  2. Borges giving a lecture may be one of the best ways to encounter Borges. Absolutely terrific.
  3. cd universe has it up for pre-order. I'm in. About 15 years ago I came home late one night and they were showing it on tv. I was able to get about the last 45 minutes on vhs.
  4. ah-leu-cha's A section is the same as the A on Honeysuckle Rose.
  5. I came across the other day. I agree with you.
  6. I agree with all of what you say here Chris - It's just that the first Sony cd reissue was so horrendous (and I didn't have the original lp issues) - as were the first Sony reissues of the Louis Hot 5s and 7s. All that stuff was unlistenable. I was actually angry after buying them. I have all of the Bessie Double lps. They sounded fine. I gave away the old "Bessie Smith Story" 4 lp set after getting the doubles, preferring the sound of the doubles. Now I wish I had kept them simply for collector value.
  7. True - but for us old farts that grew up when 78s were still around, 45s and lps were just emerging, and nobody in the family had a clue as to taking care of records - I think we have built in noise filters. Schaap's version doesn't bother me - and is way better than the previous sony cd reissue. Probably I would like the AVID if I already didn't have the Columbia.
  8. Having seen Stuff live back in the day more times than I can count I can only say that the records don't come close to the groove and intensity that was happening when they were gigging nightly at Mikell's in the 1970s.
  9. Amazon has mp3 downloads of Mezz Classics 1936-37 and also 1947-51 at $6.99 each. Not a bad deal although there are no liner notes. In this case you'll be able to get the discographical info easily elswwhere.
  10. I think Jeffcrom hit it. The POH sessions had a big emphasis on blues. They were swing era players who could play convincing blues. Like wise with BN Jazzmen. As Jeff says...a little more dixieland (which doesn't bother me in the least) but also a few blues tracks that are on a par with the POH tracks. Sidney DeParis acquits himself admirably and Edmund hall and Vic Dickenson are wonderful. Things of this ilk also can be found in the Commodore and HRS stable.
  11. Casares is absolutely terrific. If you dig Borges you'll dig Casares.
  12. Adolfo Bioy Casares: SELECTED STORIES Casares is terrific. I'm looking for all the translations I can find but I've got an eye on some of the the Spanish editions. I need to learn more Spanish and Casares or Borges are the guys to keep me drawn in.

    Fats Waller

    Great reading! Thanks Durium!
  14. Just starting to get into the disc. One listen all the way through so far. No idea who track one is (I think it's two banjo's or a banjo and guitar) but I think it's interesting that this pre 1910 recording contains one strain that we later hear as "I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say" from Jelly Roll. The trumpet on track three DID standout - and I thought Louis and rejected the thought because I thought I knew all Louis' records. I thought maybe Jabbo. So it's Louis! Gotta get some Perry Bradford.
  15. Anybody remember Belle Barth: Have Crack-Will Shack- Until the schmuck with the gun gets back.
  16. My condolences. No matter how old the loss is real and immediate. I'm glad you know you have a community of friends here you can relate to.
  17. Drummer Kenny Bolds once told me a story of a New Years Eve gig where at midnight he played Auld Land Syne and left the stand. A Patron in the venue shook hands with him and wished him a Happy New Year. While he was still shaking hands with him the patron dropped dead of a heart attack. Happy New Year!.
  18. Bioy Casares - The Invention of Morel. Short and terrific!
  19. Welcome back Randy. I always enjoyed your posts - and wondered if you were a Paterson NJ guy.
  20. Check out some of the James Booker clips on You Tube.
  21. I'd like to be in for a download please.
  22. Just until he needs glasses.
  23. Happy Birthday Jim. You are one of the best I've met on the net!
