How many of you here have gotten use to MP3s?
Harold_Z replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My feelings also, but I would add I find them ok in the car and actually those "Jukebox" cdrs with 6 or 7 albums on them are great for long trips. -

I have google news on my home computer and Yahoo on my office PC. Both give a good choice on content but I think Yahoo has the edge.

Vern Albright, Mr. Honeywell and MY LITTLE MAHJEE ! RIP Gale. In truth I thought she was already gone but seeing this brought back a STORM of memories.

I'm not familiar with those anthologies but I bet the tracks are from his album "Embalo". It's a Bossa classic, a Jazz classic. Do a search over at Dusty Groove for Tenorio Jr and a bunch of stuff with him will come up. Also do a search at Loronix and you'll get a lot of info.

I've heard the same thing.

What a great talent! RIP. I was thinking the same thing about "expose" books.

I also think bad transfers. It happened with vinyl also. One example" In the mid 80s I bought a new copy of the the "Swing Street" 3 lp set on Epic. I thought the set had long been unavailable and had not been reissued. I thought I had a real find. Apparently I was wrong. The vinyl was not very typical of mid 80s Columbia vinyl - clean but very thin. Not the vinyl of the 50s and 60s. Also no booklet - just the discography info on the inside front box cover. Obviously not the original issue. The sound was pretty miserable. WAY to trebly and although vinyl, VERY digitally scrubbed.

What a great set! I've had this material since the early 80s. First on a Tax lp then on various cd issues. I Can't remember where, but I've heard Pee Wee's tenor solo on "I Would Do Anything For You" referred to as the first Rock and Roll Tenor solo. I've often contemplated the possibility that this body of work was the prototype for the Fats Waller and His Rhythm sessions that were to follow.

Man ! - I would love to hear that! I've bought this stuff over and over, on vinyl and on cd, the most recent (and best) issue being the Archeophones. I've got all the later material also, again on vinyl and cd. I need to delve into it more.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ! ! ! -
Good session. I first encountered it on a Columbia lp entitled SIDNEY BECHET CL-836. I think the original 78s were on Vocalian.

Jazz Street - Dennis Stock

I bought it back then too. Talk about old farts .....I fart dust. I like those shots too. Also I like the shot of Mousie Alexander in Condon's (I saw him there) , the shot of Bill Crow on times square in the early morning, etc. -
Yeah...just great. Guitarists reading this..do you think he used flats? Sounds like flats to me.
-
Yeah! It's very hip. I love a lot of the old tv themes...especially the so called "crime jazz" genre of themes like Perry Mason. Impact, M Squad, etc.
-
I've only really heard him with Eddie Harris. I've liked what I've heard, but I'm not aware of any other recordings by Pickens.

Great comedic minds thinking alike? Absolutely !

Thanks Dan for another VERY enjoyable disc. Those first five: Five piano tracks all featuring pianists speaking the same vocabulary. Gene or not Gene? It's really hard to tell but I'll give it my best shot. 1. Not Gene. Nice blues, but I think Gene would be up an octave right from the jump. 2. "Cute." I think it's Gene and I recall he did an album with a big band some years ago. 3. "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic" Not Gene. Richard Tee (it's not him either) used to play something very similar to the intro on this morre than 30 years ago as the intro for "Oh Happy Day." Either this guy dug Richard a whole lot or there is a common source that I'm unaware of. I don't think Gene would borrow to the extent I hear on this. 4. "You Don't Know Me" Very nice. I think it's Gene. 5. "I'm Walkin'" Yes indeed! I think it's Gene. 6. "Medication" Is this the Houston Person/ Ron Carter thing? Sounds like Ron to me. 7. "Sidewinder" Is it Larry Goldings on organ. Trumpet is nice. I dug the drums. 8. I had no track 8 for some reason. 9." Autumn Leaves" Don't know who. As usual I feel that I should. 10. No clue. 11. "On the Trail". I think that's the name of that. Don't know who, but it's nice. Sonny Rollins did this tune way back on on "Way Out West" iirc. 12. Nice blues. no clue. Now I'm going to read the thread.

I don't blame you. Well...the worst didn't happen. If I were you I'd kick back with a nice scotch on the rocks and relax..

I have a few cds by Papa Bue with Wild Bill Davison and I think one with Wingy Manone. Always enjoyed the band. Happy Birthday Papa Bue.

These tracks are on the Johnny Guarnieri 1944-1946 Chonogical Classics under the name "Johnny Guarnieri's All Star Orchestra".

Here goes. Hats off to Dan for a very enjoyable disc. 1- Didn't know the chick but googled and I think I got it. Very enjoyable. 2. Sounds like Dr. John to me. I guess early and something I'm not familiar with. 3. Dug it -very nice. Don't think it's Charles Brown but it's kinda in his bag. 4. Sticks and Stones. Groovin' version. The Checkmates? 5. BB King Sings Duke from the Crown vinyl. MAN !! I wish I had that entire lp. Over the years I've heard bits and pieces here and there. No reissue on this? 6. Johnny Adams with the Turbanator. Love it. 7. Freddie Roach's "Next Time You See Me." Joe Henderson on board. Had this since the first lp issue. Great. 8. Junior Parker with the original of the above. Word was that Wayne Bennett was the guitarist. Love it. 9. "Watermelon Man". Don't know who. The guitarist sounds VERY familiar. 10. "Shake". the tuba makes me think maybe the Dirty Dozen but ...nah. not them and also the piano nixes that. 11. Dig but no clue. 12. thru 15. No clue.

I don't know how many I'm going to ID correctly but I sure am enjoying the discs! Good stuff Dan!
