  1. That Cavs/Pistons game was pretty funny. Everything was "Lebron this, Lebron that" going in and the Pistons just took that game over. The Cavs will be lucky to win 1 game against Detroit. EDIT: I just read that Ben Wallace won the Defensive Player of the Year Award again this year. That makes him a four time winner. It should've been five straight. The year that Artest won (2004) was crap. GO PISTONS! :bwallace2: :bwallace2:
  2. It appears that the mystery box contains two relays, for switching the motor speeds. That's a good way to do it, rather than just running straight AC and switching that (I've seend it done that way!) I would guess that whoever had this Leslie before you used it for guitar. Some sort of preamp before the input to boost the gain is probably your best bet. Maybe something with a bit of EQ. I don't think you would need compression, but that's up to you. Good luck!
  3. That's a great record... I'll have to listen to it again once I get home. Dan Wall is extremely under-appreciated.
  4. So do I, but the internet is our tool against that. Yeah, we might not be able to go down to our favorite brick and mortar record store and buy the latest Joey D disc, but we can order it online and have it in our hands within a few days, meanwhile listening to samples, reading about the disc, reviews, etc. Walmart doesn't get our money in either scenario.
  5. Times change. You can sit around and wish it weren't so, or you can adapt and survive.
  6. Back to the musician at hand, all the points made are valid ones and worth considering, but who says this guy isn't just doing this type of music because he loves it and that's what he wants to do? And what's wrong with that? Again, if his intention is not to change the world but to be a "stylist" (like many, many jazz guys), then why not? Not many people are playing this kind of stuff. Plus, the guy is English, which may explain some of it... ;D But seriously, is a classical pianist who excels at and specializes in Chopin jive because he plays 100+ year old Sonatas and Etudes?
  7. IIRC, KT88 are basically European tubes, in the same family as (and thus interchangeable with) 6550s but I think they bias differently than 6550s. Some people like them in Leslie amps, some don't. I personally feel that 6550s sound and perform better in a 122.
  8. I guess it comes down to intention. Is this guy's intention to be relevant, or is it just to make some music that sounds like the music he (and lots of other people) like? If it's the latter, than he's succeeding and bully for him. If it's the former, well... I agree with Sangry.
  9. I'm not sure. It could be something to replace the motor switching. The only way to find out is to look underneath and trace the wiring and see what it's connected to. If it's connected to the outlets, then it's for the motors. Also, I was right... there are KT88s... in the bottom picture!!! The top picture has 6550s. I knew I wasn't going crazy!
  10. Thanks. Looks pretty cool. I loved the first movie as a kid.
  11. So do you need the latest version of Quicktime to see this? And can you download that version without downloading stupid iTunes!?
  12. I take it LeDonne will be playing piano? I might come back to D-town for this. Root Doctor is playing on the 2nd and organissimo on the 3rd, so that's a lot of back and forth. We'll have to wait until Monday to see who's playing on the 4th.
  13. Only one 12AU7 is used for the preamp (the one to the far right, if you're looking at the front of the amp). The other (on the far left) is used for switching the motor speeds. So the one that is still there is the correct one for the preamp. They might have put in some sort of solid state relay to switch the motors or they are just switching AC on and off (which works, but isn't exactly the best way to do it). Those power tubes look like KT88s (EDIT: No, they look like 6550s. Nevermind!). I've heard some people like them, but I've never cared for them. I would try replacing them with a pair of good 6550 power tubes. I like the Electro-Harmonix. One thing I've noticed with clonewheels is they rarely have enough output to adequately drive a Leslie amp. The signal of a Hammond is at a different impendence than a standard synth output. This usually means the synth (or clonewheel) won't have quite enough juice at the output to fully drive the Leslie and the volume will suffer. You might want to look into getting one of those preamps from Speakeasy Vintage. I've heard great things about them, but they are kind of expensive. As far as distortion, it looks like you have the original V21 Jensen horn driver in there. These blow very easily. If you're hearing mid-range distortion, there's a good chance the horn is blown. The best replacement I've found is the one BT Productions sells. It's alnico, like the original Jensens, but it can handle 100watts instead of 40watts. I have one in my 21H and one in my 122 and I love them. They sound great. You'll have to get an adapter plate, which BT also sells, to mount the driver in the cabinet. You could try putting a 12AT7 as the preamp tube as well. They have more gain than a 12AU7 but not quite as much as a 12AX7 (which usually just distorts like crazy... which can be cool in certain situations). Hope this helps.
  14. This is a public forum. If people read something here and want to respond to it, that is their right. I have one magazine in the UK that instead of defending itself here against what it considered "malicious attacks", just refused to review our latest disc. I'd rather the person come on and enter the discussion. "lawrence olds" may or may not have been involved in WBEZ. I don't think it really matters. He/she has every right to speak his/her mind on the issue.
  15. Thanks for the spam. Bye.
  16. Condensors are very quick and sometimes that can get in the way on certain sources. With horns, it can be hit or miss. I've found that big dynamic microphones often sound amazing on sax, or even better, big ribbons like the AEAs. I think our engineer used an AEA on our last record for the horn player, but for our first record with Ron Blake, he used a combination of an original AKG C12 and a Neuman U47 (big tube condensors) and that sounded great as well. It depends on the player. Just my 2 cents.
  17. I dance with my wife on the rare occasions that I'm not on stage. Usually the occassional wedding or maybe if the club is playing some good music during the breaks.
  18. I saw this one first, so I deleted the other one. Was your's first? If so, sorry! Just trying to cut down on unnecessary, duplicate threads.
  19. Hey SoulStream, does it feel like the first time?
  20. Well, I hope it is understood that the essence of the story is in no way intending to say one is better than the other. I love both Martino and Albert King's music. The great part of the story is Martino was probably 15-16 years old at the time, and the notion that Albert King would actually be pissed! Yes, it was all in good fun Noj. And as much as I use to love Albert (sure, and still do)....I'm more of a Martino man myself these days. Also, the idea the Albert would be pissed...from what I understand that was kind of a state of mind for the man. I think it's just funny that McDuff was ribbing him so.
  21. A lot of times the avatar actually changes, but your computer is holding dear to it's cache and thus loads the old one. Hitting "refresh" in the browser or right-clicking on the picture and choosing "view image" tends to work.
  22. I only provide hookers these days. Only ugly ones, too.
  23. I just bid on the Opus de Funk (which I only have on vinyl!) so all you other suckas stay back!!!
