T.E. Lawrence (aka "Lawrence of Arabia") "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" -
thanks all RT, which Collectables version are you talking about that sounds good, the one that has most of Mountain in the Clouds on it or the Inner Space one?
-
My copy is a digipak european import, part of the "Atlantic Original Sound" series, as it says on the cover. I love the music, but the sound is thin, shrill and hard to listen to. Was this a poorly recorded session, or do good sounding versions exist? Inquiring minds want to know!!

What live music are you going to see tonight?
skeith replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Probably Nighttown is the best for national acts, but don't discount the local guys - have you seen Ernie Krivda? I have seen great local jazz at the Barking Spider and the Bop Stop...I assume those places are still around? In the summertime, Cain Park has both national acts and local jazz musicians in outdoor concerts ... usually quite good. -
I do like the Big Sleep with Bogart and Bacall. Since Lon said new, I did not mention it. A side issue - isn't the plot of the Big Sleep both in the original book and film, famously muddled? Didn't Chandler himself admit it did not quite add up? Or am I thinking of another title and by the way, I adore Chandler.

Lon, You didn't like Robert Altman's movie of "The Long Goodbye" with Elliot Gould? It would seem to fit your bill.

Chuck, Did you get a response from them yet? -
Thanks Lon and others for your responses.

Stan Getz Quintets: The Clef & Norgran Studio Albums
skeith replied to crisp's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Chuck, You are right! I apologize to all for my confusion. I had taken the discs out of the box and had assumed the alternate take was appearing after the original take - in this case the original take is on the disc 3 whereas the alternate preceeds it on disc 2. I had not played my disc 3 for a while. Sorry for the confusion, and my other two comments still stand. -
Stan Getz Quintets: The Clef & Norgran Studio Albums
skeith replied to crisp's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's what I suspected. But remember the title of this disc indicates the recordings are all "studio" and why do the liner notes say this is a studio recording made the day after the Shrine concert... ??? Poor editing?? Still waiting for my set to arrive... #1 is a minor issue, but #2 and #3 sound rather annoying to me! Too bad if it's so (not doubting your findings!) - quality control costs too much in these cheapo times of ours, I assume... I didn't buy this set yet but according to the tracklisting on Amazon "I don't mean a thing" is on disc 2 track 9 and on disc 3 track 1. Also according to to Amazon (fwiw) the playingtime of Flamingo on the Quintet set is 7:25 and on At the Shrine 8:34. If it's the studio version with applause it's annoying if it's the Shrine version it's als annoying. You still need the Poll Winners edition of 'At The Shrine', wich has both versions, of Flamingo to be complete. MY set only has one version of "It Don't Mean A THing" and it is an alternate, do other owners of this box have two versions? -
Thanks everyone. I am looking to sell and there's the rub with CL. Most people suggest meeting away from home, but I want to sell speakers and would guess any buyer would want to hear them right?

Stan Getz Quintets: The Clef & Norgran Studio Albums
skeith replied to crisp's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I love this set, but there are some minor issues: 1) a song is described as "I Don't know What Time It Was" - sounds suspiciously like a song I know called "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" 2) We are treated to "It Don't Mean A Thing (alternate version)" - what happened to the issued or original version? It's not on this set. 3) We are told that the version of "Flamingo" was recorded in the studio the day after the shrine concert, yet the track is introduced by Duke and has applause throughout - of course applause can be added to studio tracks, but this sounds like the At the Shrine concert to me. -
I see such equipment on both of these sites in my community. Anyone had any experience with either? any suggestions? Thanks
-
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I managed to get an "official" copy at a reasonable price. I think the Penguin Guide, which I generally like, is a bit harsh in its review of this disc, yes there is an obvious tendency to go with the times here, maybe the material is not stellar, and maybe it is not strictly jazz, but I still like it.

How can you tell if tubes are beyond their best-sounding life? When do you guys change them and I am not talking about attempting to get better sound, rather I have some equipment and haven't changed the tubes in years... do you wait till one goes?

Are there any earbuds that are softer? I like to watch TV in bed with earbuds and sometimes I lie on my side putting pressure on one or the other ear. After a while this becomes uncomfortable with the hardness of the earbuds. Any good solutions for this?

Lon, I have listened carefully for a week, and while they are close, I have a slight preference for the new OJC remaster.
-
For the record, the cdr would not play on my cd player, yes on the computer.
-
But is it currently available in a format other than cdr?
-
Thanks JAW - I know what CDR is. My question is : is this cd available other than as a cdr?
-
I picked this up at a used cd store this week and did not look too closely. When I got home I noticed it said "digital audio - cdr format" in small print on the tray card. Is that the only way this cd is available? I looked at the BLue Note website and couldn't find anything on this cd or anything about cdrs.
-
I looked at the Cds and it doesn't say in the booklet or tray notes who did the remastering.

FS:The Alternative Lester: Original 1936-39 Recordings
skeith replied to skeith's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Well just to make it clear, as the name implies these are alternate takes of Lester Young performances, from various labels. There is "Lester Leaps In", "Dickie's Dream" and "Shoe Shine Boy", on this one of course but when I picked it up what it seemed to have the most were unique alternates from the Commodore sides: "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans", "Countless Blues", "Pagin' the Devil", "I Want a Little Girl" and it didn't seems these alternates were easy to come by . Sound is quite good and would probably appeal most to someone who has only the master takes. -
Price reduced to $12.50 delivered to a US address.
