from various gigs, pictures of Zora from months ago. Not priceless stuff by any means, but it would hurt to lose those. -
Not exactly. It's this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymUtcoeWsOM And here's Chris Foreman doing it: and also here: Some people (ahem... like me...) kinda cheat and do it by making the "horns of the devil" with one's hand (ie, pinky and thumb extended, all other fingers closed towards the palm) and play octaves with the thumb and pinky while allowing the rest of the fingers to hit what they may. The sound is almost the same. The way Jimmy and Chris Foreman do it is hard.

I might have to raise the limit, now that we have more RAM. I put a limit of 60 connections on the database because we were timing out so badly. I might be able to raise that back up to 100.
-
I still might upgrade to MySQL 4.1 because it's supposed to be much quicker. But I have no idea how to do it myself, which means I need to pay tech support to do it, which could be expensive. But hey, after getting charged $250 to add another 512mb of RAM, it might be a bargain.

It's just a drag because this neighborhood is really starting to get better, but just a few days ago I saw that someone spray-painted the big, brick markers that stand as a gateway to the park (and thus have been there for 110+ years) and it just makes me think, "Why?" Kinda like when someone tagged the elementary school across the street a few months ago. It takes a big man to tag an elementary school. It's just fucking lame. -
So, the memory went in last night sometime. Has it been running good?

Update: I went outside again and noticed some of my papers strewn about the alley (mainly directions to various gigs) and about 100 yards down the alley I found a bunch of my stuff discarded, including the radio face (thankfully!) and some soaking wet CDs. I'm assuming somebody was coming down the alley and the theif or theives got spooked, dropped the shit, and ran. Probably a bunch of kids. I am going to do a stake-out one of these nights and scare the living fuck out of them. -
Due to loading my organ in and out of the van repeatedly, the side door on my Plymouth does not lock automatically. I almost always lock it manually when I get out of the car, but last night I must've forgot. This morning I go out to the car to put some leftover tile in the back and my side door is open (it's been raining all night) and a bunch of my stuff is gone, including my daughter's diaper bag, my radio face (not the radio), and various CDs. They even took all the change in my cup holders. Talk about desperate. Theives are low-lifes. I feel like waiting up some night this week and see if they come back, because this has happened to my wife's car several times (come out in the morning and the glove compartment is rifled through... luckily she keeps nothing of value in her car). Fuckers.

Time to Boycott Baseball
Jim Alfredson replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Really? So how much public taxpayer's money goes into those stadiums anyway? Regardless of how much money may be put into a stadium, it doesn't make a baseball team a "quasi-public resource". Its a private business, run by its owners in the way they see fit. Doesn't matter a whit that they con a state or local government authority into building them a stadium. If my hard earned tax dollars went into building a $160,000,000+ stadium, I might disagree. But then again, who cares? -

That would be a No. Are you married to her? -
RIP Billy. If you can, look for his solo gospel record on Pickwick (I think) where he plays organ, piano, and drums. It's amazing.

Using the search function is very processor intensive. I think the RAM will help dramatically. When I still had the board closed, I was able to search like the old days, including clicking on member names and getting their profiles, total posts, etc., all in a relatively short time. Upgrading from MySQL 3.23.58 to 4.1 is also supposed to dramatically speed up search times, which is why I will still probably have it done even after the RAM upgrade.
-
Welcome back... I upgraded the database and have an order in for more RAM for my server. The slow-down problems are probably still going to persist until the RAM is installed (not sure whent that will be). If the RAM doesn't solve the problem, I'm going to have to upgrade to MySQL 4.1. Right now, things are zippity quick!

The database has grown to a size that is causing problems with my server. It takes a lot of computing power to search through a 500+ mb database file with 60+ people connecting to it at one time. Part of the solution is getting the "full text searching" option integrated (which I plan to do soon... it's unfortunately a manual process that will take about 4-6 hours to do) and the other is to get the server upgraded. I'll keep ya'll posted.
