  2. What Lon said.
  3. RIP Ray. Sad news.
  4. Exactly. ...and the Budd Schulberg novel was based on the real life career of Primo Carnera. The second photo is Primo and boxer Max Baer. Baer proceeded to knock Carnera down ten times...winning the fight.
  5. Same here.
  6. I'm in total agreement about the great quality of the Decca set - and it IS a must have. But you should be made aware (if you aren't) that there are TWO distinct periods of Basie. Old Testament and New Testament - the New commencing after a short period in the late 40s when Basie dismantled the big band and led an octet for a year or two, followed by the reforming of the big band. The Old Testament band used a lot of head arrangements, while the New Testament band emphasized arrangements by people like Neal Hefti and Ernire Wilkins, etc. Generally speaking - Old Testament is on Decca and Columbia, while New Testament is Verve and Roulette. So...I'm going with the Decca set for the Old Testament and recomending "April In Paris" on Verve for the New Testament.
  7. A bit off topic, but it seems we've got a bunch of R&B freaks here... The Coasters did "Let's Go Get Stoned" prior to R.C. 's record. I don't know what label...I have no info at all and there is nothing on AMG ...Does any one have this or know anything about this or if it ever reappeared on any kind of reissue ? I distinctly remember hearing this ONCE on the radio on either WNJR AM or WWRL AM before Ray's record was out. C'mon..you can just hear the Coaster's doing it ! Right ?? I'm positive.
  8. Man...I'm glad to have a bunch of Alvin 45's and and a cdr from a friend (Kevin Kiley) that is also from 45's for the one's I didn't have. I think that's the best sound I'm going to get, although I wuld buy any reissue that comes down the pike. In the past few years I've become a big fan of those old beat to shit 7" 45s.

  10. I knew you'd dig that !
  11. Well..I watched the tape of Sly. My take: The wierdness (if you want to categorize it as such) was intentional. In a nutshell - I think Sly knew exactly what he was doing (maybe he's not as fried as we think?). I think it was a minimal effort to be sure, made for some reason we can only speculate about, but after reading this thread I was expecting a lobotomized zombie...and that's not what I saw. He knew exactly what he was doing. He did it and split. The accompaniement was noisy, self serving bullshit (I'm sure he knew that). His physical appearance ? i.e. the mohawk, etc. That's what Sly thinks today's show biz wants. That's all that is. Disappointing in the sense of what an appearance of Sly could have been was not realized.
  12. Same in Passaic. My gig got cancelled and I'm glad. I wasn't looking forward to the ride home.
  13. Just to toss in another good opinion on the Bud Freeman date. I have a clean copy of the lp and also the europeon cd Lon mentions. but I don't have the additional 4 tunes. I'll be getting this for sure. I'd like to see the Dot and Grand Award stuff Chuck mentions get reissued also. It's good stuff and should be in print.
  14. Danelectro was something else ! I still have a Danelectro guitar that I bought in the mid 60s new for $35. It's totally utilitarian. The body is made from formica ! I mean you can turn it over, eat on it and wipe it clean with a wet rag ! I think the neck is made from aluminum. In any event there is no truss rod adjustment and the guitar has needed no adjustment since I bought it. It has the famous "lipstick cover" pickup. Danelectro made a 4 string bass which was pretty much the same thing. I wish I had bought one back then. I'm sure it was in the same price range. They also made the first 6 string bass guitar that I know of. It had a sound somewhere between a regular Fender Bass and a guitar and it was used extensively in the studios to double the bass part on primarily cornball rock dates. You'd recognize the sound if you heard it. They made amplifiers too. The guitarist in the first band I was ever in had one. Danelectro was originally manufactured by a guy named Dan Armstrong who sometime in the early 70s manufactured guitars under the Dan Armstrong name. I remember one was made of clear fibreglass. BTW - the Vincent Bell mentioned in the Coral Sitar blurb was a very busy NYC studio guitarist in 50s and 60s.
  15. The show started at 8; the Sly tribute began just before 10; Sly appeared just after 10, so about 2 hours. Thanks, Stereojack. ContemporaryladySF: "u might have 2 run your VTR at 1/4 speed to see him-----" In other words....I shouldn't blink.
  16. A friend recorded the Grammy's on VHS. Anyone know how far into the show is Sly's appearance ?
  17. I found a used copy on EBAY about 2 years ago.
  18. IF Adriana's alive, it's curtains for Silvio. I seriously doubt that Adriana is alive. What was Silvio shooting at ? The ground ? If he just wamted the sound of shots he would have shot in the air.
  19. I'm looking forward to it. 12 episodes followed by a final 6. I've heard that major characters will meet their demise. If they DO go totally down that road my bet is that the story line paralels The Godfather. Tony is left alive but alone (maybe in prison). No friends - no wife (would he kill Carmella? I hope that scenario doesn't materialize) and estranged children. My more cynical (realistic?) side says that David Chase will leave enough people standing for an eventual....what ? Movie or spinoff ?
  20. Are there any online videos of last night ?

  22. Hey...I think it's a great idea. Anything that gets the good stuff available again is fine with me.
  23. Spring in the air... There's music everywhere...
  24. When I heard they re-clicked for authenticity.....that closed the deal.
