John Zorn's TZADIK Label

re: Saft's "Astaroth" Angels Volume 1. while I don't buy much in the way of "new" music these days I just received this disc and after a couple of spins I must say it is one of the most beautifully done albums that I have heard recently. not overtly Zorn in feeling, while a couple of the power cuts could easily be a vehicle for 'Electric Masada', and while similar to some of the Anthony Colemans the flow is just top notch with swingers interweaving the modals and folk forms. Greg Cohen makes you antsy for that new Ornette and Ben Perowsky who I have not heard much at all is as subtle and powerful as Baron. -
Overdubbing, how prevalent is it in jazz?
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
didn't 50's Tristano play over enhanced overdubs of some bass stuff for it's lack of speed? edit : for wasn't that "Tukish Mambo" as well as "Line Up" from 'The New Tristano '56'? - but I also see that some say he "used NO overdubbing". -
Selling RVG-Connoisseur-20bit K2-Box Sets
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Mr Mingus's topic in Offering and Looking For...
all this intellectual property stuff here is pretty petty and preposterous as far as mr. mingus is concerned. geez the guy was trying to sell some stuff probably to get some dough to buy some more stuff and keep the music biznitz as far as jazz goes alive a bit. and now i guess we should all go and hand render own avatars rather than simply grab a logo that some sod painfully tweaked away at. here, i'll start. -

Stumbled upon Bernstein's 'Diaspora Hollywood' on iTunes. Sounds intriguing esp w/ The X's Bonebrake on vibes here? Anyone have an opinion?? (seems like lots of new Zorn catalog stuffs there so at least one can now sample the wares.) -
man i'd love to know the solution to this as it is truly the missing feature in iTunes. i've had the same issues with burning out mixes of stuff from various sources - ie: mp3s, mpeg4, aac etc and aiffs when tossed all together in a salad of varied source files. sometimes you bump the cuts up against another source and the levels of the burnt product are quite varied that it is almost worth winging the disc out the window. the "Sound Check" however and unfortunately does nothing to the file. i don't think it can! it only checks the sound to an averaged level when playing out of the Mac or onto an iPod. it does not impart that sound to the file that is copied to a cdr. the only way i think it can be done is burning a playlist to cdr and then converting it all to a wav file on the way back in via importing again and then through some other software you can level all from there. i don't think Mac will ever allow such a feature within their OS cause it's all about selling widgets now rather than a fully featured product. ie: "gee this sound from the nano is much more enjoyable in it's compressed to hell state that i think that valentine's day cd mix you laboriously made from all them RVG, TOCJ, JVCK2, SACD and MFSL cuts sux big time!" edit to say this is only layman rationalization... i just wish there were a big knob w/ a nice old VU meter on the machine!

don't know this score ... altho i have always liked Wm Stout's poster art for the movie. Charles Earland is, I believe, on the soundtrack to Bakshi's Crumb rip "Fritz the Cat". May be that you are looking for some 70's Prestige sides? Boys!?

WWPSD... what would phil spector do (other than shoot the messenger)? -
"Couldn't It Be You" on Blakey's 'Theory of Art' was, I think, credited to Art rather than Jackie's "Fidel" from 'Jackie's Bag' right?

I enjoy Waits much. Dug out these couple articles about what he digs: HERE and HERE. funny about the balloon in that his main man Ribot plays the guitar with them. oonf!

Leena was great when I saw her with Parker a few years back. Beautiful and powerful voice that was unfortunately teamed with Amira Baraka rants. That solo outing is old school soul I think. I did an iTunes search and came up with a cut with some clubby euro rapper too. Sure wish she would do a breakout jazz rekkid cause she's got the lungs and everything else as I recall..

re: Book Of Angels series. Well I tried my best to have a bit of a boycott of all things Masada-esque for a while as it was all starting to feel the same in so many different ways, but, I just sampled a bit of Jamie Saft Trio's 'Astaroth' Volume-1 in the new series from iTunes and it was stunning. Less Anthony Coleman and more smart CecilMengelNicholsberg from the snips I heard. Anyone have the whole deal to comment upon. I really wish Zorn would chuff out a project of some straight up jazz without the noodles and chicken soup. -
Marcus, these are at Dusty Groove now as I saw more than a few on the opening page. "Brazilian Octopus" caught my eye for title and cover shot. that Walter Wanderly also sounded good.

led from DMG's newsletter: Rhino and iTunes only have put up a rarities mix that did not make the time cuts on the DualDisc format. 18 cuts in all with a solo acoustic of Byrne doing Nancy's "Boots..." that's worthy of a visit from some of Frank's boys.

too bad Aric's not here ... I think my keyboard still has a coffee stain from his reply to the essence of a similar line. :rsmile: I had that St Germaine and really liked it, for about a month.
