I got a new computer with Windows 7 last year, and am very pleased with the OS. It is a huge improvement on Windows XP. Windows XP was in its turn a huge improvement on previous Windows versions when it came out, but compared to Windows 7 it definitely shows its age.
As antivirus software you can download the free Microsoft Security Essentials. It has been doing well in tests, is unobtrusive and light on the resources.
This Hawkins album may have been recorded in 1953. Lord says this:
"Classics liner states session originally recorded for Parrot and lists date of recording as c. August 1953; date listed here from the Coleman Hawkins discography, by Jean-Francois Villetard but this may be the Savoy remastering date."
The term "R&B" had not been coined yet and it is of course a gradual shift from swing and blues and not always easy to draw the lines between the different genres, but some who recorded in 1945 what in retrospect is considered to be early R&B are:
Louis Jordan
T-Bone Walker
Joe Liggins
Roy Milton
Wynonie Harris
Bull Moose Jackson
Jack McVea
He is really off when it comes to giving the years for when things happened. Groovin' High recorded in 1942(!), joining Dizzy in Earl Hines's big band in 1941 (they would have been on the records before the record ban, if so).
I think there should be a poll sub-forum where we can vote on whether there should be a pinned thread about whether we should have an album cover sub-forum or instead a pinned thread.
Jazz Beat is one of the "Andorran"/Spanish labels and they do not have a deal with Universal. It will be a needle drop if it hasn't been available on CD before, but as far as needle drops go, theirs are usually quite good.
A couple of additional notes:
Step Out And Get It was included on a 1996 CD compilation called Mod Jazz which was drawn from the Fantasy vaults. Here is the AMG review, where one also can hear a sound sample.
If Ever I Would Leave You was recently made available on a blog that should be well-known to those who frequent such places. Using that, one can now at least burn a complete copy of the original Silk & Soul album.
Apart from the shorter single take of Redwood City, this means that Moody McDuff from the Steppin' Out album is what now remains to be made available in digital format.
