Anyone pick this up? Any comments on sound quality, the Newport live bonus cd and the DVD? I think it came out in 2009?

Hope you had a good one Kevin! -
Although I don't know you, I have found your recent posts very troubling and like others here, I am hoping that things turn around for you. All the best.

I've gotta think that Hamilton & Cruz make a huge difference in how a pitcher approaches that batting order. With both of them out, a pitcher can afford to get tricky with the hitters & if the hitters win sometimes, it's not nearly as potentially lethal as it is with those guys in. Hamilton has crazymad skills, such an effortless swing, and Cruz, although not as fullbore "on" yet as Hamilton has been, has been getting hotter lately, and unless and until he's clinically declared finished, brings much the same potential to the plate. So with both of them in, the other guys are probably getting pitched just a teence more narrowly, and with hitters this good, a teence is all it takes. Other than Ian Kinsler, though, the whole lineup can't be approached too casually. Andrus, Young, Beltre, Moreland, & Chavez all can and have established themselves as clutch performers. And I gotta think that Kinsler gets it together at some point. I sure hope so. Both catchers can hurt you if you're not careful, Napoli having had a few streaks of total scorchitude. Yeah, Hamilton makes a difference. Cruz makes a difference. That we never went below .500 while they were both out was heartening. That the team has more or less taken up where they left off when Hamilton got hurt is very heartening. But as a Texas Ranger fan, I'm used to some pretty badass offense. Let's talk about the starting pitching to this point. This is definitely not something I'm used to, and I'm not ready to believe that it will sustain itself. At what point does Ogando hit a wall in terms of workload in his first year starting? How deep does the Inner Colby Lewis really go? How many more mental hurdles does Derek Holland have to clear? What malady will strike Matt Harrison next? But good god, so far.... And today, with Hamilton getting the day off, Dammit Darren Oliver did his job, and most importantly, Neftali Feliz came in and held a 2-0 lead w/no difficulty. He looked like we expect him to look, and he was relaxed and grinning after he wrapped it up. First time this season I've seen that. Talk about heartening... MLB Network was in and out of that game until the end...pretty wild and chippy, ejections galore! We Tribe fans are in a state of shock, but I must take my hat off to you and your Rangers.

New: Robert Johnson -The Complete Original Masters
skeith replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Miscellaneous Music
I picked this up yesterday at J&R for $13.99 and I think it is better than an other cd releases of this material I have heard. I did a direct comparison the the CD issue of King of the Delta Blues Singers on Crossroads Blues - and one thing you quickly learn (and may account for why some find such a difference) as someone else pointed out in this thread is that King of Delta Blues Singers uses an alternate take. But the real story is that when you compare the same takes, I noticed that KODBS image is much larger, but that image is sort of ghostly compared to a smaller, tighter, and higher fidelity image of the music that the new set has. I recommend it. -
This is probably heresy, but my favorite Abbey is one that came very late in her career and features Stan Getz - You Gotta Pay the Band.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
skeith replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Complete Columbia, Okeh, and Vocalion Lester Young with Count Basie (1936-40) I had a lot this material before, but not sounding this great and man I can't sit down when this stuff is on. -

You were given one on Monday, this should have been a sweep and we'd be talking about the first-place Red Sox. What happened Monday? I thought the most controversial call was Ellsbury safe at first.

New: Robert Johnson -The Complete Original Masters
skeith replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Miscellaneous Music
On what, exactly? The sound on the new release is stunning. The music is..... well, some of the greatest country blues songs ever put on record! Ok, I could have been more precise. I am very familiar with the music. I think that the sound on the previous box circa 1990 sucked, but the sound on the mid 2000 single releases were very good. So, has the speed of the recordings been altered, as far as folks can tell? -

I wouldn't say that the Japanese suffers from the reverb, because I find the original issue to be too dry, but in comparsion with the Rhino digipak from 1998 (cat.no 8122-75352-2) it sounds distant and indistinct, albeit easier on the ear. The Japanese version I'm talking about is "Inner Space", cat.no WPCR-13194. It sounds much like the 70s Atlantic LP twofer. The main reason for getting the "Inner Space" CD would be the unissued tracks from the session which are not on the Rhino release. Thanks Daniel A, I have the Rhino digipak from 1998. So you are saying that the japanese Inner Space is not much superior soundwise to the 98 Rhino digipak? Wow... I find the Rhino digipak sound to be very disappointing... harsh and too bright at turns.
