  1. The latter after reading the recent 'essential' Art Blakey thread, the first after seeing Dan's avatar Actually 10 years ago I was in a record store buying my first ever Jimmy Smith disc. I had two albums in my hand; Home Cookin' and Back At The Chicken Shack which I went for. Both covers are ace though.
  2. 'Scuse my ignorance here but was Henry Grimes' absence during these years akin to Peter Green's sabatical?
  3. Yes. I thought that film started very promising but by the time it got to the circus/carnival/freak show bit I just wanted to cringe, despite it's metaphorical meanings etc. The hot air balloon sequence was like someone doing a piss poor Roald Dahl pastiche. Shame because I really wanted to like it and have yet to see past that point.
  4. have grand day Maren.
  5. That was from the monks point of view
  6. About 3 miles from my house lies an old Carthusian monastery. On a cold, damp Autumn day this is what it looks like:
  7. Sorry to ressurect this thread but as I type my wife is watching Sin City in the living room. I had to let it pass about 10 minutes ago. Granted, it's all very clever, production wise, but as a non-comic-book-geek I find it a bit self indulgent. And that's coming from a jazz fan
  8. Excellent!
  9. One of the first records I bought, jazz that is, due to Dolphy's presence. I remember hearing the first tune and thinking "this is so familiar and so perfect", like Mike said, small group writing and arranging at it's best but also epitomising to an extent what 'modern' jazz should actually sound like. It's going on in a minute when Bill's finished at the Vanguard
  10. RIDE TO LIVE LIVE TO RIDE ← ← I thought that was something to doze off on
  11. Yes but I'll be putting my Campag groupset onto it with Mavic Ksyrium SSC wheels.
  12. Me too! But I do love cleaning them. This is my umpteenth frame in the last 15 years; they tend to break around the rear stays or in the case of my present Bianchi, bottom bracket. So I thought Ti is the way to go. As for sleet, I have another bike for that. You out today Bebop? ← And very nice scenery too
  13. From Caiman, arrived today.
  14. well..next Friday it is.
  15. What the man said And a healthy dose of Stan at his best; The Roost Sessions with Al Haig especially or Jazz Samba Encore!
  16. Have a very good day Chris.
  17. I've been photographing hot chicks all day in the cold, abseiling of a high, glass art gallery. But I didn't notice the temperature...
  18. Arrived from eBay this morning.
  19. Ever worry about your wife cheating? For crying out loud
  20. From eBay for a deep sea diver.
  21. half a century........wow...that's old dude..... have a very good year John! Congratulations.
  22. Thanks fellas. I have quite frequent lay offs from the sax; maybe every year or so playing an hour or more each day then a year of zilch. Each time I pick it back up, the head remembers, the fingers sort of remember, the theory bit comes back in a matter of days but the stamina around my mouth.....that always takes time. I have the breath support --- possibly down to riding my bike every day --- but it's applying it! Actually I was thinking back and , apart from 2 weeks in January, the last time I played in earnest was July 19th. 2004 , with a local guitarist. We both love the bossa nova stuff and played for a good two hours of Jobim material. Quite well in fact. I'll try and get that sort of form back. Plus a bit more.
  23. I spoke too soon
  24. having had these two on heavy rotation for a good month or so now, I've finally gotten my sax down from on top of the wardrobe. And played it, for the first time in ...phew....7 or 8 months. 20 minutes today, tomorrow? Who knows.
