  1. I am interested but have another commitment that night. thanks for thinking of me.
  2. Realism is not subjective, that's the reason because every tape for broadcasting has, or should have, standard color bars at its start, because you can measure the color, and tune up the broadcasting. To put it simple let's we say we have a scale from 0 to 1, black should be 0, white 1, if black is 0.2 it appears like dark grey, if is less then 0 we have a kind of unatural grey that seems a damaged LCD monitor. Definition depends of the number of pixels, or lines, if you prefer. In order to appreciate an HD monitor you need, like you said, an HD source. AFIK there are no channels that broadcast in HD, a part some experimental one. We would need a new HD software and HD players. As usual we are seeing the common 'war of formats', Sony HD is different from Panasonic HD, they are based on different algoritms of compression, (you have to compress every frame of a movie shooted on film), they are, at moment, incompatible. HD is probably going to cancel movie shooting on film. But, in order to show a movie in a theater you have to transfer your HD movie on film, because theaters haven't got HD projector. As you can see the thing are a bit mess at the moment. Frankly would you bet 4K on this? This discussion is very interesting but reminds me of this interchange: Sonia: Immorality is subjective Boris: Yes, but subjectivity is objective Sonia: Not in any rational scheme of perception Boris: Perception is irrational and implies imminence ... and by the way, how good is that 26 inch Sharp LCD? The Sharps are not so bad because they are manufactered outside US. Skeith! Long times! How are you? I'm good Porcy and you?

  4. Thanks Ed what is interesting to me is that with my current set up without the cable box, I am able to record a program while watching a different one.
  5. I currently have cable but do not use the cable box- I just hooked the wire up to my DVD recorder and then hooked that to the TV. I may have to get a cable box and am being told that by using the cable box I will be unable to record a program while watching another. Is this true (and if so, why can I do it wihtout the box) or is it a way to get me to buy their TIVO?
  6. belated Happy Birthday!!!
  7. Happy birthay Chris
  8. I just picked it up and am listening. Nothing earth-shattering, but solid. anyone else get it?
  9. Not sure if this one's a standard, but it is on the new Sonny Stitt box and just drives me nuts. It's called "If the Moon turns green" and is apparently by Paul Whiteman - (there may be another song that Billie did by the same name but that is different.) This tune is wierdly off-kilter and doesn't seem to resolve comfortably - it's unconventional perhaps in structure and harmony, and it doesn't work for me.
  10. I don't have the exact quote but I am pretty sure she says this on camera in the Ken Burns Jazz series. and as for what the "conspiracy" was against - she did not use this word - but that is what she meant. As I think back on it, she was probably referring to black music in general as opposed to just jazz.
  11. you talkin' about that interview she gave that appeared on the Ken Burns Jazz series? Yeah what was she smoking before she said that? Guess I missed that. What did she say? I Abbey Lincoln, by the way. I was lucky enough to get to interview her for over an hour a number of years ago. Unfortunately, it was over the phone. the basic gist of what she said is that the Beatles were promoted as part of a racist white conspiracy to eclipse the popularity of black jazz

  13. Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. Could be Lon. I would like to get the answer. I have looked at the liner notes to the metal spine box and it says merely "SBM", whereas the cover of the long box says 24 bit. I want to know if they are in fact different remasterings.
  15. The metal spine box says sound is SBM, the long box says 24 bit. Can anyone confirm if there are indeed differences and which sounds better? Anyone compared them to Japanese DSD 9000 series?
  16. Just got this yesterday and aside from the rather goofy introduction about Swinging London in the 60s (I would have put this in the extras, but I guess the young people need context) and some poor camera work, it's a decent concert film. I have to say from the start I have been a long time big fan of Blind Faith. On the DVD,the sound and pictures are fine (you can even see that some of these superstars don't clean their fingernails), maybe a bit too much filming of the crowd. The band is fine with Little Stevie Winwood in fine voice and on Fender Rhodes piano and Hammond B3, Clapton playing a Tele with a Strat neck, Rich Grech on bass that has no bridge - just a piece of foam he shoved in there and Ginger - well being Ginger and that's great. Mick and Donovan in the audience. They do a good job on the Blind Faith tunes and there is an interesting version of Under My Thumb which I loved the way Winwood changed the melody and perhaps harmony, but it lacked a bit of energy- maybe needed more practice or maybe seeing Mick in the audience was intimidating. Overall, a must for Blind Faith fans like me. Sigh...........Gone are the days!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. I saw the Paul Motian Trio at the Village Vanguard on September 15. Great show!!
  18. Wish I could have joined you guys... I think I will go next weekend. Let me know if you go again.
  19. I prefer the RVG to to OJC K2 on this release.
  20. Ernie Krivda, tenor saxophonist, Cleveland, OH
  21. I saw on the Village Vanguard website that I was wrong. Friday and Saturday night shows are $5.00 more expensive ($35.000) than Thursdays or other weekdays ($30.00). That price includes a $10.00 drink minimum. However the website does indicate that some "special" shows may be priced higher and my impression from the Times, but it is confusing, is that the PMT is $35 plus $10 for all shows.
  22. which night are you thinking of going 7/4?
  23. No one has mentioned his Newport Jazz Festival book - that is just a great book!!!
  24. to my knowledge there is no difference in price between Thursday or Friday night at the Village Vanguard. The Times notice seems to support that too.
