  1. FWIW.... I didn't care for the way you were initially treated and a lot of these boards can be rough at first to newcomers. I think a warmer welcome and an invitation to join the conversations and debates would have been more appropriate. Speaking for myself I hope you stick around and participate and express your musical likes and dislikes.
  2. Nice article/review of the various Afro Sambas albums here: Danella Thompson
  3. TTK - That IS a terrific clip. Thanks for posting it.
  4. :tup Yeah! It's a great album. I waited and waited for it's cd issue an hopped on it when it came out - I guess 10 or 11 years ago. Way back in the day a close friend of mine had it on lp (I mean in the 60s when it first came out) and we used to listen to it frequently. I didn't buy it for that reason and then, about five years later it was impossible to find. I was happy for the cd issue.
  5. It's a really good set. Solid Mainstream swing. In the days of vinyl some of these were issued by Riverside in two volumes called Giants of Small Band Swing. That name sums it up. This is also an instance of this issue being the best sounding issue - way better than the lps that appeared on various labels in 50s and 60s.
  6. Harold, please be more specific: What's the name of this album??? Thanks. Nice Work is the latest incarnation I'm aware of. As Chuck alluded to earlier - the Vanguard issues divide the sessions up in maddening ways, but in this case it has all the tracks by this band other than one - which appears on another reissue in this series - I believe a Ruby Braff.
  7. I just grabbed a new copy on Amazon. $29.00. I hate to pay that much but from the samples this really sounds like a different approach. I think I'm going to like it.
  8. Don't miss the Vanguards with Vic Dickenson. Killer!
  9. Yes! Lon - You already know I love these records and really it was you who introduced me to Paula via Berimbaum. I love that album, all of the above mentioned Paula and the newest album Telecoteco. Berimbaum really caught my attention and I started to delve into Brazilian music with the help of Loronix and also a close friend who hipped me to Baden Powell and Vinicius, etc. Of course I was aware of Jobim but not to the extent I am now. I didn't realize the full scope of his genius. I'm not sure what it is that some of you guys don't like about those last two Paula albums - it might make for some interesting conversation for those who don't like those to state their case. Friendly discussion on fine points of music and listening, etc. The samples sure sound good. I have to hunt this down.
  10. They were just incredible! I missed seeing them live by a week in NYC. I found out about it too late. For awhile there were 15 or 20 videos of the group in Tokyo on you tube - then they disappeared. I was hoping that meant that a DVD was going to materialize but that never came to pass. I would gladly have sprung for that stuff on DVD!
  11. Bev, have you got these? If not, do not delay nor hesitate! The "Live In Tokyo" disc may be a bit more difficult to get at a reasonable price, I suspect. I paid $41.00 for "Live in Tokyo>" Not sure, but that may be the most I've ever paid for a single disc. It was well worth it.
  12. Really nice. I'd add that I feel the same way about all of Paula's recordings.
  13. I got this a few weeks back. Pretty good !!
  14. My first reaction upon seeing this thread was "Geez. I thought Billy was already dead. Guess I'm mistaken." Didn't think to look at the dates.
  15. He was one of the greats. RIP Billy.
  16. For the most part I'll score from Amazon in preference to itunes. Better bit rate and lower prices generally. Usally anything available on itunes can be found on amazon mp3s. having said that - i don't know if that will help the process time. When I buy from either store the time to process is really qick. Usually under a minute.
  17. I uninstalled AVG and was able to reinstall Itunes. My library was intact when I opened it. I'll either wait a couple of days to reinstall AVG or go to another product.
  18. Yes. To no avail. Further research indicates that I can uninstall AVG and then reinstall Itunes. Or set up an extension path in avg for itunes. Seems easier to uninstall. I was scanning my external drive with AVG and getting the same false positves when I found the above link. I stopped the scan. Next step is to disable the warnings one way or the other.
  19. AVG SPARKS ITUNES FALSE ALARM I got this alert yesterday and got the result mentioned here. My itunes is gone and I can't reinstall. Where do I go from here?
  20. Yeah...good stuff! Speedy and Jimmy are blowin' and doing what the gig calls for. I bet none of Tennessee Ernie's viewers are thinking this is jazz or too far out - so they're communicating and playing. I dig it. BTW - I dug Tennessee Ernie's show back then when I was a kid. He was on weekday afternoons every weekday around 3:30. This is New York TV I'm talking about. I was a young kid and didn't know it was country and wouldn't have cared - I dug it just as music. And maybe that's the attitude I still have. I wish I could remember Arthur Godfrey's studio band - that was around the same time period but a NYC show. On every weekday morning and I saw it often, but it's SOOOO long ago. Maybe a You tube clip will surface with the band in sight. I'd love to see if Lou McGarity, Cliff Leeman, Ernie Caceres etc presented as communicative a front.
  21. Charlie sure was staying hip - when he comes in around 2:57 he sounds a hell of a lot like Diz. Nice side - Now I have to hunt down that Chrono.l
  22. ....OHHHH! Don't pass by what was released by RCA as "Town hall concert". Still available on the RCA Louis cd set. POPS with Hackett and Teagarden. Great music. Hackett particularly great on "Ain't Misbehavin'."
  23. Don't miss "Somebody Loves Me" on Decca by an Eddie Condon group including Bobby and Tea. Another gem under Condon's name is "Embraceable You" on Commodore. Another Commodore gem (but without Teagarden) is "New Orleans" with not only a great Hackett solo but a great Ernie Caceres solo. You can probably get all of those relatively inexpensively from Amazon on Chronogical Classics. They are all laden with great Hackett. Later great recording include "Coast Concert" and "Jazz Ultimate". Both on Capitol.
