  1. I think he's hitting various languages. Not sure what he's saying. "Gurnish Gurnish" I took as yiddish. Not sure what it means. What you're hearing as "Stop seeing the wolf" I'm hearing as (forgive and forget my spellling) is Italian. Catesta HELP! I think is "Stata zita something" The Stata Zita part is "shut up". AGAIN -my spelling is off the wall and phonetic.
  2. I heard this when it first came out and liked it but didn't buy 'cause I had the originals and was short on bread at the time. From time to time it would pop into my mind and I would regret not buying at the time. I NEVER saw it after it's initial release. BTW - Billy Jackson was a talented cat! A GOOD producer.
  3. Happy Birthday !!
  4. En route to join Chuck Mangione. Terrible news.
  5. COOL! I'm in as soon as it comes out. I was in a used bookstore and bought a three-in-one called LA NOIR. It's Ellroy's first three novels. Relatively obscure. The hero is a cop - "Sgt. LLoyd Hopkins." Good stuff and definitely the harbinger of thigns to come.
  6.
  7. I must have missed this thread when it first came out, but just for the record, I love Aretha's Columbia recordings. I bought many of the lps as they came out - so Aretha was no stranger to me when she went to Atlantic. I think the Columbias got a bad rap that was undeserved and at this point I listen to the Columbia's more often than I listen to the Atlantics- although that may be due to serious od'ing on the Atlantics. Don't know of any Aretha on Battle. I know Mavis Staples was on Battle way back. "Uncloudy Day" - which is a total gas!
  8. Agreed. Teagarden's singing is as soulful as his playing. I wish I could have met/got to know him. For that matter, I also think of Frank Rosolino's scatting as an accurate representation of his style (articulation, vocabulary, energy) on the horn. Absolutely.
  9. Listen to Chuck and Lon. Re Tea's singing: It's as warm and personable as it gets.
  10. Anybody growing tired of these treasures is out of their mind. Is that Art Rollini to the right of Johnny Hodges?
  11. I love the Murder Inc. soundtrack. Completely anachronistic. Totally of the time the movie was made but not of the time the movie portrayed. Abe Reles: "I got used to it." Burton Turkus: "The canary could sing but couldn't fly."
  12. The Bud Freeman Capitols were included int he Mosaic Capitol set.
  13. Didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
  14. Not positive, but I think no relation.
  15. Sad news Chris. I saw Leonard play many times when he was the house bassist at Condon's. Great player.
  16. My son gave me this for Xmas in a paperback 3 volume boxed edition. I'm away from home right now and took the first volume (books 1-30) with me. I'm just getting into it but quite like it so far. Very well translated it seems to me. (ie the English is not in the least stilted-- can't tell that it's a translation-- though I of course can't say how close it is to the original.) Bolanos translator is quite amazing (IMHO). I've heard lots of good things about Bolano. I'll be getting this.
  17. Yeah! The right thing at the right time. Nice bass drum kick and the snare sound is terrific. I haven't heard this in a long time. It's good to hear it. When it came out I mentally compared it to Larry Williams and dismissed it. Foolishly. As happens frequently now things I dismissed then sound really fine to me now. The Beatles do a great job of making it into a guitar based thing. On Larry Williams' record the signature lick is on the guitar but an octave higher, double notes and not as prominent. On the Beatle's McCartney hits it when the guitars can't. On Larry Williams' record the bass never plays that lick. I guess it's Earl Palmer on drums. Ringo doesn't suffer in the comparison for all the reasons noted above.
  18. Great! Pops is always wonderful to listen to and although I had heard the studio version and I had never heard the live version before. Ricky Riccardi's notes are good and he points out that the sax section (first up) gets through it's part OK. "Not an A+". Interesting to note that on the live version - tempo way up! - they are a lot more together. Definitely a testimony to the benefits of a working band that gets to play the tune often as opposed to that first encounter in the studio. Of course Pops is great and so is Big Sid. Nice to hear him take an extended solo. I can't really think of many others on record. There is an Eddie Condon Commodore where Big Sid takes a chorus. It's the date with Max Kaminsky and Benny Morton. Thanks for posting this Larry. I wasn't really familiar with Riccardi's blog. I could (and will) spend a lot of time there.

    Mono cartridge

A few months ago I bought a new Marantz receiver. Although there is no mono switch I noticed from the first mono record I played a noticeable improvement over the 10 year old Pioneer the Marantz replaced...and the improvement was in precisely the areas that a mono switch or a mono cartridge would effect. Is it a possibility that the newer quality receivers and amps "sense" a mono record and adjust playback accordingly?
  20. Sad sad news. RIP Fathead.
  21. No question it's a degradation in sound quality. I guess people are going for the convenience PLUS many can't tell the difference. It is depressing.
  22. I have that one on a real drug store issue on Coronet records. I think I paid 99 cents for it in the late 60s or maybe early 70s. New.
  23. John Thomas, Rozelle Claxton and Lawrence Dixon 1961* (Steve Schapiro) From the Franz Jackson date iirc. Nice record!
  24. I'm in. I missed the prequel but I can't wait for this.
  25. I have the shuffle and the old 30 gig "classic". I use both A LOT. For everyday listening on the run the Shuffle is incredibly convenient. For more relaxed times and for traveling the 30 gig fits the bill, but it will soon be replaced by the 120. I have 27 gigs in Itunes and as soon as I exceed 30 I will get the 120 model. I have TONS of music I haven't yet loaded so it's just a matter of taking the time to put things on Itunes.
